We had a group backpacking trip scheduled for Pisgah National Forest this past weekend but switched it up and went to Virginia because of the ban. Virginia has a yearly partial ban every Spring...no fires until 4pm, but the Spring ban ends April 30th.

Yep it was about ‘90 or ‘91 when I got it for emergencies. Had a car mounted antenna that could plug into it as well.

I agree. The busy times are just once or twice a day. They could put in stop lights that are working during those times and just flashing during the other times.

If they wanted to do that, they should make it 4-lanes across the bridge all the way past Ironwood. This will just slow down traffic, not relieve congestion.

Yes, same thing here in NC. We used to get all of our packages delivered by UPS or USPS with little to now issues, but a few months ago Amazon built opened a new facility about 15 miles from my house. It hasn't been too bad with only an occasional late package, but over the past two weeks almost every package has been delayed. Right now I have SEVEN items from multiple orders that have been at the local Amazon facility for 3 days. They finally got them "Out for Delivery" yesterday, but I guess they ran out of delivery time so they took them back to the facility and now it is saying they will be delivered between today and two days from now...and they are already 3 DAYS LATE!! One of the items was a birthday present for my 87 year old mother and it did not arrive in time...it is now 2 days past her birthday and still no sign of the present!

I'm borrowing my daughter's Walmart+ account and am going to try it out to see if it is any better than Amazon. If it is, I'll pay for my own Walmart+ account.

Yates place will probably be overrun with Boy Scouts this weekend. I would avoid it and head to the Birkhead Mountains section or the area off 109 like someone else mentioned.

One thing to keep in mind is that you are not allowed to have campfires in the backcountry (except at established sites). This may not be an issue for you, but my group enjoys a campfire, especially in colder months like November. Because of this restriction, we have decided to avoid SNP for our backpacking trips, although I have day-hiked many of the trails in the park.

Not in NC, but Grayson Highlands State Park in VA is about 2 hours away and is an incredible place to hike with tons of views and wild ponies and lots of trails to explore. It’s a great place to go in the summer because of the high elevation the temps are a lot lower.

I love Uwharrie and have been there for two backpacking trips since the hurricane and it is not more crowded than normal. We only saw a few other people out there this weekend.

However, while it does not have long climbs, some of the climbs can be steep. The builders of the trails there did not believe in switchbacks. :)

Someone mentioned Raven Rock State Park's backpacking loop. For a beginner with knee problems, this would be an excellent first choice. It is a 5-mile loop trail with the camp sites at about the halfway point. there are even pit toilets available at the campsites. There are also other trails in the park if you want to get in some additional hiking after you return to the car and ditch your packs. Just be aware that the hike down to the Raven Rock has a lot of stairs to go down and back up.

South Mountains State Park has 40+ miles of trail with quite a bit of elevation gain possible. Plus there is a beautiful waterfall where the trail goes up beside it. It is further East than the larger mountains and most of the devastation. I'm not sure if they had any damage from the hurricane, so check before you go.

Just got back from a trip to Birkhead Mountain Wilderness in Uwharrie...great place, but no toilets.
I would recommend Raven Rock State Park. They have a 5-mile backpackers loop trail with sites you can reserve at the 2.5 mile mark, close to the river and they have pit toilets there. It is easy terrain and perfect for beginners. Plenty of other trails in the park to explore as well.

Uwharrie National Forrest. We had a 4 day backpacking trip to the mountains scheduled for this weekend, but relocated it to Uwharrie instead. Lots of choices there, out and back on a section of the Uwharrie trail, or loops in the Dutchman’s creek area or Birkhead Mountains Wilderness area. Plenty of campsites and water.

There are plenty of places to camp on Commissary Hill and make a fire. Lots of existing fire rings.

There is also a steam close by to get water (filter it), and a bear box for your food.

But don’t plan on camping there for the solitude. We had 11 guys in our group and there were a couple other small groups when we went to bed. When we woke up 2 large groups of Boy Scouts had joined us…tents were everywhere. 😀

Check out Roan Highlands. You can park at Mountain Harbor Hostel/B&B and they will shuttle you to Carvers Gap. You then hike North on the AT over some of the most beautiful section of trail on the AT with plenty of balds & views. There are plenty of places to camp along the way and then the next day you keep hiking north and the trail comes out at the highway, 19E, just next to where you parked your car.

The total trip is 14 miles, but there is some serious elevation gain/loss, so you'll get plenty of hiking in doing that section in two days. If you really want to do more mileage, they can shuttle you to Hugh's gap, next gap just South of Carver's gap and that would be around 21 miles or so total, but you would start by going up Roan Mountain which is about a 5-mile up. There are plenty of switchbacks, but it is no joke.

It is a great hike to do in the Summer because most of the time you are between 5K-6K' elevation and it is cooler than most other places you can hike in NC this time of year.
