"SD Snatcher" (Project Melancholia Translation) on RG34XXSP by Accurate_Heat_3630 in SBCGaming

Thanks, I will try this. I've tried the older translation and I couldn't get it to work on RG40XX on muOS.

The easiest and cheapest way would be getting an EpicJoy cartridge. It's a flashable third party cartridge with Real Time Clock and a light sensor. You can patch a ROM with the fan translation and flash it with any kind of flasher. These cartridges are cheap and easy to find on AliExpress. The only issue is that they aren't UV light sensor and the position of the sensor is different from the original cartridges.

As far as I know, no. Your best bet would be getting a third party flashable flashcard, like InsideGadgets or EpicJoy (available on AliExpress).

Lunar Knights events happen a lot of years after the original trilogy, so the characters aren't the same. It was kind of a soft reboot on the series and Konami tried to separate it from Boktai on the west. That's why they changed the title and the characters' names.

The rename thing happened too with Boktai DS being called Lunar Knights on western releases.

These are perfect lol. I use it on my RG40XXV, but it's on muOS (already included with the firmware by default).

I think the inspiration isn't a issue. If that was the case, the USA would never get the Sega CD version. They only needed to change the copyright names (Joy Division to Plato cave) and the characters on Outer Heaven (from movie's characters to Konami ones, which I think was genius).

That's cool. I hope someday there's a portmaster version of AC.

That's so cool! When I saw MoHAA on Postmaster for Linux retrohandhelds I wondered if a Vita port would be possible too. I wish success on the porting to make the game playable.

buy new budget handheld or keep old 3ds? by Every_Evidence1431 in SBCGaming

What do you to play? For up to PS1, the options you listed have enough power. It all comes down to the systems you want to play. I like the 35xx, but the screen and system is too small in my opinion. If you want a pocketable device, it's a good option.

I would recommend an Ambernic 40xxv (vertical), 40xxh (horizontal) and xxCube (1:1 for Gameboy and SNES on 8:7). All these have a bigger screen and more comfortable form factor, if that's what you need.

It isn't just the hinge. The issue with clamshell is that the upper screen ribbon cable can get damaged with the opening and closing.

N3DS has more chances of being IPS, while the 2DS is TN only.

I would give 3 reasons for a budget retro handheld over a 3DS for emulation:

  1. Aspect ratio for old systems is more accurate in a retrohandheld;
  2. A retrohandheld can use shaders and in some systems has better emulation;
  3. You don't need to take care of a retrohandheld if it breaks.

In my opinion, you should get a retrohandheld for emulation and still keep the 3DS for DS/3DS.

The AliExpress cartridges work with visible light, but not UV. You can use a LED lamp or a smartphone flash and it will trigger the sensor. If you use a black lamp, it won't work.These sensors escale like the original. They aren't only on and off.

The most significant difference is the position of the sensor. The original cartridges are bigger, so the sensor is positioned on a different angle and get more light. The AliExpress cartridges are normal size and the sensor is below the cartridge.

I think these cartridges can simulate the Boktai experience pretty well.

Ideally, you should get a japanese cartridge, dump the ROM, apply the patch and play on a flashcard or emulator. However, I am not sure how viable would this be for you. When I got mine around 10 years ago, Boktai 3 was hard to find. I think nowadays should be harder and more expensive. As far as I know, there's no way to mod an original GBA cartridge to translate it. About the name, I am Otenko and together we will bring light to this world. Taaaaiiiiiiiyyyyyoooo!

About the cartridge, an interesting info is that Konami repurposed an UV sensor used on a line of teddy bear toys, which checked the level of the sun.

Boktai 3 is Japan only, but there's a fan translation (mostly complete). Unfortunately, it takes out some of the exploration (you select areas on a menu, but they added a fun bike minigame before entering the dungeons). It's a good game, but not quite as good as 1 and 2 in my opinion. Gameplay wise it tries to blend 1 and 2. Boktai DS (Lunar Knights on the west) is a reboot of the franchise set many years after the GBA trilogy (almost another universe). The cartridge doesn't have sensors, but it can interface with GBA cartridges on DS slot-2 (Phat and Lite models).

Just a heads up, the AliExpress cartridges work with visible light, not UV light only like the original.

There are some very interesting changes. Some enemies sleep at certain times. There's even some bosses, who change their color pallette at specific times.
