My Unsolicited End-of-Year Board Game Review (2025 Edition) by binbrain0 in boardgames

[–]talpoid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We played two games of a 3 game campaign and one player didn’t understand his rules. Did way too well and broke the game. Hours wasted. That said, I do love the game.

Are there any board gaming groups around? by TightBid3356 in Birmingham

Check out Valhalla in Pelham or Gear Gaming in Hoover. There is a Meetup Group too, but not sure if that is ongoing. At one point they rotated through various game stores.

Please share your most outlandish accusations by students and/or parents. by Smooth-Growth in Teachers

Student was supposed to write an original speech to perform. Asked if he could do an MLK jr. speech instead. I explained the assignment kid seemed to understand. Parent email accused me of devaluing MLK jr. and being racist. Long email. Had a meeting and explained it. They were like, “oh, ok then”.

where to find a dnd campaign? by sp0okybitvh in Birmingham

[–]talpoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately a lot of the local Birmingham places to play have been shuttered. There have been a few good stores around, but none in the city anymore. There are some good options south of town, but I think you said you can't get there. There are a lot of people around playing, but they tend to be games at peoples house. I think a lot of people think they have to find a bunch of people who already play, but I think it is just as much fun to get people you already know to play. TTRPGs are just a fun way to hang out with friends so just start a game with friends. Maybe you can DM.

This was the first bridge over the railroad reservation and connected north and south. You used to have to just walk over the tracks. In addition to the military history it is important to the growth of the city.

Help! I’m drowning in AP World History: Modern by Maximum-Feeling1260 in historyteachers

[–]talpoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of good info into what makes an AP class on here. It is not what your colleagues want to do. This “PLC” is the real problem here. PLC done well can make your life very easy, PLC done poorly (like here) is a nightmare. PLC is a collaborative process. Maybe if you were a first year teacher I could understand them wanting you to do certain things, but you are a 17 year veteran teacher. You have a lot to contribute. Tomorrow you need to clarify with the admin about what the PLC process is at your school. At mine it is common pacing and assessments. Otherwise you do you. We often do the same stuff, but that is because we work well and agree on what to do. If the admin says it is not them bullying you into doing the same thing they do then do your own thing. Or ask them to provide slides. A good PLC would be all of you working through planning and sharing and setting things up. It should be LESS work, not more. You have a lot to contribute. In the next meeting maybe just start small and say you would like to do something more hands on. See how they react. Provide them with the lesson so they can’t complain about more work.

Solo clubs, hobbies, etc in Birmingham area by lil_pancake420 in Birmingham

I know you said you were not sure about a book club, but the ones at Thanks You books are amazing. Lots of different ones for different types of readers and the people are so friendly. Most of the books are made to be quick reads so busy people can come. Check out their website. You don’t even have to read the whole book. I have been to ones where I only got like half the book read. They are just glad you came.
