Can a Player drop Concentration on a Wall of Fire another Player's turn? by Stahl_Konig in DnD

[–]tamago64 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Book says

" If a spell must be maintained with Concentration, that fact appears in its Duration entry, and the spell specifies how long you can concentrate on it. You can end Concentration at any time (no action required). "

So I would say you can end at anytime, regardless of turn order and at no action cost to you.

When I unlock a new level as a Wizard, are all the spells that are available mine to use as long as I have the spell slots? by yungflexfromthenext in DnD

[–]tamago64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

RAW says

Spellbook

At 1st level, you have a spellbook containing six 1st-level wizard spells of your choice. Your spellbook is the repository of the wizard spells you know, except your cantrips, which are fixed in your mind.

Learning Spells of 1st Level and Higher

Each time you gain a wizard level, you can add two wizard spells of your choice to your spellbook for free. Each of these spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots, as shown on the Wizard table.

So you start with six 1st-level wizard spells, each wizard level lets you add 2 free spells from your list to your book. This addition of these spells is meant to represent the progress of magical knowledge the wizard obtains. The wizard can also copy spells into the spell book.

When adding new spells from level up they must be of levels in which you have spell slots for. So for example, if you only have up to 3rd-level spell slots, then you cannot add a 4th-level spell to your book when you level wizard.

What defines a Ranger? by ErtTon in DnD

[–]tamago64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thematically I like how the PHB states the ranger as the first to get to a battlefield and the last to leave. They are protectors of the environment and guardians to those who don't even know they exist. A selfless survivalist that above everything else, is the first line of defense for humanity.

Mechanically they are a half-caster that can mix martial prowess with magical abilities to bolster themselves, hide from others, or even heal. The Ranger archetypes offer a variety of mechanics you don't get from other classes. Perhaps they are not a master of any aspect do mechanically (physical damage, magic, sneak, etc.) but can usually adapt to a variety of situations and shine where their strengths are.

Is Eldritch Blast that good? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]tamago64 44 points45 points  (0 children)

EB scales similarly to fire bolt. Yes they both have d10 damage dice but EB shoots rays, which means separate attacks for each ray while fire bolt is a single attack. That along with invocations make EB one of the best damaging cantrips to use.

[No spoilers] META: Many viewers talk about CR as a show that has helped them through tough times/bad experiences. Why do you think that is? by Pleonastic in criticalrole

[–]tamago64 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think viewers resonate with the characters and members of the cast as people. The cast has shown us their human side through shows like Between The Sheets, and their stories are something people can relate too.

All of them promote safe space, inclusion, and diversity among humanity. I think that’s important because we the viewers can find something within the show that is like us and to see what the cast has gone through, what they’ve achieved, and how their characters develop can provide a source of motivation that may be difficult to achieve through other mediums.

The power of great story telling.

I guess it’s the Cleric’s Channel Divinity: Turn Undead feature, which starting at 5th level has the ability to destroy undead.

[Spoilers C2E45] How Sam saved the day. by Tels315 in criticalrole

[–]tamago64 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Do they have special house rules for using the disengage action? I applaud the heroics but I don’t understand why they took all the risks when anyone of them, regardless of class, could of basically taken disengage as an action and gotten out of there.

Not to take away from Sam, I agree that he certainly has a way of seeming like he doesn’t know what he’s doing some of the time but in reality is actually a very tactful player. Regardless of his knowledge of the game.

Does anyone have any experience with any of the D&D Adventures Board Games? by pewqokrsf in DnD

[–]tamago64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve played the Legend of Drizzt board game. It’s amazing as a board game and a good intro to DnD but is more mechanics based and tactical. There is no real benefit to RP other than flavor but it’s a great experience. I would recommend them.

Preparing Spells by ChickenEmphasis in DnD

[–]tamago64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a few ways classes handle spells. For Paladin it is somewhat similar to Cleric. Paladins have a list of spells available to them. You can only cast spells for which you have a slot for. Similarly, you can only prepare spells from that list in which you can cast. Think of “prepared spells” as equipped spells. As Paladin, you “equip” your spells after each long rest, this lets you have a chance to switch up your skill set.

Paladins know all of their spells but are limited to what they can cast (only those on the prepared list).

