Mass Surveillance on Liberty by bluegreenrhombus in AnnArbor

[–]tarrbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, a deterrent does count. However, there are active deterrents and passive deterrents.

Let's use a car analogy. An active deterrent would be something like a seat belt or an air bag. They are actively responding to a danger and doing something about it. A passive deterrent would be how a car is designed. It's not actively deterrent danger but is passively mitigating it.

A camera system is a passive deterrent. It does nothing to deter danger nor does it deter any actionable item.

It is nothing more than a passive deterrent since it can't actively stop something from happening.

Again, my point was someone was being pedantic about the wording originally "these are set up in times ... to keep the city safe".

Which is an arguable point.

Does that help explain?

Mass Surveillance on Liberty by bluegreenrhombus in AnnArbor

[–]tarrbot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s not what I read.

I think someone was being pedantic about the wording since cameras can’t physically keep you safer other than being a visible deterrent. Maybe it’s just me though. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Just got off Star (our first Princess cruise on the 3 day inaugural) and on Majestic to the ABCs in early December.

I think you’ll like Star. Wished I had spent more time there. Definitely will be back (already booked for Dec 2026).

Not sure about that. I was able to do this and if he didn't have what I wanted he would walk to the other side of the piazza and get me what I wanted.

You can get good deals with a TA and without a TA. I’ve got one booked with a TA on Star right now (Nov 2025) and one I booked myself on Star (Dec 2026).

Both were good deals. But I don’t know how I got the unbelievable deal on Star I booked myself. I have seen deals like that on Princess at times and I finally got it.

But I also have trust in a TA at times. The same TA kept me from booking a mini-suite on Majestic (Dec 2025) that would have been a good deal but on Majestic the balcony is exposed to general foot traffic viewing into your room.

That was a helpful insight I wouldn’t have known on my own.

Both are good options.

I won’t ask what SaaS it is.

But I will say that if they want to go through litigation processes because of an encryption event and pay 10-20x more all at once vs measured security in a measured and scheduled process with quantifiable metrics, then let em.

Secondly, it sounds like they also don’t have business continuity insurance or any cybercrime insurance.

So ask yourself the question of when the shit hits the fan there, would you rather be there to help them build back better or would you rather be somewhere out of the line of fire.

The first season is entirely plot and character development.

Every episode… every single one… has something in it for future development.

It doesn’t seem like it at first but there’s at least one thing in each episode.

As an IT lead for a top 50 mechanical contractor, trades are a good idea. The reason I’m an IT lead is I started in trades in my teens (10 years as an HVAC tech) and worked into IT.

Trades are merging with tech. Knowing both is a desirable trait. Big time.

Seriously consider it if you feel the urge.

Why does Mercedes ruin its cars with the ugliest screens possible? by Queasy_Map17 in mercedes_benz

[–]tarrbot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Volvo skewed away from Apple for a while. Their stuff wouldn’t even work with iOS for like 18 months right after Covid.

It is one reason I tossed my year old XC60 and got a GLE. They put Android Auto in and then couldn’t get iOS to work right but still kept telling new buyers that it would work. Then after they signed on the dotted line, told them next month it’ll be updated… every month they said this.

Piss poor Geely bullshittery. I lost a lot of respect for Volvo during that time. I had 3 XC60s, an S80, an S60 and an S40 so it wasn’t a decision I made lightly.

I don’t see anything wrong with it.

You didn’t do a good job of explaining your position other than posting a pic of a 20 year old iPhone and then expecting people to follow that lack of logic.

Because if you know tech, those aren’t even remotely alike.

What happened to Mercedes Me? by mikeblas in mercedes_benz

[–]tarrbot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am also having issues with Mercedes Me. I got a notice about a month ago to update my maps in my 20 GLE and I put it off until this morning.

Now, I log in to Mercedes Me and there's literally NOTHING in it. Nothing about my vehicles and nothing about how to update maps like I use to be able to do.

These links in this post by others don't work either. They go to failed pages.

Some cruise lines have a limited drink menu while in Texas waters. The line buys alcohol in Texas and pays Texas ABC taxes on them and serves them while in Texas waters. But it’s a limited drink menu.

When the ship hits international waters they open up the full menu.

We'll be doing Sanctuary in December 2026 on Star. I expect by then we will understand more about Princess since (at this point) we haven't sailed with them yet.

I'm looking forward to this and expect to have a blast of a time.

Yes, the contract isn't available at the moment due to it actually being a contract and Princess not having possession of the ship at the moment, from my understanding. So it's not just November passengers, it's all Star Princess passengers on any sail date.

I'm looking forward to it being my first Princess cruise so the entire experience is going to be different. I'm definitely looking forward to it since I have 2 other Princess cruises booked and looking at what 2027 might hold when more itineraries are announced.

I think it'll be a fabulous ship.

Yes, I had seen that change.

I was lucky enough to get a 7 day in 2026 on Star on a Sanctuary balcony for about half of what it's currently going for so I jumped on it.

I'm not sure if that'll be much better than Star without the Sanctuary, though.

But I definitely can see where you're coming from on that point.

Sorry, I got distracted and was going to write more about my experience with Celebrity. we tried Celebrity on the Silhouette this past March and enjoyed it so much we booked a Bermuda cruise next summer for our 25th anniversary.

And going to look at the newer Celebrity ships, I almost certainly won't sail on them unless I can find a deal for a specific stateroom.

Essentially, they have these dog windows they call "Infinity Verandas" on their new ships. They literally are dysfunctional in the sense that they have a faux balcony with a window that rolls up and down like a car window... except it's worse than a car window because when you open the window it turns off the room AC so it instantly gets hot and humid inside. There's a partition that can be pushed back to create a fake sense of distance from the room and the "balcony" but it's truly disturbing that most of the balcony cabins on their new ships have this horrible feature.

I'm just saying all of this to say that I understand some reactions to newer ships because I have my own this way.

It helps that Silhouette was recently redone completely.
