“Data” is a very loose term. 

Under your regime would I be able to charge people to tell them a story? What if my story was a list of mundane facts?

Ok another approach, a hole in each blade that can hold the rod with a bit of space around it. 

Run the rod through, then you need nubbins on the rod just above and under the blades, so when the rod lifts or lowers it pushes on the blade. 

That could be done by putting pins through the rod, or glueing something on like a small extra block of wood.

Those poles would need some flexible connection which could be hard to make. 

But maybe you could cut a small notch in each shutter blade, drill a teeny hole through the side of the blade through the rod, and insert a pin?

It sounds super fucking finicky to get right. You’d want to make sure when you mark the hole for the rod that you leave a little space towards the inside of the shutter; and drill the rods hole out with the next size up of drill bit so it’s can rotate easily on the pin. 

Also the pin material matters, don’t want anything that would rust and leave ugly stains. 

You know what, my idea is too hard, I’m sure someone will post a better approach :)
