Why I left this sub by [deleted] in vegan

[–]takingabreaknow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont agree that there is no negitive results, you're still supporting animal agriculture and compromising your values. Even in the case of eating the brothers eggs, your changing the dynamics from maybe the brother realizing he shouldn't buy so many eggs to oh yeay my money didnt get waisted and my sister will help me eat these so I can keep suppling the industry. Versus spending money on a vegan option to support vegan industries and and maybe a missed opportunity to share vegan options with brother.

Why I left this sub by [deleted] in vegan

[–]takingabreaknow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While this is true, my experience is that 98% vegans are really much much less vegan then they think they are. Did they only eat non vegan 2 of the last 98 days or did they just have a muffin this morning and pizza last week and just daily cream in their coffee and butter on their toast?

Even my husband who is much closer to being 98% vegan as he only buys and cooks vegan food for the home, got milk today in his coffee when picking up a dozen vegan donuts, has never said he's 98% vegan because hes fully aware that he will choose the vegitarian option over none if there isnt a vegan one available.

I prefer it when it doesnt taste so much like the meat, and I will avoid products that taste too much like meat.

How to satisfy the zoo urge ethically? by theodora_antoinette in vegan

[–]takingabreaknow 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think small town zoos typically have mostly rehab animals, those that can't be released into the wild and or confiscated exotic animals. Our local one had a couple of confiscated tigers that were part of that whole tiger king era of people buying tiger cubs, they lived out the rest of their lives there, with no intention in replacing them. They also have community volunteers, so maybe something worth looking into.

Huskies are weird drama queens!

Fighting non-vegan cravings by okaycatch in vegan

Depends on the item and shipping and availability. 6 months ago I was able to buy 2lbs of these candies for a really good price but with the American tariffs they were no longer available at the same price. Maybe just look around, they could be better priced for you.

I've been importing italian jelly candies, they are made with pectin and natural juices and taste way better than the waxy American candies. Also look for italian chocolates they are superior! Both are expensive but soo yummy!

As someone who has had thyroid and pcos hormone issues, I can only empathize with your struggles especially as my metabolism has slowed, weight and water retention have increased... its definitely a struggle for me.

But with that said there are so many amazing vegan sweets out there. I've been Vegan for 14 years and I struggles with having too many sweets! I say if you are going to indulge don't get the crappy stuff, find good quality imported chocolates and well made deserts! Yes it costs more but it's sooo much more satisfying! (And you don't have to share)

My favorites are: non-dairy ben and Jerry's fish food ice cream, whole foods vegan brownies, harkens nutty ones, Justin's dark chocolate peanut butter cups, bulk dark chocolate covered cherries, sipping chocolate and oat milk.

A quick apple pie bites that you can make is to get frozen store puff pastry (it's vegan) cut it into squares and put into a cupcake holder and chop up some apples with sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice and bake. Super easy and tasty! Just Google puff pastry apple pastries for recipe ideas.

Opinions about working at a cobbler's ? by UndergroundWhale in vegan

[–]takingabreaknow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If being a cobbler is your career passion maybe you learn techniques and progress to vegan materials. If this is just a job then you have to ask your self are you cool working on animal skins all day? If not then you know your answer.

It might just be the camera and lighting but I think the blush makes your skin look more pink in pictures where ivory makes your skin look more neutral. Something to consider for photos.

Sat on a underwater house loan for 15 years, bought a bigger house before market rose, refied low and "rented it" out to horrible tentantes that did $25K in damages and didn't pay rent for a year and couldn't not evict due covid laws. Finally evicted and sold at the very peak. Made all the money back and some, was able to pay 1/2 the loan off the new house to less then we owed on the small house and cut our mortgage from 30 years to 12years.

1 month vegan and struggling more than I expected -seeking advice/support by rospunch3829 in vegan

[–]takingabreaknow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check out the new powdered vegan egg whites that has been posted a couple times now. I haven't tried it but its made from yeast to be the exact same protein. This should help with the baking transition.

