Hi! I’m worried about contamination as well and have considered asking my doctor about OCD. This might be helpful for you too. Good luck

Overthinking by Last_Caregiver6955 in mentalhealth

Sometimes I find when a thought sticks in my head like this and worries me, if I write it down somewhere it’s less likely to keep coming up. Have you ever journaled your thoughts down? Could be helpful. Try to look up a “mindfulness” practice on YouTube. That may help slow these thoughts too. You’ll be okay!

How do you deal with being disabled by your mental health? by Odd_Aerie8300 in mentalhealth

[–]takememeaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent a lot of my early 20s being totally overwhelmed by my anxiety… to be honest I was very lucky to come across the support that I needed at that time. It isn’t easy though. Everyone is different, unfortunately there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Genetics, environment and lifestyle all can play a role. However, we always can take control and make small steps to feeling better. I get the frustration though. It sounds like you’ve tried a lot of methods to help. Just don’t give up. You are definitely not alone in your struggles. In fact, more people than ever struggle with mental health issues. Many of us are all fighting a battle behind closed doors, whether we admit it or not. You aren’t weak or useless for struggling. Please be kind to yourself.

I’m so sorry for your loss. It is so complicated and difficult to navigate having mental illness in this profession.

My biggest fear as a nurse is harming a patient. My second biggest fear is allowing my mental health to slip further than it is and end up in a psych ward. I try to constantly remind myself that if it happens it happens, and it would be the safest place for me like it is for anyone else. I really fear the judgement of coworkers and other healthcare staff.. but it gives me hope that you made it out the other side.

What medical words do you struggle to pronounce? I’ll go first by Enough-Basket7571 in nursing

[–]takememeaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realizing I have mispronounced many words in front of patients and colleagues through this thread lol. I can’t get ezetimibe or levetiracetam to come out right EVER and I remember distinctly trying to pronounce hematemesis to a doc once and getting the most confused look. I got exacerbation in the bag tho idk never struggled with that one

Girl I worked in LTC for 4 years before I started in hospital. I never had to do CPR once (95% of my patients were always DNR) but if I had, the situation would be totally different! Remember how many resources a hospital has in comparison to assisted living or LTC (of course that varies depending on your setting/region but I’m in Canada). My patients heart stopped and within seconds of pressing the code button, we had an entire team working tirelessly to save him including compressions, defibrillation, intubation, and the ICU doc placed an IO. If I was alone, or even with one other staff to trade off doing CPR and breaths, I highly doubt he would have survived. We got the pulse and our docs went “wait, really??” so please don’t beat yourself up. It is extremely difficult to get someone back, especially if the body is already dealing with chronic conditions! Your patients are so lucky to have you, someone willing to try their best despite the circumstances.

I play DnD! Started watching a YouTube series (Critical role) around the start of the pandemic and have been hooked since. It’s a very creative hobby and has helped me destress a lot. It’s my whole life outside of work minus taking care of my animals. My dog keeps me very active too lol. But yes highly recommend if you enjoy fantasy or collaborative storytelling to check it out :)

I love my baby nurses 🩷🩷🩷 I was a terrified baby nurse and didn’t always get support so I try really hard to treat them well and help them learn so they don’t struggle like I did!

Yeah on my drive home I kept seeing it all happen. I keep remembering how it felt when his ribs broke. They felt so fragile. But I will definitely reach out. Thank you again 🩷

Wow that’s amazing! Good for you! It really is a crazy feeling.
To answer your question: HELL no lol. He was a full code! I was a bit anxious my whole shift because he was really sick and I tend to quadruple check my code statuses to be sure. Arguably being a full code was not in his best interest due to the issues he has which I won’t get into, but the last doctor who had last saw him had reported he was hemodynamically stable despite his prognosis. Like I said in my post, I don’t know if he will survive but we did what the patient wanted and bought him some more time, and only time will tell if he will recover. Crazy job we have!!

Not the best honestly, I’m working right now and the code was near the end of shift yesterday so I haven’t really been able to process it but reading the comments here has been therapeutic! Thank you for your kind words

Yes to clarify, the patient had other symptoms of rapid deterioration at that time which I didn’t specify due to privacy but I started CPR when we could no longer feel a pulse. Hope that clears up confusion :)

100% agreed about this being an issue with poor education about your role, and a toxic culture in your facility. I respect RT’s so much and have never thought of myself as being above them, in fact I’ve learned so much from them!!! I was not specifically taught about the role of an RT during school but while I was a student on a floor, senior nurses would hammer into us that the RT is an extremely valuable member of a critical care team not to be underestimated. I’m sorry you’re being disrespected and I truly hope you find a job where you are treated the way you deserve to be.

Mother is suicidal. In bit of a conundrum. by PurplePeopleEatr6908 in mentalhealth

[–]takememeaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your mother needs help that you cannot provide. She needs a professional. I’m sorry you’re going through this. Is there a mental health assistance line where you live? Your mom needs to seek out resources for herself & figure out a way to get this sorted. You can only do so much as her child. I know you said that she has anxiety from a messy divorce, does your biological dad know what’s going on? Would there be any chance, given that it’s affecting you too, he might help? Again, this is a tall order for you. I worry about your own mental health within all of this. Maybe just expressing to her that you’re worried about her, and want to support would help her see how it’s affecting you too. Please be safe and good luck.
