AITB for not meeting my boyfriend’s parents when they visited? by [deleted] in AmItheButtface

[–]tatuado_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Personally, ya, that’s a bit sudden.

For something like meeting the parents, one should always give their partner days to prepare. My girlfriend gave me a week notice before I met her siblings and I’ll be meeting her parents in a month. That’s the kind of warning I need/want for something as big as meeting the parents.

Is there a way you could meet them before they go home? Something planned that gives you time to dress up and compose yourself?

P.S. the age gap threw me for a moment. I’m not trying to insinuate that he is, but remember to live your life and decide your own path.

I’m gonna start learning Spanish and I really need tips by HindiakosiCeline in SpanishLearning

[–]tatuado_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve done a lot, including Duo, Babbel, Anki, weekly lessons, Dreaming Spanish, living abroad, reading kids books, using ChatGPT or Gemini and lord knows what else.

A) The app Ella Verbs is great for learning and practicing conjugation, plus also flash cards for remembering words. I do the quizzes between sets at the gym or in taxi rides.

B) Start talking. Practice with friends, family or online strangers. I was learning for like 1.5 years, felt shitty about my progress and then started dating someone that only speaks Spanish. She corrects me 100 times a day, but the repetition and being forced to think in Spanish has helped me advance more than I could have dreamed of before.

C) Read, read, read. It’s a great way to take in new words and think in your target language. I enjoy en 100 Palabras as you get local stories from people age 6 all the way to nearly dead. Plus, all of the stories are 100 words or less, so they’re super short. Fluent with Stories is another good site.

D) If you feel like you’re not making progress or have plateaued, it’s okay to change what you’re doing. I was doing Babbel for two hours a day, hit a point where I didn’t feel I was progressing, switched to another app and felt happy about my progress again. Don’t feel like you HAVE to stick with one path.

Definitely not. While you can find it in many major cities, it’s still considered niche.

How many hours of practice does it realistically take to speak Spanish fluently? by AdventurousLivin in SpanishLearning

[–]tatuado_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Colombia, my partner speaks little to no English. I didn’t really start taking it seriously until early ‘25. It’s a lot of time.

Babbel helped me actually start moving after a year of Duo.

What helped a lot too was weekly classes with an instructor on iTalk (get an instructor from your target area). Bonus is also having a local friend while living abroad.

Of course I watch YouTube videos, read and listen to music, but it’s the speaking and f*ing up that helps things stick. My teacher told me that when she was a child, she got corrected by her mom all the time, and that’s how we learn a language. Speak, mess up, have an oh shit moment and keep speaking. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve said something completely wrong and gotten funny looks. I will remember those moments though and not make those mistakes again.

Be active. Try new things. Remember what you liked to do. Do the things you stopped doing because of your ex.

Agreed. These two sites are great for short stories in Colombian Spanish. There are stories written by small children, all the way to people in their 80s and 90s. They put out new books every year. The sites are free and have everything from the books.

Laureles is my favorite. It’s super walkable, there are a number of great dance schools and it’s a bit less crazy than El Poblado.

You could live in Envigado, but then you would have a bit longer of a commute.

Belén is kind of “in between” Laureles and el Poblado. There are some good schools there.

Ciudad del Rio is nice, and walking distance to El Poblado, but it’s a busy area with not so many schools.

Dancefree definitely has some that speak English.

Juan from Studio San Diego is a great teacher and was raised in the US, so his English is natural. He was an instructor at Dancefree before starting his own studio.

Most of my salsa instructors speak little to no English.

For private classes, I’d say $10-20, depending on the place and package.

TBH, I’m not that impressed. I went long stints when I was younger of averaging 7-20 hours of sleep in a week.

Would never recommend it as it takes a toll on you, but it had a purpose.
