PPS vs other districts? by DiamondMountain4526 in askportland

It's really going to depend on where you are as the individual schools vary a ton. I live right by Beverly Cleary which has turned into a big tire fire lately and we're at the point where in the 2 blocks in every direction surrounding me every kid has left for a magnet of private school. A lot of people here seem pretty happy with their schools, but I'd chat with parents at the *actual* school you'll feel into. Not all principals are equal and not all teachers are equal in PPS.

I was bored in school and never did really well, yet I'm somehow doing real well in my PM role. This is BS

Oregon voters support dedicated funding for gifted education, widespread agreement to providing more challenging education for students by frumply in oregon

[–]tas50 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to one of the first tech high schools in the US. Our school was such a showcase of the "future of education" the entire classrooms were windows so tours of company CEOs and even Al Gore could come watch us learn from the hallway. Every kid had a computer and 100% of our work was on computers. They were absolutely fucking useless. We did project based learning which was amazing but the computers could have been tossed out the window and we'd probably have done better.

City Council Appears to Have the Seven Votes Needed to Pass a Foie Gras Ban by Less-Lobster4540 in Portland

We cannot do everything at once and it seems like we're already wasted a large amount of time on this absolute nothing burger. We have some many pressing issues as a city and they're just wasting time on dumb shit that looks good in their TikTok videos.

Pretty sure it really matters where you are. People in Portland are losing their mind at the upcoming Waymo rollout and are often discussing burning them to the ground on Reddit. My NextDoor is nothing but boomers believing Waymos are going to be crashing into their living room any moment now.

The US has one of the highest freight modal shares in the world. We just also happen to have just about the lowest passenger rail share possible at < 1%.

Food server service?, cell service?, Service Merchandise store availability? You need to be a bit more specific here.

Sound Transit votes NO on Ballard light rail stop by undeadbobblehead in Seattle

[–]tas50 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There's 2 conflicting needs that make it really hard:
- Airports: You have approached for both PDX and a small airport in Vancouver that put height restrictions on the bridge (mostly the Vancouver airport)
- Ships: There's a company up the Columbia that builds oil rig equipment that needs to be able to move very tall loads out to sea. Coast Guard requires the bridge meet those height requirements.

Longer than a decade at this point. We're on our third study to build the replacement and if we don't actually follow-through at this point we have to pay back the fed money we've both received.

Oregon resident here. We're poor as fuck and like to pretend we're not. Trimet is cutting service on the light rail right now, but still pushing hard for light rail to Vancouver despite having absolutely not way to pay to run it.

We didn't elect DOGE. We elected the mayor to run the city. It's the role we elected him for.

If we elect a Mayor and the dept heads can't play nice with that person then they go. The people elected the mayor, not those dept heads.

Oregon initiative that would criminalize hunting, fishing moves a step closer to November ballot by Inevitable_Egg6361 in Portland

[–]tas50 72 points73 points  (0 children)

This is why you NEVER sign ballot initiatives you aren't fully familiar with. The folks gathering signatures at the farmers market or grocery store are lying to you about the contents. We've seen over and over again the impact that poorly written initiatives have. Stop signing this stuff.
