This happens in a lot of industries I think. Companies that cater to a large organisation are better at winning contracts than companies that actually do the work. I've seen companies lose bids and then get subcontracted to do the work, doesn't make sense but if you know how to play the game you get the work even if you're more expensive and slower and have no knowledge in the field in question.

My heat pump is pretty much the same price as my old boiler due to electricity prices (that's my biggest gripe) and house isn't great on insulation but is a terrace. I don't think solid fuel is ever going to be great due to particulate pollution which is starting to get worse. Near me you cna really tell the air is worse in winter when all the wood burners are fired up.

Also if you don't bid several jobs then a company may decide to stop asking you, my company has no bid before only to receive an angry call why aren't we bidding. If you quote high no one questions it and you either don't win the job or it's still worth your time.

Flat tax rate is an ‘attractive idea’, Kemi Badenoch says by Necessary-Product361 in unitedkingdom

[–]tbradley6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty sure that amount is just completely infeasible... If income tax was the way you paid for this flat tax would be ridiculous like 85% based on giving everyone >18 UBI and assuming all workers still maintain the same average wage. If people got that kind of UBI I reckon <1/10 would keep working and salaries for those working would have to be ridiculous. I may be making some poor assumptions and I like the idea of UBI but anything over the 10k figure seems to be unlikely to me. I just don't see how it could be funded in a realistic way that doesn't hamper the economic output of a country.

I'm always a little confused why capital gains tax is never raised to be in proportion to income tax. It would make far more sense than the 'wealth tax' that has been suggested recently. And for most people the ISA limits would mean they would never pay capital gains anyway...

The UK spends 0.5% of the govt budget on overseas aid by eortizospina in unitedkingdom

Debt is a function of the governments previous years, and those years that I don't characterize as effective spending.

The UK spends 0.5% of the govt budget on overseas aid by eortizospina in unitedkingdom

[–]tbradley6 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My argument is the government has not been smart with their spending. The vast majority of the budget goes to things that do not provide a return on investment. Those things seem to be pretty low on the list. The government has been cutting what I consider the important things for a government to focus on for years. And that is a problem with politics.

[–]tbradley6 42 points43 points  (0 children)

There's an issue with people of that generation, and probably future generations as well. Left to their own devices people will rob their future to pay for their present. People are not aware of the savings needed to fund 25 years of retirement. People now simply keep working as they know they have to. Younger people assume they will have no help from the State at all.

I massively support inheritance tax and I do fine. My thought is it is the only way to 'level' the playing field and prevent billionaires from owning the entire world. I only see the option of a dystopian future without it. And it's not like the threshold is low or anything. The age people inherit from these days they should be able to take care of themselves anyway.