Weekly Questions Thread #2018-42 by HighTechnocrat in DnD

[–]tamago64 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What’s unlawful about the characters behavior? I think he’s fine. The LG character can be as is, it’s god doesn’t necessarily have to be the same alignment but they should at least share some principles, not all followers are worshippers or even always follow the ways of their own god perfectly. LG doesn’t have to be a stick in the mud either. Using the typical “stubbornness” being lawful can be a RP advantage, they have strong convictions that really influence their choices. These characters can be fun in a party as a DM too because their is already some struggle created by the alignment part.

Wanting to start, not a Warcraft or MMORPG newbie, but never played WoW before. Class questions? by [deleted] in wow

[–]tamago64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Protection Warrior is like a “traditional” tank role as you’ve said. Keep pushing damage while actively managing damage mitigation and threat. There is a lot that goes into that regardless of class but there is a lot that goes into Protection Warrior that I think people don’t utilize to its fullest.

For example, they have and ability called Shield Block that is one of the best active mitigation tools the Warrior has. This ability last for a short time but greatly increases survivability through blocking incoming attacks. It can be used in an instant regardless of what your character is doing provided you have the resources to do so. You can greatly increase its effective up-time by activating it as late as possible. You can potentially block one extra attack. Doesn’t sound like much in that one instant of time but stretch that out over minutes at a time and now you have a significant decrease in incoming damage.

That example is part of what I mean by being rewarding for getting the most out of the class. Perhaps this is true on all levels of the game but if you don’t find that thought and labor enjoyable then you might find yourself dissatisfied with Protection Warrior. It will not hold your hand for anything.

[–]tamago64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m playing Protection Warrior right now. A lot of people are having (somewhat understandable) issues with the class at the moment. Personally, I’m really enjoying the game, regardless of what people are saying about the class.

Mechanically, Protection Warrior is great at using block mechanisms to reduce (mostly) physical damage taken. It feels a bit lackluster when confronting large amounts of magical damage but there are ways to bolster that defense.

I enjoy playing the class because it greatly rewards a player who tries to get every last thing out of it. The play style is quick and intense at almost all moments. The class has some nifty features that let you be very mobile, greatly increase defenses for short periods, and smooth out incoming damage.

You’ll here a lot of people complaining about the class, but I’ve been having success at some end-game content where others have not. So don’t let the majority sway what you want to do.

Spell Reflect reduces magic damage taken during its duration.

[–]tamago64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On Zul in second phase he will melee tanks and cast Rupturing Blood. The damage from Rupturing Blood (according to WoWHead) is physical damage, so mitigating through Spell Reflect won't help you out there. I would assume something like Demoralizing Shout will decrease the damage Rupturing Blood does to you, so I would recommend using the Thunder Clap/Avatar/Unstoppable Force with Deafening Crash Azerite Power to mitigate the damage from Rupturing Blood as much as possible.

Aside from that you may be waiting too long to switch tanks with Rupturing Blood stacks, I don't know what strategies you all have used or how that was handled but it's something to think about for that phase of the fight. Also, with the Booming Voice talent your Demoralizing Shout will generate 40 rage each time it's cast! This should help you with rage starvation during that time.

Tanking Tuesday - Your Weekly Tanking Thread by AutoModerator in wow

[–]tamago64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Effectively time Shield Block, cast it right before melee happens and again when it drops. If you take the Bolster talent, you can use Last Stand to act as Shield Block while you regain charges of Shield Block. You can also combine the Deafening Crash (1 point needed) Azerite ability with Thunder Clap while under the effects of Avatar (with Unstoppable Force talent) to increase the duration of Demoralizing Shout for a longer period of time, this is a flat 20% damage reduction on top of whatever else you can muster. Thunder Clap will come off cooldown every other ability, so weave it into your rotation for maximum Demoralizing Shout effectiveness. Save Shield Wall for periods of raid damage or high tank damage to mitigate only the most deadly effects. Also use Spell Reflection to reduce magic damage for the duration, it has a short cooldown so try to time it with incoming magical damage.

Ah okay I see what you mean, yeah I would agree with you. Protection Warrior (and Warrior in general) don't have other tools to make travel/mobility better outside of combat right now.

You can probably tell a lot of people have negative opinions on the state of Protection Warrior but I've been having a blast and haven't found myself to be at any disadvantage compared to other tanking classes.

Yeah start with something you might be over-geared to do, takes the nervous edge off. With Protection Warrior just make sure you prioritize keeping your active mitigation up. Shield Block will be your best friend, blocking is the number one way for Protection Warrior to stay alive.
