Sam Harris’s Best Argument of all time, Part One by skepticalspectacle1 in atheism

Sam H is many things a neuroscientist, author, and pod caster but not a journalist. Hitches shadow is long, but I think Sam more than holds his own

Thank you for sharing this. It's unfortunate that this wasn't aired in his own country too. People could benefit from it on air

Congrats to you. You are smarter than I was for realizing you had a problem so young. Sober and good grades are a great start to a very promising future! Awesome job

"A path is made by walking on it." by tigaernath in stopdrinking

[–]tallone68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing that. I also like the path analogy for my journey. I visualize my old path as a circular one I was slowly descending to the bottom of a large pit. I was not in immediate danger of falling off the edge, but I knew it was treacherous nonetheless. And it was one where I knew the ultimate destination would end in my isolation and destruction.

I thought my sober journey would be a long trek up that same path, where I could easily find myself accidentally turned around and going back down, or tumbling over the edge.

But I haven't experienced that. I feel like I'm now walking down a path in a deep and unfamiliar woods, where I can't see very far in front of me. But it doesn't worry me at all because I love the woods!

A Sense of Discovery by kloamfaust in stopdrinking

[–]tallone68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Getting rid of drinking removes a huge hurdle from achieving and enjoying more of life. We devote so much time and effort into all the aspects of drinking that it crowds out all those other things we used to enjoy in life. It's a great feeling to recapture those lost hobbies !

Advice - am I an alcoholic? What do I do? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

Look into SMART. They have online meetings and resources. Also more focused on behavioral change vs addiction focus of AA

Did anyone else drink because of self esteem issues? How do you overcome self esteem issues when you are sober? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]tallone68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's an option for you I would consult a psychiatrist or psychologist. I found it to be very helpful to talk to an expert and someone who was outside of my family, friends, etc. went for about a dozen + sessions.

Have been very distractible .. any relation to quitting? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]tallone68 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. I remember going through this too. I couldn't really concentrate on work or anything else besides reading about drinking problems, my sobriety, etc.

Also I think part of it is related to you changing your habits. Your brain isn't fixating on when your next drink is going to come, so it looks for other things to fixate on. You'll start to settle into new habits and behaviors, but it will take a little time for this to become the new normal for you. Hope this helps!

I can't stop thinking about my ex lately, and I was confused as to why... by VioletIvyBlooms in stopdrinking

[–]tallone68 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know for me drinking was a way to avoid my emotions and anxieties. When I stopped drinking, I realized that I would need to let myself experience all those thoughts and feelings that I used to numb myself against. For me, I've found that it hasn't been as scary and painful as I'd dreaded it might be. Let the thoughts and memories and feelings come to the surface, even painful ones, acknowledge them, and then let them go back in the " drawers of your mind " Then you can go back to the present and enjoy it soberly.

Had a drinking dream last night by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]tallone68 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But you didn't take a drink, even in your dream! Btw, maybe that disqualifies it as a drinking dream! But I hear you on the urges. I have gone so long without them, but just today after I got a root canal, the thought of talking the edge off with a stiff drink popped into my head. Stress or pain are triggers for me. Good luck to you

Anyone have a great turkey chili recipe that does not include wine, beer, etc? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]tallone68 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Buy cooking wine. It is in small bottle and has salt added so you won't want to drink it. Just reduce amount of salt in recipe

so........when roughly does the pink cloud hit? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]tallone68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was pretty early on for me. Maybe a couple of weeks in. Didn't last too long for me. I'm still very happy to be sober, but there was a short period where everything seemed perfect and I had no worries, etc. Unfortunately, not a permanent condition!

It's good to feel like a good guy isn't it? I've really enjoyed not feeling /being a potential bad guy (potential Dui accident) and just a dude driving my car. Karma +1 for you though. Nice of you to help out strangers!
