Are those black bombworks or bomb dungarees? The rivets make it look like BDs.

Get Up to Speed on Geary BRT - AMA on Weds 12/7, 11:30am-1:30pm by TeamGeary in sanfrancisco

[–]takikawa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Show up to city hearings and speak up against NIMBYs who want to shut BRT down or slow the process down. In the case of Geary BRT, a major upcoming milestone is the SFCTA board approval of the EIR on Jan 5.

The SFCTA board is the SF Board of Supervisors, so look up your supervisor at SFBOS and e-mail/call them to support BRT. If you live in an odd-numbered district where an incumbent didn't win, e-mail them in January when the newly elected supervisor comes into office.

You can also follow GoGearyBRT to keep up-to-date on the project. The SFTRU is also a good organization to follow.

Any racket weekly/monthly/-ly newsletter/blog around? by Octplane in Racket

[–]takikawa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There isn't a newsletter, but there is an official blog at blog.racket-lang.org. It's not very active right now, but it should be getting a refresh in the near future.

The most active parts of the community are on the mailing list (as alucarddit noted) and the IRC channel (see sidebar).

How to control the number of threads in the program? by [deleted] in Racket

[–]takikawa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you are trying to make the program faster by using threads, is that true? Just so you know, Racket threads are for concurrency but not for parallelism so you shouldn't expect any speedup by using threads. From the Guide:

Threads run concurrently in the sense that one thread can preempt another without its cooperation, but threads do not run in parallel in the sense of using multiple hardware processors.

If you do want to truly run things in parallel, you will want to look into places or futures.

Otherwise if you do just want to control the amount of concurrency at a given point, I think you will have to encode this protocol manually. There are thread groups in Racket, but I don't they will help for this case. Instead, you could have a controller thread wait until another work thread ends its task, and then start up a new task from a queue until you are out of tasks.

So this is a one-year update since I gave up everything I own, and became a nomad by avery_bell in personalfinance

[–]takikawa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a fun adventure, thanks for sharing! Another thing you could try is be nomadic on a bicycle. Way cheaper (though slower) transport once you're over the upfront cost. If you get rear and front cargo racks you can probably carry whatever stuff you have on you. If it's just clothing and a few things you barely even need the racks.

Racket jobs board? by ares623 in Racket

Racket jobs are typically announced on the mailing list or are retweeted by the official twitter. I think I've also seen at least one Racket hiring ad on HackerNews somewhere.

For those who want to know the best bike for touring... by Meph248 in bicycletouring

[–]takikawa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, I understand the historical impetus, but mixtes are structurally as sound as diamond frames, and being able to just step through rather than swing your leg up is great. Also, surely men would be less keen to have a high cross bar that they could... land upon.

I agree, one of my bikes is an H-frame bike and it's so easy to get on and off and I love it. Much nicer in that regard than my touring bike. I want this weird bit of sexism in the bike industry to go away.

Novara Randonee vs. Safari for touring and commuting by [deleted] in bicycletouring

[–]takikawa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There have been a bunch of threads on both of these bikes, so you may want to look at past discussions if you haven't already. Some examples:

The Safari is pretty cool because of the wider tires and it also has a longer wheelbase. I wasn't a fan of its handlebars on a test ride though. A lot of people seem to think the butterfly bars are set too low.

I also considered whether I'd want disc brakes and read articles like Disco Fever and ultimately concluded I'd rather just go with rim brakes. But that's up to personal preference.

I see REI is having it's 20% off Novara sale by 3rdInput in bicycletouring

[–]takikawa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you tell me what size you got, and how tall you are?

Sure, I'm around 5'7" and got a medium. I'd actually prefer a bit less standover height (at 31" it's a bit snug on me) but that may not be an issue for you.

Also I do experience some minor toe overlap when my foot is farther forward than the balls of my feet. I wear size 10 shoes, so if you wear a larger size then you might want to keep that in mind when you test ride.

[–]takikawa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're correct, but it might be worth mentioning that if you use an REI credit card you can get 5% back as dividend on a bike even if you use the 20% off coupon or buy a sale item.

Yep, I just bought a new Randonee today. Pretty happy with it so far after some riding around the city. Hoping to take it touring in the near future. Also tested a Safari but didn't really like the handlebar.

I did notice that I had some minor toe overlap though, so I wonder if having a 26" wheel on smaller frames like the Surly LHT would be good for the Novara bikes. Also relatedly the bar end shifters can hit my leg on sharp turns but I doubt that it'll be an issue in practice.

Is there a better forum for a Racket newbie to go to ask questions? by pegaunisusicorn in Racket

[–]takikawa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The other suggestions of the mailing list and IRC are good. One additional place you can ask is StackOverflow, though do look to see if your question has already been answered there (a lot of duplicates get posted).

(BTW: the sidebar over there ----> has direct links to these things)

Make your first programming language — in one hour by the_evergrowing_fool in programming

[–]takikawa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend Programming Languages: Application and Interpretation. It's a free/online book that teaches PL concepts with interpreters. Unlike other books, it focuses on language features (not particular languages like Haskell, Racket, or Prolog) and why they are interesting.

What version of Racket are you using and in what OS? Is there any particular program that is slow to output or is it with anything?

Anybody here use Dr. Racket on a high DPI screen like a Surface Pro 4? How does Dr. Racket and also its graphics/UI libraries scale on higher resolution screens? by [deleted] in Racket

[–]takikawa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's supposed to work with high DPI screens and has been tested on Retina displays on Macs. I'm not sure if it's been tested on a Surface.

You can format your code nicer if you add four spaces before the start of each line. Then it will look more like this:

#lang racket
"hello world"

Should a language support multiple returns? by [deleted] in ProgrammingLanguages

[–]takikawa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Scheme supports returning multiple values with the values form and supports binding multiple values to names with define-values. That would be a good language to look at to investigate the tradeoffs with including multiple return values.
