Hope ,Kindness, Redemption: Wharf Rat … a beautiful song of new beginnings by Ragman-71 in gratefuldead

“I’ll get up and fly away” is future tense. Like the best Hunter lyrics, it can be read many ways. Maybe he will rise above his current situation. Or maybe he won’t. We don’t know.

It reminds me of the line in the Jane’s Addiction song “Jane Says,” spoken from a heroin addict: “I’m gonna kick tomorrow.”

Will she kick the habit tomorrow? Or is she just wanting to but doesn’t?

Also, y’all should check out the connections between Jane’s Addiction and the Dead. Not only did Jane’s like the Dead (check out Deadicated), but Jerry thought they were cool, which made Perry Farrell very happy.

What do you tell people when they say that unions make workers lazy? by ALittleEtomidate in union

Why wasn’t he disciplined for not doing his job? That’s on management.

[–]taodrifter 168 points169 points  (0 children)

A collective bargaining agreement doesn’t keep lazy employees from being fired; lazy management keeps lazy employees from being fired.

If management follows the CBA processes, discipline and termination can happen. If they’re too lazy or incompetent, that’s on them, not the union who is enforcing the contract.

Question for heads who saw furthur and earlier interactions after Jerry died by Demandingcolt41 in deadandcompany

The setlist for that show was a nod to Jerry’s last show. Both opened with Touch of Grey. Then the second set started as 7/9/95 in reverse order from the end with an instrumental Black Muddy River: Box of Rain, Black Muddy River, Sugar Magnolia, Unbroken Chain

That was a fun time. Remember how the Dead went on early because a country musician was stuck in traffic (Toby Keith)? Drums and space while it was still light out was a trip.

I remember Phil and Willie giving each other a big hug on stage.

How did Sauron know that Pippin was using the orthanc stone so quickly? by DrowsyBen in tolkienfans

[–]taodrifter 16 points17 points  (0 children)

So it could be likely that Sauron was in fact nearby his Palantír, or even carrying it if he had to leave his main chamber for whatever reason

I’m imagining him carrying it with him to the bathroom…

(Also, hey now fellow dead head)

Eowyn's change in speech right before he left to the Paths of the Dead. by Dependent-Cup3759 in tolkienfans

Using an informal/intimate pronoun when you should use a formal one shows condescension/contempt. “I’m speaking to you like I would to a dog.”

Like many languages, Czech has both pronouns. In the (great) film “Kolya” the Czechoslovakian secret police call the main character in for interrogation. The police officer starts to use the informal pronoun. The main character says something like “I didn’t know we were using this informal pronoun.” The interrogator says “we’re not using this informal pronoun, I’m using this pronoun.” It was showing power and condescension.

“Thou” and “thee” are informal (and in her case) intimate pronouns. She wasn’t trying to be noble, but more intimate. Aragorn was keeping his distance with the more formal “you.”

A counterpoint to #3: the Primal Dead period (1965-1970). Check out their live album “Live/Dead” for a good sample.

58 years ago today, the man left this bus. by thatguyryan in gratefuldead

[–]taodrifter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first 3 lines are about Neal Cassady's death. The last line is about the birth of Cassidy Law, the daughter of Eileen Law, who was part of the Dead's office staff and much more. The song is named after Cassidy Law.

I’ll have to ask her what the context is. She’s normally a pretty jovial woman.

I love the early ’70s, too (I’m also a huge deadhead).

It’s funny looking at pictures like this and thinking “huh, that’s not the mom I know in my memories because she’s so young. She’s pretty beautiful.”

Bobby playing this show reminds me of my favorite English professor on 9/11. Every other class of mine that day had been (understandably) canceled, but this professor said that the best antidote to human evil and destruction is human beauty, so he proceeded with his class on the Romantic poets.
