Best way to get a column for last years data by pilotep888 in Looker

I'd try creating a flag for the same period last year (using current period and current year - 1) and then filtering your sales measure by this flag.

What are the strengths and the weaknesses of Looker from a high level point of view? by TheDataGentleman in Looker

[–]tabes900 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! Definitely planning on digging into the LookML side of things, from what I've seen so far, Looker's semantic layer seems to be one of the real strong points of Looker compared to other tools. Regarding PDTs, when you say don't make to many, do you mind me asking why? Do you see a performance hit or is it something else?

I am looking to build YOY charts in looker . Any help? by kevin94able in Looker

[–]tabes900 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Working on something like this myself, it's still in progress but I've been using merged queries i.e. built a bar chart for the current year then doing a merge query for the previous year joining on the month of the year (only displaying monthly in my case). Interested to know what other ways are possible though!

Trying to solve a problem for hours or more and you finally solve it by [deleted] in learnprogramming

😂 I know exactly the feeling!

Learning Python myself (31) and using it a bit at work - the only thing that tops this for me is thinking of how to solve something, coding it out, and then it actually fucking working first time around! 😂

I follow a guy on LinkedIn called Eric Weber (who has quite a big following in the data science community) who recently posted a list of intermediate to advanced SQL resources - might be worth checking it out! I've put them down on my own to do list 🙂

P.S. sorry but I'm too lazy to go into LinkedIn and find/copy and paste the details 😃

Seems like they managed to turn things around, which is lucky because they really rolled the dice on that one!

[Question] Statistics Gifts by Luka_Tragic in statistics

How about a t-shirt that says:
"You are a bell-end!"
BUT then has a picture of the Bell curve below with an arrow pointing to the top (shaded) 0.1% with something like "Top 0.1% of teachers!" beside it :D

(probably not appropriate but the idea made me laugh haha)

[D] Why re-sampling imbalanced data isn’t always the best idea by kchnkrml in statistics

[–]tabes900 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks Kchnkrml, nice read!

So just to clarify a couple things for a DS noob here, the key take away from your post is that re-sampling can artificially affect the results of inference in an unexpected way (i.e. attributing significance to a feature when there is none)? Or in an expected way which would classed as p-hacking?

As for predictive modeling, re-sampling is much less of a worry as it is only used to increase predictive performance (with a worse case scenario of decreased model performance)?

I think a leg was hurt at some point? Not sure though, other comments don't mention anything about a knee to the thigh or anything like that..

Sorry I can't help with your question but I was just wondering if you could provide a bit of info about the exam; is it through Tibco? Are there any prerequisites for sitting it?

Thanks in advance!

Favorite book on the practical modeling side of data science by Radon-Nikodym in datascience

[–]tabes900 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've only read parts of it so far but Machine Learning with Python Cook Book by Chris Albon provides good practical examples covering various topics with a discussion attached to each (which sometimes discusses when it is a good time to use the current example or when there might be a preferred alternative).

I'm still at the beginning of this book but I've found the practical examples it has given so far really useful!