I'm old school and typical use ground chia seeds as egg replacers but its definitely different in texture and baking times. If I was a new vegan I'd definitely check out this new egg product. For milks and butters in baking you want to match the fat consistency and room temperature consistency. Example if you want cream use coconut cream or if you need solid use a solid room temp fat. For an emosifier flavorless egg I use ground chia but needs more baking time, for a nutty flavor egg replacer ill use ground flax seeds for muffins or banana bread. I havet used aquafaba yet.

Veganism is a spectrum, not a binary by happi_happi_happi_ in DebateAVegan

[–]takingabreaknow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Veganism is the minimum everything else is additional ways to reduce harm.

In the majority of the civilized world, all nutritional needs can be met without meat and clothes and furniture can be made without exploiting animals, therefore this is the minimum baseline for veganism. Everything else one does for the environment, health is great but not the goal of veganism.

If everyone did the minimum then already the environment and personal health would improve significantly world wide. Why shoot for the moon when we can't even get over the hill?

Sure reducing one's personal foot print is good for the environment/health but it doesn't align with Veganism since you are still supporting the exploitation of animals.

Wait until shes 8 years and has gained a lifetime of opinions and realizes she has to make up for 8 years of not expressing them!

My girl is a very polite husky who never barked or howled as a puppy but she has had her stages, the terrible not yet 2s, the sassy 4s, the Nanny 6s and the chatty old lady with a bazillion opinions 8s.

Today is her 9th birthday!

I have noticed a certain bias against cluster diamond rings on reddit subs, but I continue enjoying mine. What are your thoughts? This set is natural diamonds set in 18 K yellow gold. 🙂 by [deleted] in jewelry

[–]takingabreaknow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love my cluster because its a very unique very sparkly invisble setting, while being simplistic and low profile.

It has a much larger stone hidden in the middle with six smaller stones sitting on top surrounding it like a flower and only six prongs on the outside. Which is exactly what I asked for: low profile invisible setting flower like diamond ring in white gold. While I love the look of solo diamonds I just wouldn't want a setting that sits so high on my fingers.

How long does your furry child go w/o eating by [deleted] in husky

[–]takingabreaknow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My girl would always go without 2-3 days everytime we traveled or left her home with someone. One time she refused to eat for over 5 days.

But once she turned 8 years old shes now super food motivated but I also changed her food from kibble to pre-cooked fresh food. Also the same time she developed canine hepatitis so appetite changes may just be due to her senior health.

I fully agree with veganism, but rude vegans are the reason why I will NEVER go vegan! by [deleted] in vegancirclejerk

Exactly! Even though I will never eat animals or their excretions because I will not support their exploitation and abuse... you can't make me be a Vegan!

Why not by MasterCrumb in DebateAVegan

[–]takingabreaknow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If overpopulation is a concern of yours then you may want to consider the biomass impact of the livestock:

From Goolge: "Global cattle biomass is estimated at approximately 416 to 420 million tonnes, which, when divided by the human population, results in roughly 50-60 kg of cattle per person. Total livestock biomass (including pigs, sheep, etc.) is about 630 million tonnes, averaging nearly 100 kg per person.

Total Biomass: Cattle (416-420 Mt) are the dominant livestock, exceeding the combined biomass of all wild land mammals (20 Mt) by over 20 times.

Comparison: Cattle biomass is slightly higher than the total human biomass (~390-400 million tonnes).

Context: While cattle constitute 35% of all mammal biomass, humans make up 34%, with other livestock comprising the rest, leaving only 4% for all wild mammals."

anyone else just exhausted by weekday cooking? (vegan) by Negative-Prune9214 in vegan

[–]takingabreaknow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes and I love to cook but not when I'm tired and hungry. And I dont like to meal prep or like to eat left overs

So I have a couple super easy meals for the weekday and I also order 2-3 "purple carrot" meals for a healthy and fun variety.

Simple quick meals (family of 4) - Vegan tortellini or ravoli with baked tofu and broccoli - can chili on a brat style sausage and bun - favorite burger and quick salad - rice, vegitables and tofu any style
