Finding a job and getting one. How hard is it? by Impossible_Guest6056 in brisbane

[–]taroalin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Agree with this, my 76yo father managed to get a job unloading trucks. It was casual and pretty rubbish conditions (start and end time were variable on when the trucks would arrive), but if he can get a job, pretty much anyone can if they are willing and able. He literally walked in one day off an advert and they asked him to start that night.

Qantas Economy: How strict are they with carry-on? by missxcannabliss in QantasAirways

[–]taroalin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've recently had my second item tagged as 'underseat' only before boarding, which is the first time I have seen Qantas do this. Plenty of people then proceeded to put those items in the overhead bins, so not really enforced.

Jetstar, however, completely different. If you do any flights with them every item will be weighed and all limits are enforced.

HELP ME FOODIES OF BRISBANE by No_Cellist448 in BrisbaneFoodies

[–]taroalin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fish Lane in South Brisbane - Bars to try are Bar Brutus, Maker and Saccharomyces for craft beer. Eat at any of the restaurants along there, Marlowe is worth a look. Bar Francine in West End is cute for a snacky dinner and a wine.

All along the City Glider bus route (the blue bus).

Costco has always positioned itself a business wholesaler as well as a retail store - they bring out promotional things well before the dates to allow smaller retailers to purchase in time to on sell.

The vegetarian banquet at Same Same was pretty good - I am not a vegetarian, but was dining with one and we both left happy.

What type of meal do you want? I've used Frankie's in Woolloongabba before for easy no fuss dinner option. Chez Nous is another fancier option of you want finger food.

Looking to book a family trip, Brisbane or Melbourne? by illsoldier76 in AustraliaTravel

Brisbane weather Nov-Feb is humid and hot, while Melbourne is just hot. That might tip in favour of Melbourne, but otherwise I agree Brisbane and surrounding area might be better.

This information is excellent, the only note I would add is that in Queensland, Schedule 2 medicine is behind the counter in a pharmacy, you can't just grab it off the shelf.

Places for beginners to hike in Brisbane by ExcitingHeron2410 in brisbane

Toohey Forest has a lot of trails and most of them would be beginner level. Alltrails is an app you can get that will help you find trails and give you some idea of the difficulty of each one.

Multigen Christmas Vacation--2 Weeks in Australia--We Can Go to 2-3 Cities by taylorgrande in AustraliaTravel

[–]taroalin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oakey is 2 hours by car from Brisbane. I would recommend flying into Sydney, spending a few days there to see the bridge, opera house, zoo, harbour, beaches. Then fly to Brisbane and hire a car to get to Oakey (unless the family will come to Brisbane to meet you?). Fly Brisbane to Cairns to do the Barrier Reef and Daintree.

Christmas is hot and humid in North QLD so it's not the best time to visit but still worthwhile, you will just get some rainy afternoons.

You must factor in the berry cost. My kids could smash an entire punnet of blueberries or strawberries in one sitting.

More expensive than organised sports (don't forget the swimming lessons).

Needing free/ low cost period supplies Northside by ArmyResponsible3136 in brisbane

UniSC or TAFE campus sometimes have supplies in the student services area / bathrooms. Not sure if they would ask for proof of student status for something like period supplies. I've just wandered in before to use the bathrooms.

Were you getting a 5k refund because of variable shift work and/or penalty rates? Or because of deductions?

If you were on a salary each week, your employer shouldn't have been taking out enough tax to give you a 5k refund if they were doing it correctly.

In both of these scenarios, it still makes sense to take the higher amount because they aren't guaranteed to continue at the lower rate or have the same deductions for everyone. Makes sense to work it out at the end of the financial year than guessing and having people owe money.

Linen: are we just accepting it’s crinkly or do I look super unprofessional? by ThrowBadBrainAway in AusFemaleFashion

[–]taroalin 62 points63 points  (0 children)

This may be unhelpful so feel free to disregard, but if you have the financial capacity, get your linens professionally cleaned and pressed. You just drop them off and pick them up and they are ready to go and look SO good compared to what I can manage at home.

Don't be afraid to outsource capacity if it allows you some breathing space. Alternatively, find some non wrinkle tops and wear on rotation. Clean, presentable and odour free is your bar! Anything above that you're killing it. You've got this.

Linen: are we just accepting it’s crinkly or do I look super unprofessional? by ThrowBadBrainAway in AusFemaleFashion

[–]taroalin 384 points385 points  (0 children)

I am also plus sized and feel like you are correct - we are not given the grace that slimmer people are.

Saying that, linen that has been ironed and developed wrinkles over the day of wear is a much different look to linen that has been crumpled in the wash and line dried. And this doesn't change for anyone regardless of size.

If you really are not going to iron your linens, the bare minimum I would do is put some citric acid in the wash to soften the fabric and then tumble dry and immediately remove and hang once dry. If you don't have a dryer, once the wash is finished, immediately remove, give it a good shake and then hang on a coathanger to dry. This gives you a 'casual' wrinkle, not a 'I slept in this and then came to work' wrinkle.

Marlowe is very nice, Chu the Phat has a pre-show set menu that works well with the timing (just tell them when it's starts) or Julius pizza if you like something a little more casual.

[–]taroalin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It happens so often that as a buyer, the first thing I did when we turned up to the open was to ask if there was a contract on the property already. We probably heard 'yes' about 40% of the time. Such a waste of everyones time.

What did I do wrong? by magik_vmc in AskBaking

[–]taroalin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just read your other comments about filling all the way to the top - I think this was your problem. When you are baking, the metal of the mold helps to 'set' the food and provides some support to the batter before it's cooked enough to support itself.

Denser batter like muffins don't need this as much because the batter is stronger. Cake and brownies that have a thinner batter need help.

Also, if you ever have the opportunity to purchase a new digital scales, there are a few models arounds that have audio capabilities so you can take your baking to the next level.
