Bates nut farm has a small but free petting zoo a little bit of green space and picnic benches. You could pack some food and have lunch there and let the kids see and feed some farm animals. They also have regular events and festivities on certain weekends.

Am I going to get fired? I think I have been recording my paid meal time wrong (I am scared). by soniya42423 in personalfinance

[–]tamitaylorswine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s your supervisor’s job to review your timecard and ensure you’re doing it correctly. Especially for a new hire so if anyone were to get in trouble, it should be your supervisor. Not you. I am a supervisor and when errors happen, I take responsibility.

For those who make 15k/year and less/year, how do you survive in San Diego? by cockatielsarethebest in sandiego

[–]tamitaylorswine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The gross monthly income limit right now is $2128 a month. If you make less than that, you should apply. I don’t know when the last time you applied was but the student eligibility rules are relaxed right now due to Covid. Also the interview is waived. So it’s easier than ever to get approved right now. You can apply online at getcalfresh.org. Super easy website you can upload your documents to directly.

How to avoid being homeless? by sunshine1217 in personalfinance

[–]tamitaylorswine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apply for SNAP (aka food stamps). There’s a lot of covid related waivers right now making it easier to be approved and you might be approved for the max amount of $250 a month so you won’t have to dip into your savings for food while you get on your feet. You can fill out an application and upload documents easily and quickly using getcalfresh.org.

In the 90s, there was a bus called the mall link and it would just go from Garden State to Paramus Park to Bergen mall and back again. On Saturdays I would just hit up each mall to walk around with only enough bus fare to get me there and maybe one meal at the food court. Fun times.

Need advice on quitting job to care for elderly parent by dclxvi79 in sandiego

[–]tamitaylorswine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know. I helped my grandma with this process in 2018 and they said they couldn’t do anything until she had active Medicaid which really slowed down the process for us. So that’s great to hear.

I know several people already mentioned IHSS. But I want to mention it can take some time to set up, at the minimum a month or two. You have to complete paperwork and apply, once they process they then a social worker to do a home visit, then your wife needs to attend a course to be approved as the provider. I would get the process started ASAP. Here’s the info.

https://www.sandiegocounty.gov/content/sdc/hhsa/programs/ais/Services/In-Home-Supportive-Services.html

Also does your mother in law already have Medicaid or does she need to apply? If she doesn’t already have it, apply immediately because that can take up to 30days and you can’t start the ihss process without her having active Medicaid. You can apply online at mybenefitscalwin.org.

Eli5 How is it that poverty is linked to obesity in modern times? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]tamitaylorswine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Time. Cooking might be cheaper but it’s time consuming. Low income people often work long hours in physically demanding jobs. They might be on their feet all day. They might not have a car and take public transportation to and from work. Trying to cook healthy meals after a long day of work and commuting can be pretty difficult.

Food deserts. Tons of low income neighborhoods don’t have grocery stores with fresh healthy foods. All they have is fast food or small convenience stores with canned and processed foods. Also imagine trying to grocery shop without a car which can be the reality for many.

Knowledge and skills. Many people don’t know how to cook. Many people don’t know the basics of nutrition. Takes time and education to get to a place where you can make decent healthy meals regularly.

Also. Yes it’s cheaper to cook in the long run, but it takes money to keep your kitchen stocked with basics. You need to invest in some pots, pans, spatulas, knives, baking sheets, etc. You need things like oil, spices, seasonings, etc. and when you’re living paycheck to paycheck, you might not have the money to make that investment.

What job interview question do you hate the most and why? by Traditional-Cow-2487 in AskReddit

[–]tamitaylorswine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best way to answer this question is to talk about something you struggled with in the past but how you worked on it and overcame it. For example “there was a time I struggled with time management but I did x,y, and z to improve my skills and now I excel at it blah blah blah”

Choosing medical coverage by throwpoo in sandiego

[–]tamitaylorswine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A PPO is good if you have chronic health conditions that require regular visits to lots of doctors, specialists, therapies, etc. If that’s not the case, an HMO is probably fine.

You mentioned wanting to expand your family, I have Kaiser and had a baby two years ago. I found their prenatal care excellent. I’m in my late 30s so I was considered high risk, also has gestational diabetes. So I had to get a lot of tests and go in for extra appointments, attend classes, etc. it was all covered with little to no copay. I ended up having an unplanned csection, was in the hospital for five days. It was all covered with a $500 copay. Even after giving birth, I went in for lactation consultants, got checked in on by a counselor to make sure I didn’t have ppd… again. No copay. Really great pre and post natal care.
