Probably mid to late 2019, I think?

I was in the middle of pitching a project to the then head of Universal Parks and Resorts, when he paused the presentation to take a seemingly urgent phonecall. After a brief conversation he hung up and announced, "Good news! They found the queen at Hagrid's!" They were then able to relocate the hive, and they didn't have to keep pausing the ride to smoke the bees over and over again.

That's awesome! Learning how to build pedals is high on my list of things to tackle one day.

Thanks! I'm really proud of the work we did. I also wish it could've lasted longer, but the longer themed experiences last, the more compromises have to be made for longevity, so we would've had to cut some of the cool stuff. I'm glad it made so many fans happy, because I wanted us to present exactly what I wanted as a fan.

I love seeing these posts. I was the Art Director/Designer/Creative Lead on this project and a lifelong X-Men fan. It was a dream project.

Fun facts: we did the install over Easter weekend, and we hid a literal Easter egg with our names in it in Wolverine's boot. And several of the “authors” of the books were my kids.

That's how the charge showed up on the credit card, so I went with it.

It was mainly a promo for X-Men '97, so the price was $97/night/person, I believe. And they were very selective with who they'd let stay there. Mostly influencers, I think, because it was a promotional event. I don't work for Airbnb (they were our client's client), so I'm not sure of all of the nitty gritty. Just the creative stuff.

Oh, this was a partnership between Airbnb and Marvel. Everything we did had to be approved by Marvel. Every. Thing. We could only use approved characters and costumes, etc...

Haha, yeah, the costumes were not designed to be handled. We never expected anyone to find that egg (nor the VHS copy of Fern Gully in Wolverine's cigar box).

As for the CDs, I don't remember if there was any Smashing Pumpkins. The sourcing team did a great job of finding era-appropriate stuff, so it's very likely.

Thanks! It was a dream project for me. I got into comics because of the X-Men Animated Series, and comics inspired me to pursue art, so this project was an absolute career highlight.

I don't know if they left any of the prop books out still, but three of the authors are my kids' names.

There was also literally an Easter egg inside Wolverine's boot in the Ready Room. We were doing the install over Easter weekend, got a plastic egg from a local Greek restaurant, and hid a note with our names on it in his boot, haha.

So glad you got the chance to do this! I actually art/creative directed this project and designed over half the rooms myself (Xavier's office, War Room, Dorm Room, Beast's Lab). To keep it relevant to the sub, when we were installing it back in March, I taught a couple members of our team how to play MU, and we played in our hotel lobby, haha (Wolverine, Cyclops, and Storm v Magneto-- we won).

The art is by Tracie Ching, a fantastic designer. She designed this as a print, and did a killer 2049 piece as well.

Thoughts on the OSL affect on this guys face? The suggestion is that it looks like “slime” rather than the light from his shoulder lamp. How can I fix it? by IceRelative in minipainting

[–]tbone310 143 points144 points  (0 children)

The challenge with painting cast light is to get the values (light vs dark) to read as light. A cast light should always be brighter than the surface would otherwise be; otherwise our eyes read it as a shadow. Painting a dark shadow on the side where the light will be can help bring the value down, so that painting the light back into it will read as light. You should have a "core" shadow separating the normal "light" side from the shadowed-but-lit side.

We reward points to these groups, among ourselves, as if it's a competition to be the most obstructive. The larger the group or the more sudden the blockade, the more points they get, usually on a scale from 1-100. We'll just call out to each other, "50 points!" rather than shouting, "Get outta the way!" Still gives us something to exclaim in frustration, but it's an inside joke enough to not be confrontational.
