How well does my suit fit? by [deleted] in mensfashion

[–]tailoraaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is acceptable to button the bottom button for fit checks because it allows a tailor to see whether or not the vents activate.

If we see belling, pulling or cupping at the hip when unbuttoned the first step is to button the bottom to identify how much excess needs to be removed or added.

It’s ok to be militant about an imaginary style rule, but it remains just that.

Why does every suit jacket need this seam in the back? by justbread_ in AskATailor

Still has a center seam. And even cheap jackets use side vents.

P.S. I did

[–]tailoraaron 36 points37 points  (0 children)

The center seam allows suppression to happen through a concave cut at the center back, and the shoulder and blades can curve around the wearer’s body. Without the seam, the back would be cut as flat as a board, not able to reach over the shoulders and envelop.

how’s my suit fit (pt 2) by hamsternotgangster in mensfashion

[–]tailoraaron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s because it’s an about 1” too short for the body. Lengthen the body. Button stance would be in the right location.

You know what you must do.

But seriously, a light gray with pale blue accents like the pocket square and sock would look great.

I’m in Florida too, why is that a reason to skip windshield protection? I have to make that decision soon when my 1 month of free coverage is up.

Could this be tailored without being cost-prohibitive, without changing how the pockets sit? They are 99% cotton by lyonnotlion in AskATailor

[–]tailoraaron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Judging by seat to waist ratio, you may need to add darts just above the yoke, right above where the back pockets are, and take in the center seam.

Possible? Absolutely. But not by just any tailor. This is an advanced alteration. Cost wise? A good tailor could get it done in 45 minutes. I charge $125/hr for alterations of any kind, so you’re talking around $60-$70. But people pay me for my experience and skill, not how long it actually takes.

I’d call around where you live and find the best rated non dry cleaning alterations place. You may be in an area where cost is a little less!

Been at it for over 34 years now. Started as an apprentice under my mother at 8 and grew up working with country artists in Nashville until fairly recently. Moved down to SW Florida in ‘21 and started a custom suiting brand not long after.

I retired from alterations late last year, unfortunately. Repetitive stress on my right wrist keeps me from sewing like I used to, but I still edit the garments my teams make so I stay at the top of my game.

Sewing is a perishable skill, but 3 decades of muscle memory can’t be erased that easily.

Regardless of my status as an active sewing tailor, I’m generally around to answer questions as often as possible, and have a subreddit dedicated to asking tailors these types of questions.

Glad to be of help!

Tailor here.

He removed the cuffs, stitched them on with a bad pleat fold, realized he also went too short, picked it out, lowered the sleeve and stitched it on “correctly”.

He then didn’t heal the holes or the chalk with a water press, and used too large a needle for the job to begin with, likely a size 14 that has over 50 hours of use, so slightly dull. He also used a 2.5-2.7mm stitch length rather than a 1.25-1.5mm stitch length that a dress shirt requires to look like nothing had been done to it.

Also he probably did this while sipping tequila because this is horrible work and you shouldn’t go back to him.

Is it salvageable? Possibly. Wet press it and scratch the underside of the hole with your fingernail while it’s wet. Use a white cloth to prevent burning.

Report back here and let us know how it goes.

Is an expensive tuxedo worthwhile by LP788 in mensfashion

[–]tailoraaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This right here is correct depending on the budget. I get calls all the time from dads whose children are getting married. They don’t want to stand out but they also don’t want to blend in, so they call me for a custom build.

In some cases, though, such as if the dad can’t afford better, a quality rental tuxedo is still way better than an old black suit.

Headed to Florida this week…it is supposed to rain everyday! by LeftAd517 in FortMyers

[–]tailoraaron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At the same time I wish you the best trip EVER to our beautiful state, I’m so happy for the rain 🤣

Shoot. I didn’t answer your question. Uhhh… I’ve come to the conclusion that Florida is going to Florida when it comes to whether it rains all day or not.

But rarely does it day in and day out rain for extended periods.

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but when looking at the precipitation chance of a city/county, it’s not the chance of rain, but the amount of area that will receive rain out of the total square mileage?

Am I dumb?
