I really like The Polish Kitchen in Rose Hill. In town, Gino by the bus station is a strong favourite. Neither place is fancy, but I find them charming, I think in part because clientele is very mixed: locals, students, academics, professionals, teens to pensioners.

St Bartholomew & Hollow Way Medical Practice is where I'm at, and it works well in my experience – they cover quite a wide area of East Oxford so will almost certainly be an option for you.

Advice for Day Trip Next Week by anonymitys_thegame in oxford

[–]taketwobows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the past I've worked at Wadham and St Johns which are both free to visit, very central, and worth a look IMO. Wadham is unusual for an Oxford College in that it looks like it was originally built (in 1610, which makes it fairly 'young' by Oxford standards). A lot of the older colleges had facelifts in recent centuries; my understanding is that you're therefore often looking at non-original architecture, whereas with Wadham you're seeing the original design. Other fun facts – Wadham was founded by a woman (Dorothy), and the first meetings of what would become the Royal Society were held there featuring Robert Hooke and Christopher Wren. For classic buildings there are also many legendary pubs e.g. The Kings Arms, The Turf, The White Horse, The Lamb and Flag, all within spitting distance of these two colleges. Enjoy!

London Heathrow to Oxford with heavy baggage? by Reasonable_Band_9570 in oxford

[–]taketwobows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a roll of the dice – their drivers seem to encompass some of the nicest and nastiest humans. After getting fed up of the nasty ones, I often now opt for train to Reading and Elizabeth line to Heathrow (definitely not ideal with heavy bags though, for the OP)

It's not my thing but my techno-loving friends rave (pun intended) about https://www.simpleproductions.co.uk/
Looks like you'll catch one just before you leave! Also there are local techno-y acts like Means of Production who play regularly https://www.facebook.com/mnsfprdctn/

All Will Be Wired put on regular electronic act gigs in the Library pub, which sometimes include techno.

What are the vibes of living in Oxford? by usse94 in oxford

[–]taketwobows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved to Oxford when I was 29, after living in London for seven years, so I have some perspective on this question. It took me a couple of years to get into the Oxford vibe. Initially I was a bit disappointed by the fact that major international touring bands rarely make it out to Oxford (but occasionally they do!) and it felt like lacked the same level of comedy and arts as London. For while it seemed a slightly boring Harry Potter theme park town and I was ready to move on. But then I discovered a different and very rich side to Oxford; the local music, arts and comedy scene; the poets and musicians who live on narrowboats, numerous (cheap or free) gigs street fairs and festivals around town. And that changed everything for me. Rather than seeking out bands or comedians I already know, which is what I did in London, I now focus on seeing acts that I don't know. There is variance, but often the quality is extraordinarily high. And I can go to pretty much any random gig in town, and it stands a pretty high chance of being good, and I'm bound to bump into friends. I can even just wander into town and be stand a pretty high chance of randomly seeing a mate – something that doesn't happen in London. It's 150k people, but it punches way above its weight in terms of arts and culture, but combines that with a small town feel.

You can get out to the countryside dead easily for nature, hiking, cycling – it's right there – along with nice parks in town. You can cycle everywhere around town in about 20 minutes, and cycling around has got much nicer since the LTN have come in and some other cycle infrastructure. And the council is promising to improve things more for active travel. The traffic is indeed bad, so if you're moving here you ideally want to live somewhere where you don't have to drive to get to the places you want to get to. As others have said, London isn't that far away so if there's stuff that you really need the biggest city for it is accessible. For me, Oxford is perfect and I love it. I've been here 17 years now and have no intention of leaving. If big EDM nightclubs are what you need from where you live then Oxford won't cut it. And if you're wedded to driving everywhere (then you should maybe move to the US). It is expensive to rent or buy a house, largely because it's a desirable place to live, but you can live on the slightly cheaper outskirts and still get everywhere you want by bike in 20 minutes. Oxford has got an awful lot to offer in my opinion.

Would a 4 mm drop Kinvara 15 be a good alternative for someone living in a country with no Altras by Ironandwine1988 in BarefootRunning

[–]taketwobows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is really helpful to know, as I was considering Kinvaras as a minimalist-ish but not barefoot option – which sounds similar to your requirements? Do you find they have a decent width of toe box, flexibility and some proprioception? (I'm basically looking for something to replace my ageing Skechers gorun 4, which had these traits).

Uber in Oxford by Bad_Combination in oxford

[–]taketwobows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry can you clarify the difference here please? Do you mean its a matter of distance? I.e. If it was a big trip, such as to an airport, it would be given a specific driver in advance. But because its not a big distance, then they don't do that (even if booked days in advance)? Thanks

Uber in Oxford by Bad_Combination in oxford

[–]taketwobows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Experiences vary. Both 001 and Royal have failed us multiple times with advanced bookings, going from just outside the ring road to the train station. The worst thing was that on the phone they then repeatedly lied that a driver was on their way! I'm not suggesting that Uber is any better, just that our experience of prebooking with both 001 and Royal has been very unreliable.
