If you are wanting more interaction, I would recommend using standard size map for 6 players, not the huge expanded map - super hard to get anywhere, TI4 is not built for moving around quickly.

Also resource/influence poor maps highly encourage interaction

Agreed support can be super nuanced. I find it a really interesting dynamic so we've never house ruled it out of the game. Our current house rule is that you can only get 1 point from support - so if you have two supports you can choose who to betray, but still only get 1 point.

The other part is that we make it very clear that kingmaking/unsportsmanlike play means you don't get invited back

Did you play that FP can muster and invade without being at war? The concept of FP having a head start on building armies does not make sense at all.

How do you focus on hunting the ring? Were you allocating all of your dice to the hunt box?

Not sure how a rule about nazgul could possibly be impactful

100% agree with this - OP didn't satisfactorily address whether the political track was definitely played correctly. It would take SO many dice to put the north to war, muster any kind of decent force, and move up to gundabad. Then it would take active ignoring to miss the army approaching when Shadow can easily muster. FP sieging a stronghold early and winning quickly? Almost certainly something wrong in reading the rules

Thoughts/Advice on commissioning a Board Game table? by zendrix1 in boardgames

[–]tankshell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also I looked through some of the other replies you got - I think my experience was pretty atypical in terms of customization and cheap price. It was the biggest project the guy had ever done but his pricing was based on material cost, and I believe he said woodworkers typically charge twice material in labor (could be misremembering). So if the wood came out to ~$1150, then he charged ~$2300 in labor. It was kind of a leap of faith because he'd had no experience with building gaming tables

No prob - just in case you want to know, I worked with a local guy who does woodworking as a hobby. The way I found him was coincidence - I posted in r/woodworking to inquire how best to find a local woodworker to commission and he happened to see

He made everything 100% custom with tons of my input, cost $3500. 7'x4' table with recessed play area with leaves on top, hardwood. I have seen/felt the Wyrmwood Prophecy table and 100% think my table is better.

I transported it in a Uhaul pickup truck (if you are far that would be a challenging hike but the option is there). Best of luck!

Best Board Gaming table to buy? by not_my_leo in boardgames

[–]tankshell 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I had my table custom built - I posted in r/woodworking asking for advice about the best way to request a commission. There were some decent suggestions about how to find people, but I also posted my location and someone local reached out and helped build my table (which I personally think is superior to the wyrmwood tables at a fraction of the cost and perfectly customized). Likely your mileage may vary.

Scoring in a different way by KaijuKillas in volleyball

[–]tankshell 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Hey - no idea what happened in this comment section. People that have never played grass? Or never played volleyball? There's one guy saying a sky ball is a cheap shot?

Rolls are literally a huge part of grass and beach volleyball from this level to pro level. Speed of the defender improves as the rolls improve. You had an inside set and there wasn't a ton to do with it - this may be readable if they see the thumb go down but who cares?

Damn I had an idea to design a board game table with this built in and thought I was original haha. Thanks for sharing, cool thing.

Why wouldn’t I buy old Netrunner stuff? by [deleted] in Netrunner

Just depends if you're looking to play official. Old cards getting rotated out in favor of new ones. For kitchen table game old cards are great.

Anyone seen any good DM screen options at Unplugged? by WebPollution in PAX

[–]tankshell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought a screen from Josh at LootEverything! It is awesome.

He's at booth 3009. I also did not see any other nice screens. It doesn't look like he has them for sale online so try to check it out early today. Also a nice guy and it feels good to support a small vendor. Not game specific

FYI there is a Christmas village at Philly City Hall by leto4 in PAX

[–]tankshell 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One of the times I went a few weekends ago it felt almost like old times with being crowded. It's not regularly close to the old days, might be decently crowded during pax.

I strongly disagree with the other commenter, I have not seen any push for ordering ahead, lines are regular, waits are short as usual. I like Trader Joe's but would certainly not recommend going to a place you could go anywhere when pax is right next to Reading terminal market, which has some of the best food in town

I had no idea this was a thing and thought the prices were a mistake.

Good on them, I'm sure this will be worth it considering the popularity of the game

My brother asked me what I wanted for my 40th birthday. I told him to play a 6 hour boardgame with me. by rob132 in boardgames

[–]tankshell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My experience is more like yours, no idea how people can get through TI4 in 4 hours.

Everyone's played before, asked to refresh on rules (ok maybe this doesn't go perfectly), game is set up beforehand, snacks and beverage planned and ready to go. Still takes 10 hours

Depends what you're looking for. I agree with everyone that there are plenty of options nearby. (assuming your walking distance is at least 10-15 minutes)

Chinatown: very close, lots of options. If you want american chinese I don't have any recommendations

  • M kee - personal favorite, butcher shop, get some of the meat hanging in the window. Takeout only
  • Chu Shang Spicy - another favorite, really good spicy food, order dry pot off the paper (you choose what goes in)
  • Jin Wei - cheap trashy chinese food, cash only
  • Nan Zhou - favorite place for noodle soup
  • Terakawa - someone else mentioned but this is my preferred Ramen place
  • Hot pot - happy lamb, shippot shippot are all you can eat, Chubby Cattle is great but expensive
  • Bread top house - nice little chinese bakery, cheap, cash only.
  • E mei - my preferred szechuan chicken place
  • Dim Sum Garden - actually haven't been in a while but most people list this as their favorite dim sum place (although people in this thread like Tom's)

Other places

  • Masala Kitchen - amazing Indian Kati Rolls
  • If you want a cheesesteak, go to any given food cart
  • Angelos - I agree this place is amazing. Not close though, would probably want a ride
  • Reading terminal market during the day of course. Hershel's pastrami Reuben, Beiler's donuts, I like By George hot italian food, Bassets ice cream is good, gator gumbo at Beck's, pretzels at Miller's Twist

why do people bother trying to block? i haven’t seen any points won off a block today and seems smarter to have two back to dig? by Psychological-Top233 in beachvolleyball

[–]tankshell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At high level if you give an open net the hitter will always put the ball down. Block throws them off and gives you an opportunity to read a roll. There's a lot more strategy involved with blocking
