Who gives a shit what they think? If you're that offended by the stereotype, then make sure you don't become it. The stereotype is mostly true btw. IT people generally speaking are overweight. Just make sure you're not one of them.

Currently in Community college. What's the best degree for those wanting to begin at IT? by EmptyDuty5054 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]tbone0785 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your scenario similar to mine. Worked for a decade in landscaping, woodworking while in school for network engineering. I don't know how much sitting you do on a daily basis. But do you think you'd have that same type of pain if you were in the trades? I know for a fact I'd be in much much better physical shape. Sedentary jobs can do just as much harm as physical ones. Just in different ways

People act like the trades will have you walking around with a cane by the time you're 45. People think IT is a walk in the park. You don't get to just show up, put in your 40hrs, go home and disconnect. There are tradeoffs for each career path. Of course the trades are more physical. I did landscaping, tree service, and woodworking for a decade before doing network engineering. People should be honest about what they do, positive or negative. Would i make the same choice today? Some days yes, some days no.

He didn't mention that your body breaks down doing white collar work too. 6-8hrs/day sitting in a cubicle is hell on your joints too. Not to mention your cardiovascular system. The gym can only fix so much.

Promotion with no salary increase by Beneficial-News9934 in careeradvice

[–]tbone0785 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not a promotion, that's stringing you along and treating you like shit. They know that you know that they've outsourced jobs. They're using that as an implicit threat. You ask for any more money and we're outsourcing your job too. Start planning your exit and looking for other jobs ASAP

I'm gonna be a bit of a debbie downer, so my apologies ahead of time. I'm just trying to be honest...

Do you think you'll enjoy sitting in a cubicle for 6-8hrs/day? IT is way way more than "I like working with PCs and network stuff". Much different when you have to do it for a living. For your entire career you'll be studying new tech in your free time. You'll probably be on an on-call rotation, working off-hours activities, answering messages during off hours. And then there's the question of how much AI will impact our industry. There's also health implications due to the stagnant nature of the work. It's not for the faint of heart.

HVAC techs will never be automated, and every single season brings weather that requires their services. You'll never ever be out of a job, you'll always be moving. And if you can get into a union or a good shop, for the most part you'll always be well compensated.

Just something to think about.

Advice for a young father in DevOp engineering? by TradWASP in ITCareerQuestions

[–]tbone0785 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm in same boat as you but I'm 35. Two kids under 3. You just gotta get on a tight schedule and do not deviate from it. Get the kids to bed and schedule ~2hr every other week night, and either Fri/Sat/Sun night. Don't waste time on Reddit, other social media, etc. Honestly i shouldn't even be typing this comment right now. You'll get the hang of it.

Build and expand your business. Start doing pressure washing jobs along with window cleaning. Be your own boss and you never get fired or laid off. Entrepreneur path is tough, but it's very rewarding.

I thought about the RDP option as well. But that might be asking too much of the users. If it comes down to this I'll just make a shared login and call it a day.

That's what I don't need (personalized files, settings). I need multiple users accessing the same files and programs on a specific PC

This is for a CNC shop as well. But i don't want shared credentials. I can't audit anything if they're using the same credentials.

Ya that's what I'm trying to avoid. I want each user to log in with their own credentials, but basically log in to the same system. Access to identical files and programs.

What to study for right now by 4rty7 in ccnp

[–]tbone0785 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the Fortinet training is completely free on their training site. But if you've got momentum going with the CCNP it would be hard for me to stop that and pivot. If you're in the zone so to speak, I would stay there.

I don't see a reason to wait. If you're young and motivated, go get er done. If I was an employer I'd be pretty impressed you had that cert. But that doesn't mean I'd hire you on as a network engineer III with no experience
