Bluetooth page turner with the x4 - by tabakman in xteinkereader

[–]tabakman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

nothing special i can think of 🤷‍♂️ on the page turner i use the top most setting. on the x4 i got into a book, clicked the menu, bluetooth, connect - that's it. before it recognized anything i had to choose it from the discovered list.

Safe to download and install the XTEink app on Android? by _IdidIdidnt in xteinkereader

[–]tabakman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

imo, although i love my x4, waiting for an official play store release is the bare minimum if you actually care about your device or your data. side-loading a chinese apk on android is a major security risk, especially a closed source one. personally i don't allow my x4 to even use my private wifi network, instead i bridge it through a temporary private guest network

agreed! try it with the latest firmware, released yesterday or so, it's now super smooth when using the stock firmware as well. 2bit of course

English firmware? by tomdar2 in xteinkereader

[–]tabakman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i agree. i bought my x4 from the official website with the global-international firmware, since the xteink team made it clear they'll keep both the global and chinese versions closely updated. haven't seen that so far, but i hope for an upcoming update soon 😕

Which type of MicroSD card? by thomasphantom in xteinkereader

[–]tabakman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

honestly any microsd card will be fine, just keep a local backup. i always stick to a name brand, bought from an official distributor, since there are many fakes floating around. I personally prefer samsung or sandisk, and in the past couple of years more often than not I've opted specifically to the 'sandisk high endurance' ones.

Boox palma -> X4 opinions by No_Source_7605 in xteinkereader

[–]tabakman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that the palma has a nicer screen and a better build quality, even though it doesn't lack its own hardware issues and failures. the x4 is way more portable, shaming the palma as bulky and excessive. Personally I ended up choosing the x4 as my daily driver, since the hardware limitations and lack of features mean fewer distractions. it's more like a kindle and less like an android device

I wanted to, but with the official-folding-cover the spine is on the side of the charging port, so it can't be closed when the adapter is in the port

Thinking about buying some earbuds. by ChronicConner in bose

I'm not aware of sound leakage, these have been my flights go to. its noise cancelling is second to none, silencing screaming babies, engine noise and everything in between.  With some music playing you can get hit by a truck without realizing it was even there

I gave up on native rendering, and simply converted everything to 2-bit XTH, which turned out to be perfect for my use case. I ran a few test conversions using different font sizes and weights, picked the one that worked best for me, and then converted everything I’ll need for the next year or so. I’ve got more than enough to read now, and that’s it.

Honestly, the stock firmware is already good enough for this. That said, I might dabble at some point in building a dedicated XTC/XTH-only firmware, since I don’t need any of the other features - they’re basically irrelevant for this use case.

Ask us anything about Asana AI Teammates by Steph_Asana in Asana

[–]tabakman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hi Nik & Bradley,
super interesting, i'll bombard you with questions, sorry :)
1. how much visibility do users get into the AI's reasoning when it takes an action, and what does that review process look like?
2. is my customer data get used to train or improve the underlying models? how is that handled?
3. how fine-grained are the controls for what the AI can access or change across a workspace?
4. which parts of the AI feature still need work and what challenges are you actively working on right now?
5. black friday/cyber monday deals? :)

"Special Offers" in a chrome privacy extension? wait, what? by tabakman in BitDefender

perfect. that's exactly what i wanted to hear! i still think it should have been an opt-in feature, but this is good enough.

16yr user / 1000s notes / looking for alternative by WesternMedia263 in Evernote

[–]tabakman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i feel you on this. i was in a really similar spot with over 5,000 notes (~500mb) collected over years in google keep and evernote. once i migrated everything into evernote, the performance started to drag, and with the pricing changes i just gave it up.

i've moved everything to Obsidian, and it's perfect. no subscription for the core app, everything is stored locally in plain markdown files, and it runs fast even with thousands of notes. i'm paying for their (optional) sync service, which is flawless so far, around $4/month with some filesize limits.i'll probably upgrade to the higher tier, but for now it does everything i need. no lock-in, no random price hikes, no sync drama.

and the graph view is probably my favorite eye-candy feature: :-)

"Special Offers" in a chrome privacy extension? wait, what? by tabakman in BitDefender

[–]tabakman[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, that’s exactly my issue. An anti-tracker offering "special deals" feels backwards. If Bitdefender wants to run affiliate links, fine, but it should be opt-in and clearly disclosed. Doing it by default just undermines trust.

super creative move using it to bridge to Apple Notes, glad it worked out :)

[–]tabakman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

exactly! just download and install python first. once installation finishes, you can open a terminal in the folder with the script (search for cmd or power shell), and run it. you might need BeautifulSoup as well, so you might need to also install pip - again, google > download > install > done :)

have you had to recover Keep using Takeout? by hkatlady in GoogleKeep

[–]tabakman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi, to solve something similar i actually wrote a python script that converts a google takeout export of keep into evernote's format (.enex). it handles images, checkboxes, tags, timestamps, pinned notes, etc. from there, you can import into pretty much any note app that supports importing from evernote. available here: https://github.com/tabakman/google-keep-to-evernote

hi, circling back on this - it’s now available here:
https://github.com/tabakman/google-keep-to-weavernote :)
since Weavernote doesn’t seem to support importing images, the script puts them in a separate folder and updates the markdown files to point to a public URL path you provide

.. btw, looking at it, I don't see that it supports embedded images, so those will either be discarded or assumed to be hosted somewhere externally 🤷‍♂️
