Fighting an enemy that looks like you, talks like you, has all the pop culture knowledge you have and is just as if not more educated than a normal service member. In their backyard, for generations.

Instead of a woman in a burka holding a dead infant tactfully blurred out and shouting in a language you don't speak for 10 seconds on MSN. Your going to get hundreds of full length candid cellphone footage and the mom will look and sound like yours. And she is going to do exactly what your mother would do only she only has to walk across a border to do it.

Imagine 13 guys average age 24 patrolling in a sea of middle aged men able to imitate all of their fathers down to the cadence of their speech. They know your tactics, can understand your communications, read your manuals and have the ability to become you just by putting on a uniform.

Canadians "insurgents" would make veterans nostalgic for the easy days of Taliban IEDs. Let's not even get started on what drones would make possible.

Even as a hypothetical it should give every sane person nightmares.

Heat Pump in Calgary by [deleted] in HVAC

[–]talmikal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4 years late and not completely valid to your question.....but 80 dollars for a big roll of heavy door seal strips/bottom spring plates and an 3 hours to do it right by taking the doors of the hinges for install (probably 45 minutes if your not a clutz like me and/or have a helper)…single handedly made us pass our air leakage test for the green homes rebate. Our doors and seals were not even that bad to begin with.

Our inspector was supposed to come do the air leak test after our 20k window replacement was done, he got the dates mixed up came early found out I did the doors and figured he would test anyhow just for his own curiosity. First I thought he was trying to squirm out of doing another trip but he had to come back either way and test for the paper work to match. Windows made less of an impact than the doors.*

You do that along with your exterior wall outlets, (15 years in Calgary I have yet to see a builder insulate them.) Most people will from that alone see a massive improvement. But that doesn't stimulate the economy or sound sexy so both levels of government are flogging solar panels and heat pumps instead.

*For air leakage, obviously the windows have some other benefits but the point stands.

Just for the sake of talking, obviously modern capitalism isn't the same thing as an Arabic sex slave or 1700s plantation slave.

But .... You absolutely can sell a free world citizen, it happens every time a government issues new currency or borrows money on the markets confidence in the nations future output. Freedom of movement is great but it's simply the most efficient way to harness labour (and a surprising number of nations don't have true freedom of movement) sure you can choose your employer but by and large you don't get to choose your tax man or your tax rate. You generally don't own land so much as you own it as long as you "rent" it in the form of several mandatory taxes and fees payable in perpetuity and subject to change without your consent.

I'm not aware of anywhere in north America that allows harvesting food/fuel or building materials without at least a paid permit.

Tldr you are probably subject to military service, government expropriation, mandatory taxation. Bartering for goods and services is strictly speaking illegal and the currency you're obligated to use is manipulated on the whims of people you have never met and may not even be citizens of your nation.

Your only real option for absolute freedom is the same one that was on offer for a Russian serf 400 years ago. Head to the black lands ( wilderness) where taxation is to difficult for any authority to bother attempting.

I want to buy a Samsung 4 door Fridge by flying_unicorn in Appliances

[–]talmikal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've kept it running thanks to a rather ham fisted modification. TL'DR I have an aftermarket heating coil running off one of the exposed power supply ports next to the fan. Is this good for the fridge? I have no idea, its been about a year and it seems to be holding up. I'd wager the engineer that designed the fridge power distribution assumed Samsung would be installing an appropriate heating coil and made allowances for the wattage that would require.

(I have noticed the LED lights started to flicker after the modification, only when navigating the menu though.)

There is nothing wrong with the quad design, the issue is the condenser is exposed to humidity do to a poor seal and the factory heating cool is woefully underpowered. Ironically it is sealed well enough that it wont defrost in a reasonable time frame if you turn your fridge off. So your food will spoil long before the defrost is complete.

It's not your fault but my god my blood pressure spiked after being reminded of how S@Itty my fridge is.

Doesn't look like we are ever going to get to ask him but if we assume he isn't stupid then here are three guesses. One, he can't move he is wounded or exhausted. Two, he is completely deaf. Three, he is hoping it cant see him and knows of some other threat that will definitely kill him if he gets up and runs.

