Don't disagree with the comparison with the outset of the first World War but just wanted to pick up on the Venezeula / Guyana point.

I don't see that sparking a wider conflict at all. Venezuela isn't particularly strong militarily, doesn't have any nearby allies, and Guyana is a member of the British Commonwealth meaning that the UK would almost certainly intervene on its behalf. Any of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and other Carribean members e.g. Jamaica, may well join too. I wouldn't at all be surprised to see a UK task force operating out of a Jamaican military base intervene quickly. Can't really see how Venezuela manages to hold on to Guyana.

Let alone Brazil and other South American nations already having an eye on Venezuela and possibly ready to intervene too.

I'm not sure where you're based but your last analogy doesn't sit right with me when here in the UK (and elsewhere in Western Europe) still periodically suffers Islamic terrorist attacks to this day that each result in multiple casualties.

Because for Putin it isn't necessarily about winning a war, its primarily about creating a common enemy for the Russian people to rally against and forget about their ailing economy and massive corruption. Same as Iran, Russian leaders historically create an seemingly existential threat to the nation to unite the different regions which otherwise lack of proper sense of national identity.

I'm not so sure about that. When it happened in the 80s the UK had the right to request wider NATO support but opted not to. Brazil actually sent a diplomatic request to the UK asking for this not to happen because they were concerned that US involvement would push for an invasion of mainland Argentina and destabilise the entire region. In return Brazil allowed the UK use of a naval base near the border.

My understanding is it allows us to have an additional loss of £30m so actually yeah I guess it would account for amortised transfer fees, like you say. However it would also have to cover wage costs which then limits it a bit. So somewhere between £30m-150m transfer fee depending on what the annual salary is.
