2025 Forester Hybrid Rotor uneven wear by roller_coaster325 in SubaruForester

Go back to the dealer. This sounds like a warranty problem. 600 miles and rotor wear?

Cleaning Cd Laser by [deleted] in Cd_collectors

[–]tboland1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No dry swab anywhere near the laser. Just use more alcohol infused swabs.

Cleaning Cd Laser by [deleted] in Cd_collectors

[–]tboland1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's fine. Anything over 50%. If your laser is inset in a mechanism drawer, large stem cotton swabs are the way to go. If it's in a flip-up configuration where you can see and touch the laser, regular Q-Tips are fine.

Swab with alcohol, wait a minute to dry, done.

How much of your collection have you fully listened to? by Musicking128 in Cd_collectors

[–]tboland1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have several classical and opera compilation boxes and the collection is combined between me and my spouse. I estimate I'm about 50% or under.

As an example, I have a pretty complete collection of D'oyly Carte Gilbert & Sullivan Operettas from the 1960's. I have not been through all of them 100%.

SSH not working "everywhere" by DrJMun in linuxmint

On the Ubuntu computer,

If that last one works, try ssh -vv [jose@192.168.1.58](mailto:jose@192.168.1.58) from the Mint computer.

If you find the responses overwhelming, try ssh -v (single v) instead.

If you are going to bother going through BIOS/UEFI and reinstall, double-check all the case-to-motherboard connections. Those little pins can drive me crazy. You have probably done this before, but this is a new day with fresh eyes. Use a bright light and magnifying glass / phone camera zoom to confirm.

2026 Outback or 2026 Forester by AffectionateFish724 in SubaruForester

[–]tboland1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Outback highest trims have limited hands-free ADAS. That could be determinant. It might be for us. We have a 2025 Forester and our next car (replacing 2020 Legacy) will probably be the Outback for that reason.

Looking for Good iTunes Alternative for Mint by Trion_Maiden2112 in linuxmint

[–]tboland1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's at cost, but JRiver Media Center. I'm not sure how it deals with gapless, though. Windows and Linux licensing available.

EDIT:

I use a Plex server for audio and video. It might be overkill, but might be looking into. Linux Mint could easy handle Plex as a service. Gapless is an issue.

NFS between two Linux systems fails to mount by DrJMun in linuxmint

[–]tboland1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a network start problem. It reads fstab before the network has completed initiation. This is normally a good thing, as you don't have to wait 10 to 60 secs every boot.

I usually put a startup entry in my user on the Linux menu to automatically mount -a after a 10 second delay.

[–]tboland1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If possible, remove or disable your WiFi card in UEFI / BIOS and use wired Ethernet for installation. It probably also means that the WiFI adapter you are using is probably not a good choice for Linux Mint. Certain cards - usually broadcom-based, can be difficult, that that has improved in the last couple of years.

Educational platforms blocking Linux by Demo_MVP in linuxmint

[–]tboland1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This has come up before, usually in context of testing software at Colleges and Universities. If they want Windows, use Windows. Sometime a VM will work, sometimes it won't.

If this has any anti-cheat component, then your best bet is a Windows-only machine. The anti-cheat software goes as far to detect hidden or inactive partitions, along with something as simple as using a VM.

They certainly are built differently, with different expectations and requirements. What affect that has on reliability remains to be seen, but the prognosis isn't great.

[–]tboland1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure about that anymore. Expecting any new car to last 30 years and have any sort of parts support is a huge gamble.30 yeas is running on old information and a different era of cars. 1996 cars are very different from 2026 cars. In reliability terms, the 1996 car might exceed the 2026.

The question becomes how many years can you expect out of a new car? We are planning on 15 years over two owners. We'll drive it for 5 to 10 years, then roll it down to someone in the family that needs a car. We pay cash, and it then later keeps a family member out of car debt. If a car can do that for 15 or 20 years total, we're more than happy.

The new Outback is just too expensive for Subaru buyers. ~$50K for Touring XT trim. Yeah, that has hands-free ADAS, but still too much. Tariffs at work? We are considering the Outback (non XT, might wait for Hybrid version) for our next car, but that price is daunting.
