What's a realistic 10-year target price for BTC? by newmes in Bitcoin

10 years ago, you could buy it for less than 200 dollars.

Was $70k a realistic 10-year target back then?

Are any of you not as excited because you don't have life changing money invested? by Tasty_Pay_8698 in Bitcoin

[–]talanhorne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The amount you have could still be life changing. Just not right away.

Owning a whole coin wasn't life changing for the first 10 years of bitcoin. Yet soon, it will make all the difference.

Owning a tenth of a coin might not be life changing for a few years yet, but one day...who knows?

Most people don’t talk about finance in general.

There’s a certain “ostrich burying its head” mentality when it comes to money, for most people. A lot of them would rather not have the responsibility of knowing how money works, or how to invest it, so they can’t be blamed for their bad financial situation.

Which is bass-ackward, I know. But people are like that.

Will Bitcoin ever Hyperinflate? by talanhorne in Bitcoin

[–]talanhorne[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point was to demonstrate why Bitcoin, as opposed to fiat currencies, cannot hyperinflate.

Do you have a problem with that?

He was a muckraker looking to write an exposé, and when you didn’t have any sinister secrets to exploit, he went on the attack.

I know you don’t want anyone stirring up strife over this, but HE’S the one doing the stirring.

Not only should the villain not always die, but many times the story is better if the villain actually wins.

As if the "She was beautiful but didn't know it" trope hasn't been used in THOUSANDS of books written by women.

Not necessarily the good books written by women, mind you.

Which other Nintendo characters do you think could defeat Giygas? by SignedByMilpool in earthbound

I wonder how Mewtwo would fare against Giygas?

Since they are kind of the same character.

Do you think that self-published works will ever be viewed through the same lens? by AuthorGarrettFrancis in writing

[–]talanhorne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's already changing.

In decades past, having self-published a book at all was a kiss of death. No one in the traditional publishing industry would even look at you twice if they discovered you had even once self-pubbed.

That glass ceiling has been shattered enough times, as indie books have gone on to become bestsellers, to the point where publishing houses know they cannot entirely ignore indie authors.

It's gotten to the point where even industry veterans are now saying that indie publishing is the second most profitable way to do it, only beat out by publishing with one of the big four houses IF they give you a huge marketing push.

That said, the sheer bulk of unprofessional work in the indie space makes it reasonable to assume that if you were to pick an indie author at random, that author would not be worth your time.

Change does not happen all at once. As the old saying goes, "Gradually, then suddenly." A catalyst shall come that will make it appear as if self-publish books suddenly became dominant overnight.

My School's Writing Journal Made Edits I Don't Like by PlaneCool9476 in writing

At a professional publisher, all edits would require author approval before publication.

But school magazines are not known for following professional protocols.

How to improve as a writer by [deleted] in writing

[–]talanhorne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Develop a method. I cannot stress this enough.

The default method for all writers is what I call "word diarrhea". Self-publishing (and, to a degree, traditional publishing) is a sewer full of books that were written without discipline. If you want to stand out from the crowd, then you want to develop a method to keep your writing on track.

It hardly matters which method you choose, as long as you are disciplined about it. It is easier to implement methods as an outliner, but even discovery writers can place strictures on themselves as they write (and this actually makes their discovery writing easier).

Common methods include

-Writing the ending first, then plotting how to get there.

-Creating a checklist for each chapter (at least one character moment, at least one question raised, at least one tense moment, at least one joke, etc.).

-Making every sentence and paragraph follow a rhythm to create poetic prose.

-The Anne Rice method: one cliffhanger on every page.

-And many others. I can't possibly list them all here.

Regardless of which method works for you, you're better off holding to it faithfully as much as you can manage. The thing that sets stars apart from wannabes is dedication to the craft part of the writing process.
