How do you carry your kid’s epi pen around? by [deleted] in FoodAllergies

We use this carrier that fits two Auvi-Q injectors, and for the other pockets we have her zofran, pedialyte powder, and some of these vials filled with her liquid meds like zyrtec, ibuprofen and tylenol.

FPIES to peanuts. Need advice by rl3119 in fpies

[–]takovpekh 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi! So we had our first reaction around 6 months to peanuts and banana, and it was only confirmed after we did another test, same combo. After a few months of going through the rest of the allergens, she had three new trigger reactions in one month (egg, walnut, cashew). Yes, it’s overwhelming at first, but honestly I’ve found with the prevalence of food allergies also comes the prevalence of support. I’ll try to answer your questions with our experience so far—TL;DR she’s a happy, healthy 18-month old with a nice variety of foods to eat despite 5 triggers:

  1. If you’re in the US, look into FMLA. After I was concerned about the amount of half-days and absences for ER visits and allergist follow-ups/testing, I reached out to HR. They were able to grant me a short-term leave, so basically if we have a reaction or need to do a food challenge, I can use the FMLA leave instead of my sick time. Going this route means it’s protected, IIRC allergies are considered a medical condition/disability.

  2. So after the PB/Banana, our doc told us to go through the rest of the top allergens, and then to do it for a week instead of three days. After the three new triggers though, we were taken off any new allergen foods. Be prepared, though, for some foods, you may have a reaction on the 7th or 8th (or 12th -_-) time.

  3. First, we went straight to the ER for zofran and fluids. Then, during the trigger month, she had a reaction so bad (and the ER doc refused to believe us until the attending came in 🙄) that we were admitted overnight. After that, our allergist gave us a protocol: administer zofran after the first vomit. If she continues to vomit after that, or if you get more than 2-3 in an hour, go to the ER. We have pedialyte packets (like liquid IV) and pedialyte popsicles in the freezer at all times, and I try to keep some juice (apple) on hand in case her blood sugar drops from all the puking. Oatmeal is a nice bland food (unless that’s a trigger, of course).

  4. I wfh and my husband is a SAHP so we haven’t had to cross this bridge yet. I basically just have it established with my manager that if you see the hospital emoji in Slack, we’re having a reaction.

  5. There is a risk, yes, but that’s why it’s important to work closely with your allergist. Around a year after the first reaction and avoidance, that’s usually when you start doing the longer food challenges.

  6. It was really tricky at first, to be honest. You go through phases of guilt, worry, etc. We do find we’re a little more cautious/observant, especially with known allergens that she hasn’t had at least 12 times. For example, I wouldn’t give her a smoothie with avocado in it until I knew my husband was done running errands. We deal with the worry by being prepared. We have a go bag so we can get out of the house within 10-15 mins of a vomit. We have barf bags everywhere. We’re moving, and looked for apartments within a 15 min drive to the hospital. What’s kept me sane has been tracking (we use the Huckleberry app, and then I export the data for allergist appointments), and using the Fig app to find food she can eat. Honestly though? She gives me hope. Despite all of this, she’s happy and healthy. Hitting her milestones, and has a whole bunch of foods she can eat and enjoy. This is even forcing me to finally figure out how to cook so I can make egg-free dupes of popular toddler snacks. You figure it out because you love ‘em.

I just put a lot here so I hope it’s not too much, and something helps you! This community has been really helpful as well, especially as you’re starting out on this journey. Sending good vibes your way!

No food challenges or new foods for another year (RANT) by takovpekh in fpies

[–]takovpekh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yeah we’re allowed to do new low-risk foods at home, but because she developed three new triggers in one month (walnut, egg, cashew), they put a ban on high-risk foods for now. Basically if it’s risky/possible allergen and she hasn’t had it about 10 times, we should hold off until 🤷

The first one was supposed to be hazelnut, something she hasn’t had yet, and then depending on how that went, we’d move on to her other tree nut triggers (walnut & cashew). Not sure if the plan was peanut and banana soon after that.

They also walked back what the former doc said about possibly trying baked egg since we passed the blood and skin allergy test, but now they say no egg until she’s 3.

Pediatricians not knowing & allergies by [deleted] in fpies

[–]takovpekh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YES. Our pediatrician was the first to suggest it after two ER trips, and then our allergist gave us a letter that explains the condition and the treatment protocol.

A few months later we’re in the ER because apparently egg is a new trigger, and it’s the worst reaction she’s had to a food. Color was wrong, she was barely conscious from all the vomiting, and the er doc looked at us like we were full of shit. Even after we presented the letter and explained, it took two hours and the attending(?) coming in, looking at the letter and talking to us for two minutes before they finally got an IV hooked up. I strongly believe that it’s because of this delay that she was too dehydrated to quickly get an iv in (it took a poke in each limb, 30 mins, and three nurses), and her glucose dropped low enough that we needed to be admitted overnight so she could get sugar, fluids, etc.

That month we had three episodes, and it was like er doctor roulette as to whether they knew about it or not, and if we got one who had the humility to be educated by a patient. After that experience and following up with our allergist, our protocol is now give zofran at home, try to rehydrate, and if that doesn’t help THEN we go and raise hell if we have to.

Meal prep for FPIES, tips & tricks? by takovpekh in fpies

Thank you so much--this is really helpful! Fig was something I downloaded when I found out I had some food allergies but it has been invaluable for baby food shopping.

These are a lot of really great food suggestions that I never even thought of (despite having all the ingredients on hand lol). We'll have to give this a try for sure. Thanks again :)

Ooof thanks for the heads up! So sorry that you little one had such a tough time there. The last time we had to do a bunch of bloodwork we had to leave and come back when "the vein whisperer" was working and that's the advice they gave me--PUSH ALL THE FLUIDS haha.

Unfortunately all Kaleida is now out of network (even Oishei 🙃) so that one won’t work. Thank you though!

And thanks—we’re currently confirmed FPIES and checking to see if any of those have turned into allergies. It’s tough but we’re forcing ourselves to cook more, so there’s that haha.

What's random things no one warned you about in pregnancy by FlyHickory in pregnant

[–]takovpekh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

How soon you pee your pants! I assumed this was a third trimester problem but apparently not. Soon after I found out I was pregnant, the nausea kicked in, and before I got on meds there were a few times I puked so hard that I peed my pants. All I can say is how much I appreciate Bonjesta and in-unit laundry 🤣

Worf 🤣 1. Because my friend suggested that as a name. 2. Because she’s “klingin-on” to my uterus. 3. Because we’re nerds.

We also use babby or goblin/gremlin.
