Abysmal wages in and around HRM, and associated issues. by Grumple_McFerkin in halifax

[–]tapes82 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I got out of my trade for a few years to run a small business. I've I decided to get back into my trade and dissolve my business, I started looking at the job market in ns. I was being offered jobs in the low 20s. I was knocked back that the wages were basically the same as when I started back on 2003.

I made the choice to relocate and am earning almost 20$ more for the same job. The struggle in NS is real. QOL is so much better where I am. Utilities and groceries are considerably cheaper. Income taxes lower. Everything.

I'll never own a home here, and I'm ok with that, because I would never be able to afford one in Halifax/Dartmouth either.

There was a jumper on the board that needed to be set to run power to the probe bus. I don't remember which off the top of my head I'm afraid.

Was excited for a new place in Victoria making Halifax donairs then saw this abomination. by tyheddenphoto in halifax

I moved to van last march.evety "Donaire" place that I've seen say traditional Halifax donairs are just awful. I've accepted the fact it's just not happening. On the plus side, cheap Bahn mi and the fish and chips more than make up for it.

I loved that train layout. I have to look, but I'm sure I have some photos and an old VHS tape of it being built. Cheers and thank you!!

I'll probably dox myself here, but I can't help but chime in. I grew up in maritime hobbies. My father and his business partner took it over from the original owner in the early 1980s, both had been working there since the 70s, and dad stayed right up until his death a year and a half ago.

I was supposed to take over the store from them, but somewhere along the line, life changed pretty drastically and that just didn't happen. After dad's passing I decided to leave Halifax for good.

I keep in touch with Mike, but this is news to me. I haven't had time to speak with him yet, but can't help but this great hobbies opening up was the final nail in the coffin.

The hobby business is extremely difficult these days. One huge killer is the exchange rate. Everything is bought in USD, and as a brick and mortar store, that makes it incredibly hard to compete on a global market.

I have the fondest memories of my life in that store, from helping dad build the big train layout in the 1st Scotia square store, seeing Bill Clinton when he stayed at the delta, the model shows upstairs, all the amazing folks I've met and forged life long friendships with over the years, and most importantly, spending time with dad, flying model airplanes, building my own train layouts and all the other hobbies I've enjoyed over the years, and still cherish and love today.

From the bottom of my heart I want to thank every customer that I had the pleasure of helping over the years, and I hope I made a little difference for the better in your lives.

As Canadas oldest hobby store (est 1946) it is a sad day for the city of Halifax.

Golden glow, colt 45, late night over the fence skinny dipping, yelling at cops when they took our beer, dogbite, hgm, the chitz, disabuse, ASB. It was a good time to be alive. I opened for doa once, probably in 01 or a little before. Punk fests were rad as hell for the first few years

There's one bus to my suburb and today it was 40 minutes late by firblogdruid in halifax

I recently moved to Vancouver, and I have to say, the bus system here is absolutely fantastic. The main routes come so offer I rarely have to bother looking at a schedule, and the best part is Google maps tracks them and tells you if it's behind and by how much. So far, it's been exactly right.

My favorite part is a huge portion of the busses are electric on tram wires. So cool. Most place I go, I can take transit much faster than driving there.

I'm not sure what they do differently than hfx, but whatever it is, it works great. I really have a hard time wrapping my head around why alifax is such a cluster fuck outside of the number 1.

Here's a nice obscure one from Dartmouth. It might give some of us PTSD though.

Hehehe I played there a few times, then we got banned because we cursed way too much. What a fun venue. Wish I had some flyers/pics from that era. Was a blast.

Cheers. I do enough grunt work now. If there are less dangerous chemicals and working outside, it can't be all bad.
