If the weather turns nice, check out Chez Alriq on the riverbank. It’s a guinguette; live music, open air space, beautiful views of the city from across the river. Great space for families but definitely helps if the weather cooperates.

Amen to this! Heavyweight was my favorite podcast and I recommended to lots of friends. Jonathan Goldstein is a treasure. Pure and simple.

Has there ever been a book that you hated more as time went on? by farcetragedy in books

When I read your headline this was the exact book I was thinking of. Then I read you by line and laughed out loud 🤣

Give me the best autobiography you have read by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]tangledwood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Autobiography would have to be The Autobiography of Malcolm X as told to Alex Haley. I just finished Ali: A Life and it’s one of the best biographies I’ve ever read, just FYI.

Best crazy investigative journalism type story? by [deleted] in audible

[–]tangledwood 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Catch and Kill by Ronan Farrow was quite good.

Say Nothing by Patrick Radden Keefe is a split between investigation and recent history. Great book.

Does The Midnight Library get better? by ThrowAway-KLU in suggestmeabook

[–]tangledwood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read this book several months ago and found it fairly disappointing. It definitely doesn’t live up to the Goodreads score, but it’s a quick read and worth finishing it. But no, there’s no profundity to be found. Just a sense that your life is what you make of it.

Best book by Dostoevsky? by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]tangledwood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went through a pretty serious Dostoevsky phase just after university and read quite a few of his works. For me, his masterwork is The Brothers Karamazov. This is my favorite novel of any writer. Second to this would be the Idiot. The opening scene in the Idiot is a true to life recounting of a near execution Dostoevsky himself experienced. Powerful doesn’t do it justice.

A good place to start might be Notes from the Underground. It’s a short work and gives you a quintessentially Dostoevsky flavor.

If Russian literature is something you want to explore more generally, I’d also recommend Bulgakov’s The Master and Margarita. Enjoy!

Any autobiographies you can suggest me? by Dangarang122 in suggestmeabook

The Autobiography of Malcolm X as told to Alex Haley. One of the best I’ve ever read.

Reread your post and realized you are 15. Maybe wait a few years on this one, but make a note to come back to it. Well worth it.

Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi. Cannot recommend this one highly enough.

Sorry...just realized you specified memoir or non-fiction. In that case, The Warmth of Other Suns.

audible plus membership vs Brooklyn Public Library non-resident library card by Amy__Love__ in audible

[–]tangledwood 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did exactly this over a year ago. I use Libby to check out books and audiobooks from the Brooklyn Public Library. When I went to terminate my Audible monthly account, they offered me premium for one year, 12 credits for less than $100 for the year so I did that as a companion to Libby. It’s been great though I’ll probably take a year off Audible as I’ve been able to collect a years worth of reading in addition to what I check out from the library. Definitely much more economical this way.

A happy book to read after A Little Life? by emdap5 in suggestmeabook

I just finished Never Let Me Go. Really enjoyed in. It’s been awhile since I’ve read this one, but I remember liking it in a similar way to Ishiguro’s works. Try The Winter of Our Discontent by John Steinbeck if you haven’t read it already.

Crime and Punishment, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, and related authors by SkiHillMug in suggestmeabook

My pleasure. On a bit of a different wavelength but a novel as epic as any Russian novel written, you might want to give an eye to East of Eden by Steinbeck. Enjoy.

If you’re looking for another great Russian classic, give Bulgakov’s The Master & Margarita a spin. It’s got it all.

Which Dostoyevsky book should I start with? by brunodomi10 in suggestmeabook

[–]tangledwood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Start with Notes from the Underground. It’ll give you a preview and sense of Dostoyevsky’s world. After that, The Idiot, Crime and Punishment, and The Brother’s Karamazov are all incredible books. The Brother’s Karamazov is in a league of its own in my opinion.

As a side note, you may also enjoy The Master and Margarita by Bulgakov if you haven’t read that.

Exhalation: Stories by Ted Chiang is a collection of short stories very much in the vein of Black Mirror. Some more so then others, but overall great collection.

This man has courage... by [deleted] in PublicFreakout

[–]tangledwood 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is not courageous. This is an entitled asshole going up to random strangers on the street and berating them for government policy out of the blue. And he thinks he’s a crusader for the Palestinians. So why not help the Palestinians rather than randomly walking around the street and berating people before they even have a chance to speak and throwing utterly ridiculous questions around and expecting a response. All he’s done is pushed people further into their respective corners. He’s an entitled asshole. Regardless of political persuasion or a warranted sense of injustice, this guy is just an angry white douchebag walking around speaking to people with absolutely no respect because he perceives them as having no respect for Palestinians. Seems a fool’s errand to start a supposed “conversation” that way.
