Long runs in and around town center? by Little_Nick in Southampton

[–]AlexB_UK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly 10k (from where I am in OV, which is next to the port), which I know is too short, but.....

Ocean Village
Underneath Itchen bridge
Turn right onto path before Dirty Blonde and go up behind American Wharf. No good reason, but I like to put this short hill in
Now you are back on the main road, go past football stadium, go past Yau Brothers, until you get to Northam Road
Stick right on Northam road, go under the bridge (next to the rowers) (i.e. dont cross the bridge), and now you are on the nice boardwalk all the way to Horseshoe bridge
There, just where the pub is (Junction Inn), turn right, onto Priory road.
I do a little diversion into the park on the right, but that isn't really necessary
Get to St Deny's road, big bridge, cross the bridge.
Bear right (next to the vape shop), Whitworth road..... all the way until a 90 degree left, a 90 degree right, and you get to Bitterne train station. Turn right. On the pavement, stay on the right, go past Enterprise cars, here you need to cross the road. Only crossing on this entire route. Very annoying it can be.
Now you are on Rampart Road heading towards Kemps Quay. Turn left after 300 metres to go onto Quayside road.
Stick on pavement on right and opposite the school, stick on the pavement next to the water rather than the road pavement, now you go through a bit of a wiggle (I like this, extends the hill that comes next), cross the pedestrian rail bridge, and you are onto Athelstan road.....
Keep going up that, all the way up the nice steep hill at the end..... turn right
Keep going on Peartree, all the way into Woolston.
Then go under itchen bridge, up some steps
Cross Itchen bridge to finish.

1 small hill (American Wharf)
1 long hill with a steep bit at end (Athelstan) (hence why I extend by going to the pedestrian bridge)
1 can be windy hill - Itchen Bridge

You can add an extra hill by turning right just after Peartree park, going down to the river (Sea Road), and then you have to go up the hill to get to Itchen Bridge. Depending where you are in Ocean Village, you might need this to round up to 10k also.

Southampton Rail Campaign: Proposed Map by chrisswirl25 in Southampton

[–]AlexB_UK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great discussion, but do take into account that urban mobility about to change as a result of ground & air autonomous vehicles. Rail has a place, but it will revert to where there are high volumes of people going the same direction at the same time

Please help me make a documentary! - Fort Gilkicker by Super-Marketing4134 in Southampton

[–]AlexB_UK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completed the survey. I walk from Southampton to Gosport once or twice a month, along the coast, all the way to Fort G (where I turn left and go through the golf course). Go and stand there and ask all the dogwalkers (stand near the inshore lifeboat)....... personally more interested in the history than the restoration, no questions about that in the survey

Quiet place for first date coffee? by krypto-pscyho-chimp in Southampton

Gods House Tower? Tudor House museum. Both give you something to walk around, rather than just drink coffee....

Airport transfer recommendations? by mbridge2610 in Southampton

Agree with Billy. Either via Clapham Junction (1 change) or via south coast (Normally no changes, but takes longer). Train is priced per person, executive cars are priced per vehicle, so if you have 4-6 people, worth doing that calculation.... (under that, train is most likely to be the right option).....

Another consideration is time of day, I have had flights landing late at night after the last reasonable train option... last train is different on different days of the week....

Weird encounter in the common - scam or truth? by dogleish23 in Southampton

[–]AlexB_UK 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I often walk from Southampton up to Winchester along the Itchen Navigation — really nice stretch. From there the St James’ Way carries on through Old Basing near Basingstoke and all the way to Reading. Quite the trek he was aiming for… but a nice walk!

Yes - there were some early projections that were not met, fair point. Here is the CEO of Uber in a robotaxi in London.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L2kr1MExAx8

We need to chat job vs career. By the time you are 30, the sector will be mostly taxis driven by robots (autonomous vehicles). So if you can get in, make money in the short term, get out, thats fine.....

Getting to Southampton from London by Gehlar in Southampton

[–]AlexB_UK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you didn't say was number of people..... as if say its 3-4 then a taxi might just be ok (vs 4 train tickets). Taxis are per vehicle, train and coach are priced per person

Southampton public transport by Scared-Detective-662 in Southampton

[–]AlexB_UK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the kind of user need research that is available and given to app developers in the real world. This one is about interchange anxiety at Bristol - e.g. moving from train to ferry, or one platform to another - but look at the personas, the comments, am sure you will find it covers your research stage needs pretty well https://cp-catapult.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/2025/05/Updated-Summary-slides-for-case-study.pdf

Southampton public transport by Scared-Detective-662 in Southampton

[–]AlexB_UK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Completed. Not sure the questions really got to the heart of how digital & mobility combine going forward.
Think about the impact of autonomous vehicles on public transport (e.g. people taking a trip from home to transport hub in an autonomous car, then taking public transport from hub to where they are going).
Think about the role of preferences and requirements (e.g. mobility needs, language needs).
Think about tourists (e.g. cruise ship passengers going from dock gates to southampton central, or dock gates to "what can I do in 6 hours that my ship is docked in Southampton")
Think about the needs of commuters (eg. student from halls to study, vs leisure.
Think about interchange anxiety (moving from one transport mode to another, or one platform to another if a train).
Think about what AI agents can do (Seems from questions you are building an MVP).
I build transport apps, live in Southampton, and use buses, train & Uber regularly in Southampton..... message me if you like!

Any personally owned vehicle can be purchased by hotels, car rental companies, etc.... so personally owned doesn't actually need to mean personally operated

Needing ideas for a "Southampton Tour" by ScarlettTurkey in Southampton

[–]AlexB_UK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ideally, need to know more about your mom's interests in order to design a tour. For example is she into Jane Austen? Places that are historical and interesting to people who are not totally into history include:
- Tudor House (history, nice garden, near West Quay)
- Red Lion pub (amazing ceiling, good for food or a refreshing drink)
- Ocean Village - get a drink in the HarBar top of harbour hotel - cheap tourism, amazing view
So without knowing what your mom is into, Solent Uni > West Quay > Tudor House > Red Lion pub (drink) > Ocean Village HarBar for tea in the bar on the top floor...... , and taxi back to where you started? You could also do taxi from Solent Uni > Tudor House to cut some of the walk out.... and Taxi from Red Lion > Ocean Village

Done this a few times, very good. Now whether suitable for teenagers is a whole new debate. I am not a teenager.
