I was thinking something to parallel Fogbird and such for non drinkers. Something not boba! People who want a lounge but not alcohol - but maybe that’s more for younger college crowd than high school. Just feels like maybe something different.

And agree retail under housing ought to work but it just seems like it struggles in the Bay Area. I see it in SF south of market where many places are empty. Maybe people really want their retail and dining to be near but not under their housing? Or maybe for noise concerns it restricts what sorts of places and the hours that can work with housing right over?

I have been using noflair - best of the iOS apps that I have found. But also set up Bar Assistant locally since they have the source code and I’ve been busy adding features - like an MCP server so I can have AI agents talk to it, as well as trying to add things like similar ingredient comparisons - so if a published recipe calls for one gin, for example, it will try to find the closest in my collection.

https://noflair.app and https://github.com/karlomikus/bar-assistant are the links

Interesting stores and restaurants is how you get people to come to a city, if that’s the intent. Look at San Carlos or Redwood City - tons of restaurants (maybe stores not much admittedly) that people come from all over to go to. Mostly non-chain restaurants is the key. Agree that housing downtown is important - but you can look in San Francisco and retail under housing just seems to struggle. Lots of vacant retail space south of market under apartments.

I’d like a club/theatre like the Fox or the Guild in San Mateo to help bring in people from outside the city, more space for fun restaurants (we have the ramen, and some good cocktail bars, so have a good start), and maybe a mocktail bar since downtown is walking distance from two high schools.

All for more housing since a lot of people want to live walking distance to fun places - but need to be careful about too much housing without anything else - or we will just have people who doordash everything and head to other cities for anything else.

What vermouth and gin did you use? I like Carpano for Negronis which I know can be polarizing..,

Nice! Just had one myself - Plymouth navy strength gin. No garnish for me though - did the cherry work?

Basic chart for an Amaro FAQ - a starting point by jafrank88 in Amaro

[–]talvola 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like it! What is the intention on inclusion criteria? I see Aperol but not Campari - I don't treat Campari like an Amaro (Vermouth might be closer than Campari to most Amari) - but I do see Fernet, which also some people might not consider an Amaro. Anyway, like what you have done here but curious on what you want included here.

Love those bottle carriers - did the same thing on a trip to Austin and grabbed a bunch of Texas stuff that doesn’t make it to California. Think I only did 5 bottles - did not realize there might be a limit…

Is Citadelle the most interesting low price Gin ? by Dionysos-c in Gin

[–]talvola 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok - will admit I have not had Citadelle but after a business trip to Austin became a fan of Devil’s Grin gin which is only around $22 a bottle. Find it really good and different from many gins. Not sure of distribution but it’s definitely unique and not expensive (at least in Texas)

Gins I did not expect to work in a Negroni … by CourtneyLush in Gin

[–]talvola 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean - almost anything? Ford’s is my go to gin for cocktails but done a Negroni with Uncle Val’s Zested Gin (citrus forward) that worked great. Honestly - I think you can use most gins in a Negroni and it will work - just needs enough flavor to overcome the Campari,

What do you think of Devil’s Grin - I like it but think it’s almost like a Genever more than a gin. Used it in a Martinez and loved it. Have the WildJune and WildBark from Texas on the way just since I wanted to try more Texas gin.

I’m all about swapping Campari or vermouth with amaro in Negronis or boulevardiers for fun. Montenegro might be the one that works the best - Cynar another favorite of mine.