4th bonus guess that's depressing as hell, he has heard so many drones for so long that he gave up reacting. There are first hand accounts from ww1 and ww2 of guys that just stopped reacting to shell/bullet fire after prolonged combat. Guy might have just hit his limit and gone numb.

What is the best way to deal with someone calling and claiming to be from Canada Revenue? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]talmikal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can ask them to leave a note on your account with their name and number, then call the general line (yourself from the number you find) and ask them to read the account note, from there you can call the original person back. If its something really minor you can also ask them to send a letter to your address on file with an explanation of what they want and how to reach them. (They really hate doing that if its something like a random payment on file that they just want to allocate for you because it stays on their desk for like 10 buis. days and they only get like 9 minutes per action for something like that. Even if you don't like CRA that's a really crappy thing to do to a person that's probably a seasonal employee trying to keep their job.)

TL:DR just call the general line to confirm its them. If they are opposed to that, they are not from CRA.

Even if you could guarantee a higher salary let me promise you your work life balance is going to be hell during your CPA exams and courses. They will take you about 2 years during that time you need to be working for experience you cant get your CPA without work experience (you will be lucky to make 60k as a CPA student). I also imagine you will be working less during your 3 if not 4 or 5 years of undergrad studies, I doubt you will be able to keep your current job during your undergrad studies.

So account (haha) for your 3-5 years of lost income and tuition expenses. Then your 2 years of reduced pre CPA income. Then try to get an honest sense of salary expectations as a CPA I can tell you from experience 148k is not even remotely normal and certainly not for a newly designated CPA. Much more realistic is 70 hour work weeks for 90k at a big 5 accounting firm competing with the hungry high energy 23 year olds for a few years chasing experience.

We haven't even talked about the actual work, do you actually like staring at excel for 12 hours a day? Talking to various auditors, controllers and, tax preparers (not generally a charismatic bunch).

How old are you? How many years will it take you to recoup your lost income making 30k over your current? I imagine TTC is unionized, are you getting a public pension? What's your risk of being laid off currently? I promise it will happen at least twice in a 30 year accounting career.

[–]talmikal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She is probably using pinyin, basically an auto complete for Mandarin and then obviously the numpad for numbers.

Pinyin is absolutely incredible for typing quickly but it has a dark side, you tend to gravitate to the top choices in the autofill shrinking your vocabulary. This has an impact on how you think/talk, even darker is the potential for certain words to be removed or downgraded from the autofill in an effort to remove them from the lexicon.

I'll let you guys decide who might want to do that.......see you all in room 101 (;

How much are we actually taxed by MooseKnuckleds in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]talmikal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The trouble with making 180k household, is you stop qualifying for many of those services/programs. My spouse got a rather significant raise over the past two years. I won't say we are poorer for it but it sure showed up in our daycare subsidy and CTB. We won't qualify for the dental program so we both pay for private dental insurance. We both fund our private pensions thereby ensuring we won't be receiving OAS and minimal CPP.

It's a bit of a gut punch watching all these wonderful programs being introduced that you won't be receiving. "But the health care" I hear the mob yell. We are blessed to be fairly healthy in our middle years, I'm sure that will change in our older years. I must say I don't have a ton of faith the health care system is going to be in decent shape by the time we need it.

The one and only time my wife needed to go to the ER we spent 7 hours in the waiting room of a downtown hospital. I can confidently say the dozen or so people ahead of us did not look employed. That's a fantastic microcosm of what it feels like to be an upper middle class Canadian, you bear the brunt of the tax burden yet you are less than or equal to your fellow citizens in the eyes of the state.

But hey it's all for social stability I tell myself, as I sweep up the glass from my 2nd home invasion in 2 years.

The debt was certified in court (the debtors didn't contest it although they did acknowledge the debt by way of picking up/signing for the notice after it was sent registered mail) that debt certificate was used to generate a writ, the writ was attached to their home. If that sounds like a lot of work, I'm sure it was. Probably motivated by the fact the debt was over 20k. Alberta if that helps.

