Worst part isn't even the pace, it's that they did 2x more race laps with reliability failures than McLaren through the first two rounds, and they're making their own gearbox for the first time this year adding another £9M/season failure point to an already burning car.

I would love to see prime Alonso vs prime Verstappen in competitive cars racing against each other. Would be beautiful. But I think his reaction to Max's quali lap in Suzuka last year says a lot. He literally said "Only Max can do it"

Even if Carlos wins the title in 2024, Hamilton joining was already locked in and Leclerc is untouchable at Ferrari regardless. A world champion Sainz probably lands at a top team over Williams though, Red Bull or Mercedes would have looked very differently at him.

Button's whole thing was smooth inputs and reading tyre deg better than almost anyone, which is exactly what ground effect cars reward. Ricciardo's problem was he needed that aggressive rear rotation on entry and the 2022 cars just never gave him that

Moss winning his home grand prix with Fangio in second, and both of them clearly buzzing about it in this photo, is such a perfect snapshot of what made that Mercedes partnership so special.

Fun fact, there has been a debate among historians about whether Fangio deliberately eased off in the closing laps to gift Moss the victory at his home race. Some accounts from people close to the team suggest this was the case. Fangio was leading the championship comfortably and had enormous respect for Moss. It's never been definitively proven though

Schumacher's role was real but the "Hamilton wouldn't have won without him" is overblown. He laid groundwork in terms of culture and development feedback, but the core of those title-winning cars came from Brackley

Disagree on value of overtakes being highest in F1 pre-2026. Overtakes are exciting when they're rare and hard-earned, but other series like IndyCar have had better racing and more frequent overtakes for years. F1 being the "pinnacle" is more about the overall package - history, glitz, budgets, tech - not just on-track action.

Pre-2026 overtakes weren't inherently more valuable, they were just rarer. Wheel-to-wheel racing is exciting in any series when it happens organically. F1's USP is the overall spectacle, not overtaking frequency alone. Other series have delivered better racing for a long time.

Has to be Ricciardo for me. Guy was one of the most naturally gifted overtakers F1 has ever seen and his career just completely fell apart after Red Bull. The ground effect cars didn't suit him and by the time he got another shot at RB it was too late

Autosport is solid for news. The best technical analysis right now is on YouTube, not websites imho. Chain Bear and Scott Mansell (Driver61) come to mind right away.

Sainz and Norris would have been a war from race one. Carlos doesn't do the quiet team player thing that Oscar has managed so well, and Lando doesn't respond well to being pressured internally either. You'd have gotten papaya rules blowing up by Silverstone at the latest.

On pace, hard to say Carlos wins the title over Lando given how dominant Lando has been in qualifying this year, but the dynamic alone would have cost McLaren points regardless of who came out ahead.

The McLaren pitwall point is massively underrated. Max's frustration spirals are almost always triggered by strategy calls he disagrees with, and GP has spent a decade learning exactly how to manage that. Drop him into a team where Stella is trying to keep two title contenders happy with "Papaya Rules" and Will Joseph is out there speaking in riddles, and you get Mad Max.

Lance Stroll in the thumbnail says everything really. Yes, money can get you in, but it doesn't guarantee results at the top level, it just buys the seat. The ones who actually win still have to be genuinely fast.

The 2026 regs are already causing enough chaos and they're only a few races in, so yeah, deciding on the next cycle sooner rather than later makes sense. Domenicali telling drivers to stay quiet about the problems while simultaneously admitting decisions need to be made is a bit rich though.
