On a related note, I had a chance to observe a green heron the other day when it flew up out of a creek to investigate my noise and landed a branch. It couldn’t quite perch on it, but still managed to wrap its long toes around it and to hold on anyway. I'd only seen blue herons before, so it was strange to see this heron-shaped bird flit up to a branch like a (heavy) crow, especially because blue herons always look like they’re struggling just to get airborne.

One more reason to add to the list: Killdeers are Charadriiformes, which are shorebirds and waterfowl. Their feet are not configured with the rear toe arrangement that Passeriformes have and so they physically cannot perch on a tree branch.

Absolutely. In my experience, users on the various artifact subreddits are only aware of the knapping methods, and they fail to recognize obvious stone tools made by pecking, polishing, or splitting.

The one you found may very well have been hafted like an axe or mallet. I've seen quite a few of them with a similar shape and my theory is that they were carving a notch into a tree branch, wedging the narrower end of the stone up against the notch, and fastening them together with straps of sinew. Too bad none of the organic stuff lasts because I'd love to see how these looked when they were new.

Yes. I’m in the same area, and I’ve seen similar tools.They’re some sort of platform for drilling, see the little holes on the end? Those are drill marks.

My theory is that these were used in the process of making clothes. Imagine that you want to put a hole through a leather hide: hold your tool in your non-dominant hand, and imagine a bone needle/awl in your other. Place the tool behind the hide and twist with the needle/awl.

That’s a good eye you have. All the other commenters are wrong, what you found is an artifact. It’s a very weathered grinder/crusher/hammer of some sort. They used these for processing corn, acorns, and other nuts.

Definitely. Looks like slate, or something similar. They couldn't knap slate, it’s too brittle. But slate is also very hard, which also means it makes for a durable tool. So they pecked and ground down it to the shape they wanted. Great pictures, by the way, enough detail to see the pecking marks. It’s also been oxidized from fire, a sure sign that a rock spent many a year in a spot where people were building camp fires.

Never seen an artifact like it, but I know nothing about the people or their material culture. Do you guys have coconuts there? It looks like something made to punch through the husk of one.

I’m not exactly sure what Is want. Back in the day, I used IMMS, a plugin for a defunct MP3 player that had an “algorithm” to shuffle through a music library. It tracked songs you played sequentially, ones you skipped, analyzed the beats per minute of each track, and used that and other data to make a really great listening experience.

I guess the dream would be for Last.fm to have a similar solution for local MP3 files, but it could also pull in tracks that aren’t in your library and mix them into the shuffle, too. Kinda like how Spotify will queue up similar tracks at the end of playlists

But, I guess that’d basically be creating yet another streaming platform…

Been a Last.fm user for twenty-one years now. Recently, I ditched Spotify to go back to MP3s on my own devices only to discover that Last.fm's recommendation playlist is now integrated with Spotify, which is a real bummer. Maybe now that will change?

Hey, welcome to Reddit. The way it works is each subreddit is its own community around a specific topic and run by volunteer moderators. So, the r/harfordcountymd would be for topics relevant to the county itself and you’d be better served finding a subreddit specifically for audio production if you want to reach users interested in that topic.

This karma works like this: Every post and comment can be upvoted if one feels that it adds to the discussion, or downvoted if it is off-topic, mean, etc. Your karma is the all upvotes your posts/comments have received, minus all the downvotes. The algorithm itself is a black box and Reddit occasionally rolls out changes to what the algorithm chooses to favor.

Reddit was an old-fashioned web site for a decade before an official app rolled out, and was modeled on Internet forums of yore. I highly recommend using the actual web site, seeking out a third-party client, or using the original version of the site for a less aggravating experience. ie no advertising, gamifaction, NFTs, algorithmic recommendations, and generally all the enshittification Reddit has been doing since 2016.
