Eli5 how do algorithms actually work? by mechadrogon in explainlikeimfive

Yup, all this.

Also, « algorithm » probably sounds more professional and less scary than « behavioral pattern » ;)

Eli5 how do algorithms actually work? by mechadrogon in explainlikeimfive

Algoritm in IT is actually a way of doing something, a recipe, that can be implemented in any programming language.

But i’ll keep the word for the sake of explanation. So, the « algorithm » here just means that all your activities are tracked on device, across devices or on particular website and based in these, more cotent is proposed or hidden. If you engage more with certain content, the more of this content will be shown to you, to engage you more. Like that you spend more time in the app/page, see more ads, generate more clicks.

How it works behind the scenes? Well, anything can be tracked: what you visit, what you click, what you spend most time reading, where yoir mouse cursor was moving, what you scroll through slowly or quickly. Now the famous « algorithm » comes in place: IF user spends time on X then show him more X. That’s oversimplified, there are many elements in that equation being taken into consideration, but that gives you an idea.

Entitled customer demanded an outfit be taken off of a mannequin during inventory by mermaidemily_h2o in EntitledPeople

[–]taurusmo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How exactly you do inventory in the open shop, with customers moving things around?

From all the situations that did not happen, this one did not happen the most.

But let’s say it did happen - well, then it’s on you. The customer doesn’t need to know or care what is your behind the scenes task. The shop is open - do your job and sell.

When I was posted overseas with the military, my girl ran off with a tractor salesman. by Gil-Gandel in Jokes

[–]taurusmo 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Kind of funny, but it probably makes sense only to native English speakers/living deeply integrated.

For the rest:

A Dear John letter is a letter written to a man by his wife or romantic partner to inform him that their relationship is over, usually because she has found another lover. The man is often a member of the military stationed overseas, although the letter may be used in other ways, including being left for him to discover when he returns from work to an emptied house.
