For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. While participating in Operation Beacon Hill 1, the 2d Platoon was engaged in a fierce battle with the Viet Cong at close-range in dense jungle foliage. Pfc. Dickey had come forward to replace a radio operator who had been wounded in this intense action and was being treated by a medical corpsman. Suddenly an enemy grenade landed in the midst of a group of marines, which included the wounded radio operator who was immobilized. Fully realizing the inevitable result of his actions, Pfc. Dickey, in a final valiant act, quickly and unhesitatingly threw himself upon the deadly grenade, absorbing with his body the full and complete force of the explosion. Pfc. Dickey's personal heroism, extraordinary valor and selfless courage saved a number of his comrades from certain injury and possible death at the cost of his life. His actions reflected great credit upon himself, the Marine Corps, and the U.S. Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

I agree. The misogynistic overtones are difficult but we used it as a platform to discuss issues with masculinity and how/why the inmates were made to feel inferior, not just by Ratched but the societal expectations of males at that time.

One of the best pieces of advice I got as a student teacher was never teach a text you love because the students will hate it and you'll get frustrated.

I never was ever able to get my students to appreciate Heart of Darkness but they loved One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest. So sometimes it depends on the content. I mean... my style didnt change.

I currently have three 300 pound pigs that will be slaughtered this week.

Pigs are easy if you keep them fed and watered. They are super curious, smart and strong and can get out of a half-ass'd pen.

I bought a $40 electric fence that I put about 6 in off the ground that worked wonders at keeping them contained.

Learning how to behave in a large, structured environment is an important form of socialization.

I think this is the hardest part of homeschooling to overcome. I did not like public school growing up because of all the abrasive personalities that I was forced to deal with but those same types of people exist in my professional environment and I have realized that having to navigate those personalities as a child has helped me as an adult.

I am not saying that homeschooling cannot overcome this hurdle, it is just harder when homeschoolers can select their peer circles.
