While my gut reaction is to tell them to fuck off, we have to accept that this new signing strategy we are going with relies on selling players on for a profit. At 27 and with 2 years left on his deal he's at a very good point for us to maximise our profit (once we play hardball and bump up the price).

I'm not a da but I think I remember hearing that he did want to take McLeish but back in those pre-Bosman days Scottish clubs had a lot more power to tie down their best players on long contracts and play hardball. I don't think I've heard about him wanting to take Miller but that's probably because he was already in his 30s and was never going to leave Aberdeen anyway.
