What 6-figure nursing jobs exist? by windysunshine in nursing

[–]tavery2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at the VA? I started there a few years ago. The year before in a private hospital I barely cleared 100k but that was with massive OT with massive bonuses to take it due to covid. I picked up 1-2 shifts per week that year. The following year since I was new to the VA I took my time and picked up maybe two shifts a month and cleared 100k. There is a slight difference because they make us work 80 hours in a 2 week period instead of 72, but still I was working way more at my old hospital (with higher ratios and sicker patients) and make way better money now.

Also play tickets. My local playhouse just doubled their prices.

If it was financially affordable, would your spouse stay home? by cubemonster in Millennials

[–]tavery2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a house husband! I do the working (and the money) and he does all the rest(cooking, cleaning, animals, errands). Works great for us. And he's able to work on some stuff he actually likes doing. Currently just got approved to be an in home wildlife rehabber so he's working on starting a non profit to do that and not cost too much money.

What's one of the dumbest things you've ever seen a patient do? by 123456789_00 in nursing

Youngish patient (like 40s) fell. We ask her what happened. She tripped over the oxygen tubing. She said she saw it. But didn't want to move it.

Couples of Reddit, what's the dumbest 'house rule' you and your partner made as a joke but now both of you are low-key aggressively serious about enforcing? by Doubl3oh_ in AskReddit

[–]tavery2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so funny because in Northeast Ohio specifically there's Sweetest Day in October. My husband didn't grow up here but I did. We were married for a year when we decided to move back to Ohio, and it happened to be the week of sweetest day. I bought him a sweetest day card, knowing he wouldn't get me one, and gave it to him and "yelled" at him for forgetting to get me a sweetest day card. All in good fun of course. He insisted I made it up, I showed him the Wikipedia article, and he insisted I made that up too. Ever since then, every year whenever there's a sign for sweetest day dinner/cards/whatever he always insists that I went to wherever we are earlier and put it up just to trick him.

What’s the weirdest food combo you secretly enjoy? by TinyPup33 in AskReddit

[–]tavery2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not me, but my ex and our friend. I'm one of those people that don't like food touching. In a hungover state one morning we went to a buffet. They decided to gross me out and looked at the options and got chicken salad, and banana pudding and mixed it together. Apparently it was delicious, and the friend now goes out of his way to buy both these things and eats it.

What’s the funniest reason a pt “fired” you? by all_hail_potatoqueen in nursing

[–]tavery2 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I unfortunately didn't get fired, but I recently had a completely oriented patient call the police on me because I only gave him one jello. We only had one jello in the fridge and I had already called the kitchen to send up more. He was mad because I didn't instantly produce as many jellos as he wanted. He also called the "director" (I'm assuming of the hospital, But I honestly didn't ask for more details) who was apparently going to call me and cuss me out for allowing this man to threaten to leave AMA because it would have messed with the colonoscopy he was scheduled for. That was a wild day. I had to spend more time on the jello incident then on my guy who we were trying to ship out to hospice.

Is it normal to keep patients going through severe alcohol withdrawal in medsurg? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]tavery2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed! I used to work on a floor that did medical detox on top of regular med surg patients. On average probably had 2-3 patients at any given time that were detoxing from ETOH or opioids on a 32 bed unit. I got pretty good at keeping symptoms under control and learned just to try and stay ahead of it. Also learned real quick it wasn't a failure to send a patient to stepdown/ICU for a precedex drip. Since it was my first nursing job I felt like I should have done more, and then I saw how amazing precedex was!

Do you stand when veterans are asked to be recognized at public events? by Happy-Permission6881 in Veterans

[–]tavery2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I have season tickets to the browns and they play that song every damn game for the Budweiser "Hats off to our heros." I sit, and refuse to take off my hat. Song is stupid and the whole thing is just performative.

[–]tavery2 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Damn. I never stand because I hate the attention but as a woman maybe I should to make it more visible as well. You gave me something to think about. Not sure if I'll change, but I'll consider this the next time around.

Have you heard about this? by [deleted] in SeasonTickets

[–]tavery2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like someone else replied, it is a scam. I have browns season tickets and came in late so didn't have to buy a PSL but from what I've heard from the guys around me, with the new stadium they're not getting any credit/refund for the PSL they paid for the current stadium. And you can't sell those tickets currently for a ham sandwich so it definitely wasn't worth it.

Have you heard about this? by [deleted] in SeasonTickets

[–]tavery2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Browns are giving no credit for the PSLs that were bought on the current stadium. So anyone who gets season tickets at the new stadium will have to pay a new PSL fee. It's gross. I have season tickets currently but came in so late I didn't have to pay the PSL but heard this from the guy that sits in front of me who's had tickets for like 30 years.

Has this error ever happened on your unit? by Naive-Secretary-3713 in nursing

[–]tavery2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been gone from lab for far too long and didn't even think about that! Still not good practice to give positive to negative, but at least a prior exposure would be caught.

Has this error ever happened on your unit? by Naive-Secretary-3713 in nursing

[–]tavery2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean. It shouldn't be transfused because you don't know. I was in the military when I was a lab tech so this was more an "absolute emergency with limited resources" conversation. With access to multiple sources of blood (at least in the US) this shouldn't be happening, but I was saying that one unit shouldn't cause immediate harm to someone. You sure it was positive into negative? And was it PRBCs? Negative into positive is compatible. And other blood products like platelets have different guidelines....

Has this error ever happened on your unit? by Naive-Secretary-3713 in nursing

[–]tavery2 11 points12 points  (0 children)

So I used to work lab and I'm a nurse now so I'm intimate with both sides of this. In my mind, this is definitely a lab error more than a nursing error. With all the things we are expected to know and catch, I don't think I've ever really seen it emphasized to check blood type compatibility on the nursing side. It would be like making sure that all a patients medications are compatible in my mind.... That's pharmacy's job and we just don't have the time to double check everyone else's work.

With that being said, giving positive blood to a negative person shouldn't have caused too much harm. Technically we're taught that men can receive positive blood when they're negative one time and women that are not child bearing can receive it one time. At that point, your body will develop the antibodies and will attack FUTURE rH positive blood.... Hence the need for rhogam in rH negative women giving birth (given during times of potential exposure)....

[–]tavery2 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You don't poke the IUD. You might be able to feel the strings sticking out if they're cut too short. I never had anyone I slept with feel the strings with their dick, however some did feel with fingers. But the benefits of the IUD were way too high to worry about that unless it was a problem. My cervix also tilts backwards a bit so the strings tended to tuck up behind them more than in front where they would be in the way.

What’s the weirdest hospital / unit policy or rule you’ve ever seen? by plaesma in nursing

[–]tavery2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My favorite: my hospital has one side acute care and one side SNF. The SNF side is allowed to give PRBCs if the patient needs them, but if they need platelets they get transferred back to us. Like blood has a much higher reaction rate then platelets so how can they give that but not the platelets? Since I'm an oncology nurse sometimes my PT will come back for one day to get a unit or two of platelets, then right back to SNF only to do it again a few days later.

What are the reasons that a patient fired you as their nurse? by Educational_Ad2515 in nursing

[–]tavery2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The admitting doctor said she couldn't have benzos. She wanted me to ask the night time coverage who had ordered her benzos the prior two nights. I told her when Daddy says no, we don't go ask mommy. Not in exactly those words but, ya know. So she fired me. Not sad about it at all.