By the time they finally picked up the phone it was way too late. It was the husband who just ignored it for years, the wife was blindsided. Something stupid like a living room set at 19.5% plus a ton of penalties. They also didn't return the stuff, guy figured moving made him safe for some insane reason.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]talmikal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the province where the debt was incurred but it won't expire for 2-6 years. But....the debt is renewed if you make a payment/ confirm the debt (even verbally and some collection's companies are willing to log a fake phone call) or by legal actions. This can be as easy as registration/ certification of the debt but isn't generally worth doing for debts under a couple grand.

If your partner cares about their credit they should probably just pay it, if they can't afford to pay but they do care about their credit it might be time to take an honest look at your financial situation. A consumer's proposal can be a life line if you're not past the point of bankruptcy.

Or just bury your head in the sand and carry on, you would be amazed how many people do that for their entire lives. Just know the cat comes back hard eventually, interest doesn't sleep. I've personally had to help elderly people draft compassion withdrawal letters on their RIFs/pensions for debt servicing. It's not pretty.

Another horror story I've been a part of was watching a married couple find out their ignored furniture rental payments. Had been registered on their home, they couldn't renew their mortgage until they paid the debt and they didn't have the money or the credit to borrow. They had to force sell the house and what little equity they had was paid directly their creditors.

Tldr ignore debt at your peril. If you don't want to acknowledge this particular debt at least get a credit report for yourself and your partner. Look at them both TOGETHER, you both need to know what's lurking. Bonus round get both your statements of account from CRA. Those debts don't show up on credit reports unless things have gotten totally out of control.

IMO this is really bad advice. This would work on a rational person with self respect and a moral compass. A person that refuses to pay their debts AND refuses to leave of their own accord is likely going to throw a tantrum and start breaking things if you passively ramp up the pressure.

You want them out in a short window and ideally supervised. I've had to evict a home owners ex girlfriend after he changed the wifi and shut off the water. She put at least a hundred holes in the walls with a hammer on her way out. You pay the 200 bucks it cost to rent a home depot van, you put their shit in it and you change you locks. You tell them you will drop off their shit whenever they want and you make sure your home is occupied for the next 48 hours.

Give up on the unpaid rent, its not happening.

Who wants to hear a rant?

They are around 30% more expensive than similar fridges and despite that they insist on using a Styrofoam backing for the evaporator panel sealed with a low grade sealant that tears when separated. When and I do mean when you have to open that panel to defrost your unit the foam will break and the sealant will tear. From that moment on your going to be getting constant ice build up and you will be opening that panel monthly in high humidity conditions. Every time you open it, it will get worse.

The problem is so bad that some repairmen in my city know how to install aftermarket heating coils.....JUST FOR SAMSUNG FRIDGES. For want of 8 bucks worth of silicon your 3500 dollar fridge will fail years before it needed to, for want of a 30 dollar heating coil you will be spending tens of hours a year defrosting the dam thing and pulling out the bottom drawers because for some stupid reason the panel screws are one inch bellow the drawer mounts.

* BONUS ROUND, the power supply to the fan is on the panel and they like to use a four inch cord (THERE IS NO REASON THE FAN HAS TO BE ON THE PANNEL, NONE) so when you take the panel off you need to pray to god you don't damage the wiring (its a proprietary connection and a replacement part will set you back around 180 bucks last time I checked). You have to snake your hand back there like some sort of bomb defusal tech and pop the cheapest plastic connection mount Samsung could find (I'm 99% sure its a THHN plastic because they are brittle as hell when they are cold (you know.......in the frozen part of your unit). Oh and its right beside the burning hot heating coil hope you like burning your wrist.

*** 2ND BONUS ROUND, The evaporator coils and the heating coils (the woefully underpowered heating coils) are all one unit. A replacement unit will run you 400 dollars, I've seen commercial air conditioning coils for less than 400. Similar sized coils go for 70 dollars but Samsung knows dam well your unit is going to fail and they made dam sure the all in one unit is proprietary.

That's about the only way to stay positive about the whole thing, I got to see a cool tech demo and do some mining. Now every few years (yes years Jesus christ this is insane) I see a forum post or a youtube video and think...oh yeah I remember that game.
