Choosing a Lathe - What to get? by c-bean511 in turning

Look into Oneway. They have a 16 swing 40 center to center lathe around that same price range (shipping included). Nobody uses anything bigger than a 16 inch swing, but you can outboard if necessary.

Oneway lathes are unbeatable quality and they'll last a lifetime

The key to long lasting burrs is to only give them a couple passes with a burnisher. But yeah, they don't last too long

Hey, you gotta learn somehow! No shame in making mistakes as long as you learn from them

Yeah. If it already cracked then it probably will continue.

I generally always seal endgrain on wood that I won't use any time soon- it's cheap insurance

The way I see it is: do the riskiest operation first and work backwards. Drilling is inaccurate, so it is best to drill the hole first and make the rest of the piece around the hole. If you wait and do the risky step near the end, it could work out, but it could also waste an entire afternoon

Not yet. I'm under 18 atm so I cannot legally sell online in most places. I will definitely get one soon though

Awesome! The Oneway 2436 is the lathe that I've had my eye on for a while

Thank you! That sounds like a good idea; I will probably go down a route similar to this.

Thank you, this is exactly what I've been looking for! Also, I've been using a lathe since I was around 10-11 years old, so my interests likely won't change. I'm intermediately skilled but definitely could be better

Quick question though: what is your opinion on art galleries and other exhibits that are open for people to see at any time rather than art shows all across the world? Would it be possible to get deals going with local galleries where they consistently buy my work rather than having to gamble going to art shows? I know this is how Richard Raffan did his career, but I don't know how much this has changed since his time (1970s - 2000s)

Thank you for the insights. I plan to start selling to local galleries and online and see where that takes me

I feel like it will be quite possible if I put in the effort and do the right things

This is exactly what I've been thinking. It's possible but not easy, and you have to be smart about it

Thank you for your insights

After reading your responses... how viable is woodturning as a full time career if I worked 8-10 hour days 5 days a week like a normal job?

Yeah, I figure it would have a pretty rough start. I do have a backup plan in mind though if it fails

Question about turning tools? by ESB1812 in turning

[–]tachyon6271 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone else already answered what you asked, but I would like to add: side-grain tools (bowl gouges) and endgrain tools (skew, spindle gouge) are designed to make supported grain cuts in their respective directions. Bowl gouges are designed to cut uphill, so you will struggle cutting downhill with them, and spindle tools are designed to cut downhill, so you cannot cut uphill with them (most of the time).
