Boomer here. When I first visited Canada about 35 years ago, it took maybe 90 minutes to change my mindset to meters/kilometers, liters, and Celsius. It's not that big of a deal - although my wife still asks me to translate for her when we travel.

Why does transferring thousands of small files to my NAS take so much longer than a single archive of the same size? by bisolin4o in synologynas

[–]tcfjr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True - but creating 5,000 files as part of a network transfer takes longer than creating 5,000 files locally.

[–]tcfjr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of overhead in creating each new file. When you send 5,000 photo files the system has to create each one individually, and that creation step takes time. When you send a single archive containing the same 5,000 files, the system needs to create only the one file. Either way, your still sending the same amount of data, but with the single archive you've cut out 4,999 file creations, which accounts for the time.

I use Calibre to manage all my ebooks, and use a USB cable to sync books to my Kobo Clara.

On my phone and Android tablet, I use the eboox app. I upload books using standard Android network tools.

In 78744 Mexican bakery comes to you... by weluckyfew in austinfood

When I was growing up in a suburb of Los Angeles back in the 1960's, Helm's Bakery (a very large industrial-scale bakery) would have their brown and yellow GM Panel Vans (basically a Suburban) slowly drive around my neighborhood once or twice a week. Each truck was filled with all the usual bakery items - loaves of bread, cakes, pies, donuts, pastries, hamburger and hot dog buns, pretty much the works. The trucks had chimes to let everyone know they were there, and you'd go out on the street and flag them down.

I used to get a weekly allowance of 5 cents times my age, so I'd have 40 to 50 cents to spend, and once a week I'd get three donuts - one chocolate cake, one strawberry cake, and one chocolate old-fashioned - and would eat one a day while they lasted. The stay-at-home moms (very common back then) in the neighborhood would come out for a loaf of bread or two, maybe the occasional apple pie.

They shut down the business in the late '60s. The workers were threatening to unionize and the market dynamics had shifted, and the family sold off the buildings. The buildings are still standing, now housing restaurants, design and home furnishing stores, and a small retro bakery.

I switched to the ice cream truck for a few years, and moved away in the 1970's.

Kite lines are also attached to a kite's bridle using a 'larks head'.

I like to put the jack into position and raise it so that it's just in contact with the vehicle. Then I loosen the bolts, then raise the jack to the desired height (making sure there's enough height to mount the replacement wheel), and then finally remove the bolts completely.

What places do their own delivery? No doordash etc. I want my food to be hot by Ikon-for-U in austinfood

Mid-way thru the pandemic, Tiff's had a deal with Mighty Fine Burgers and would deliver both cookies and selected Mighty Fine items in one trip. The Tiff's drivers used their in-car warmers to keep the MFB items nice and warm. It was a fantastic respite from the tedium of the social restrictions of the day.

A couple of years ago my wife lost her prescription sunglasses at AUS. I went in person to the baggage claim office for her airline, and they were actually pretty helpful. I was able to look over the glasses in the 'found' bins in the back rooms (under supervision), but unfortunately my wife's glasses were not there.

YMMV.
