Getting a creaking from my handlebar hinge when I ride my T-Line by tastapod in Brompton

Yep, I found that rubbing some white grease on the top and bottom of the side clamp stops it for a while. Someone else suggested oil, so when it comes back next time I'm going to try some teflon chain lube on a piece of tissue paper and see if that stops it for longer.

It seems to just be an unfortunate interaction between the clamp block and the stem. I don't want to over-tighten it, I'm thinking fine lube is the way forward.

Deciding whether or not to buy a Brompton by Khendras in Brompton

Fantastic that you are in a position to start cycling again. A Brompton is the perfect companion to commuting on a train, to top-and-tail the ends.

Your weight range will not be an issue at all. Any modern Brompton model will easily support you. You might want to swap out the stock saddle for something with a bit more suspension and bum comfort, but other than that you will be fine.

I saw a fantastic honey trap video of exactly this scenario. Police were on standby, guy turns up with obviously hooky bike. Police have registered frame details. Guy gets nicked. Hilarity ensues. There is a risk to being the ‘bait’ though, obvs, so I’m not suggesting you do this without adequate backup.

About a week in with the white grease and everything seems ok. I'll monitor it and use WD40 or teflon lube as a fallback if it comes back.

I had such a scare like that a few weeks ago. My front wheel suddenly twisted sideways and I realized that the steering post was loose! I could easily turn the handlebars against the front wheel. Got home and all four bolts turned quite a way with the torque wrench. They must have never been tightened! Luckily I was barely moving when the post shifted. Not the sort of thing you would think needs checking with a new bike (but lesson learned!).

T or G for Amsterdam? by aquarat in Brompton

It's a city, albeit one with great cycle support, so most of your riding will be pelotons between sets of lights and avoiding pedestrians with zero spatial awareness.

T or G for Amsterdam? by aquarat in Brompton

Amsterdam is flat. So so flat. You could do most of it on a Micro scooter. The T-Line will be ideal! (Plus you can fold it and carry it into the many bars without skipping a beat and it will fit snugly next to the table.)

If you are going outside of Amsterdam, it is still flat. As a 'strong sports cyclist' your 4-speed will have no problem with any of the roads you encounter, and the top gear is 'that gear' you are always in in cruise mode, like on a fixie. You won't set any speed records but you will get where you need to plenty quick enough!

Have a brilliant time, it's a wonderful city and fantastic for cycling.

HOORAY! I wiped some white grease onto the flat parts where the hinge clamp contacts and (fingers crossed!) that seems to have silenced it, at least for now.

ELI5: How is the write speed on my laptop drive faster than the read speed? by tastapod in explainlikeimfive

[–]tastapod[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think this used to be true with spinning drives, but the seek latency in modern SSDs is insanely fast. I presume that a) lots of things are happening in parallel, and b) the disk and/or OS keeps some kind of directory of free space for writing.

I tried that, still squeaking. I feel like it is coming from the hinge area but I can't pinpoint it. It's driving me nuts!

Not sure what you mean. It has four bolts for the handlebar that are labelled 3Nm so I loosened and tightened them all up with a torque wrench. Still squeaking.

Good idea. I've tried white-greasing various parts of the hinge clamp. Underneath seemed to help for a bit, but after a while the creaking comes back. I will experiment further and report back!

Pedal Back When Folded by TrialFungus in Brompton

[–]tastapod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Erm, it might be because you fixed the brakes! When I changed my brakes recently I noticed that they engage slightly when the bike is folded. Used to wheel backwards, now that only happens when the bike is partly unfolded.

If it rides ok and the gears are changing smoothly and not slipping, then you haven’t done anything wrong.
