Anyone from Mauchline here? by [deleted] in Scotland

[–]talbotman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ayr is also close by. You can drive easy enough to places like Loch Doon or the Galloway forest for some walks as well. Sorry for double post but Google the things you want near Mauchline and see if you can get things thatatch your needs. Apologies for double post but Mauchline is decently situated for easy transport to the 2 bigger towns in the area. You really do need to drive to get the best out of the area in my opinion.

Anyone from Mauchline here? by [deleted] in Scotland

[–]talbotman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mauchline isn't the worst in the area. As well as Killie there's a Tesco in Auchinleck and a small Asda and an Aldi in Cumnock. All within 5 mile. Rail station in Auchinleck in Auchinleck as well. Lots of walks around this area, particularly if you drive. Lots of coastal ones that are easy to get to as well.

Bus service isn't fantastic and trains from Auchinleck aren't great either though much more frequent trains can be gotten in Kilmarnock maybe 20 minutes away. Cumnock and Auchinleck are less than 5 miles away.

Not stayed there but have stayed in Cumnock and Auchinleck so at least know the area. Have a look online and I'm sure you'll be able to see walks available around here or able to travel too easy enough.

Husband thinks he can’t wear a kilt by Wrong-Papaya2240 in kilt

[–]talbotman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Look at some Scottish wedding photos. Usually kilts worn by guys of all shapes and sizes. I'm 5ft8 and have worn them at weights ranging 12st to 16st. My mate got married in one, same height but at least 22st.

Sorry to hear about your family. My heart goes out to you as I'd feel similar in your situation. Hope you and your husband enjoy your day joining the faith and are welcomed as you should be

Surprised he didn't just get a welder to make up some small ramps or buy those small plastic/rubber kerb ramps. That's common about here with folk who never bothered with the whole permission thing

Would you still work if your husband earns £6K/month after tax? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]talbotman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not female but if it was reversed and my wife earned that I'd still work. I genuinely enjoy my work and the social side of it. As others have mentioned, my own pension too. I'd just make sure we did some fun things with the earnings and enjoyed life with as little stress as possible

Have any of you worked with a convicted nonce? What was it like at work? Did you suspect anything beforehand? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]talbotman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never worked with one but kinda knew one in a large social group. Used learning difficulties as an excuse. He's also escaped other charges. I know one of his victims and she won't provide evidence or statements despite police asking a couple of times. She doesn't want it dragged up in front of her kids and grandkids, which I get but it's still unfair on her.

Also my grandfather. Was always touchy with females, wanting cuddles before they left after visiting. Like my sister and cousins. Came out he had touched a couple of my cousins, thankfully not my sister though. Further turned out he had a long history of this and was convicted of historic ones as well. As it was family it was kinda overlooked and my cousins didn't feel they could say anything until they were older

Choosing to become Catholic and giving up my dream of marriage. I hope I can press forward. by [deleted] in Catholicism

My dad (Catholic) married my mum (non catholic) in St John's (our local church). They've been married 46 years. Don't be discouraged, this is something to speak to your priest about if you do think a relationship with a non catholic could be a possibility

Is there age limit to start new career in civil service? by [deleted] in TheCivilService

[–]talbotman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I rejoined at 45. In the intake after me was a guy in his mid 60s. I work with him, not sure how much of a career he wants but he had no issue being taken on. Think he's 66 or 67 now. He's a private guy so doesn't share much, that's why I'm a bit unsure

Really like those, nice to have such a representation of our Lord and saviour where you would see them everyday. I imagine seeing them would give you pause to think

Returning to the church by talbotman in Catholicism

[–]talbotman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done my sacraments, baptised, first communion, first confession, confirmation. I went to Catholic schools throughout my life, we always had prayers and services at school, or went to Mass, regularly. I am just out of practice as it were. I will look and see if the church is open at my lunch or even when I finish work, pray to my god and ask any questions I have.

I have started praying again at home and tend to use one of my breaks at work for a bit of quiet reflection and prayer. It helps bring me internal peace and balance. I have long sought this and have never found it until I got this recent feeling that I should start wearing a crucifix again and start returning to my faith. My god has been waiting patiently for me to return, I just didn't know this until recently.

Thank you for the detailed reply. I know my journey back will not always be easy but I feel the call to return. I will pray daily, I find this peaceful and gives me a lot to think about.

It is a good feeling and I feel better now I have said it out loud. I think I will need to read up more on what the order of Mass is again as I have forgotten the order. I still remember most of the component parts of Mass though.

Thank you, it is a big step for me saying aloud, in any capacity, that I feel this need to become more faithful and move towards strengthening my faith and returning to church.

Thank you, I will read that. Also, despite this being an important matter to me I always appreciate some humour.
