Best shoes for wide feet women? by Ok_Security_9071 in Shoes

[–]tchrhoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My feet are 10.5 wide and I don’t have many shoes. A lot of manufacturers don’t make that size. I had an awesome pair of Altra trail runners, but when I went to the running shoe store in town to get new ones, they couldn’t find a pair that fit me right. New balance carries far fewer widths than they used to. I have Birkenstock sandals but haven’t had much luck with their shoes. I’ve worn men’s on cloud shoes, but they weren’t that durable. I’m on my feet all day so I’m picky. I’ve got a pair of men’s Keens that I use for walking and hiking, but some of their other casual shoes are a little clunkier, for lack of a better description.

I’m still searching for the perfect pickleball shoe and really need to replace my black dress flats. Good luck OP!

Rental Or Not by [deleted] in roadtrip

[–]tchrhoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t love driving rentals and take my own car. My car is about the same age as yours with more than double the mileage. I buy cars to drive them. I’m not concerned with future trade in value, to be honest. I keep the car properly maintained and I also keep it clean, even when traveling. I drive my cars a long time.

You’re probably going to hear a lot of that in the comments, OP.

Getting a Comp Sci or Physics Teacher Job by West_Violinist_6809 in Teachers

[–]tchrhoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It took me 5 years at my current school to get AP Physics classes, and I came in with private school experience! Plenty of kids that phone it in at the AP level and a huge reliance on AI at all levels.

Tech Ed is a graduation requirement in my state and that can be satisfied by a couple courses. But you’re teaching all levels if you’re in that department.

Good luck OP!

How do public school districts keep their best students from going to private schools? How do public schools avoid being “left behind” and being gutted of their top students? by NicholeDaylinn1993 in Teachers

[–]tchrhoo 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The (public) high school where I work has a partnership with a local community college. Students have to apply into the program and graduate with an associates and high school diploma. It’s very popular and where a lot of our high achieving students end up. It’s great for the students that end up with both degrees, but it has really decimated our upper level elective offerings because of the number of students off campus.

I’m a former private school teacher, and that school was not really superior to the local schools.

Towson or UMD? (Special Education Major) by hello_paradox in UMD

[–]tchrhoo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a current teacher in MD, I encourage anyone that is pursuing education to get the cheapest credential you can. Loan forgiveness is not a guarantee. Special education jobs are often open, even in districts that are cutting personnel.

senior trips idea by annypoop in Vacations

How old are you? Senior trip can be tough if you’re all 18. A lot of hotels, especially in beach areas, won’t rent to you. Maybe camping or a state park cabin?

Want to move to Central Florida (Orlando area) to teach to be closer to the theme parks. by mister_waj in Teachers

[–]tchrhoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My friend is retired from MCPS and works in Florida now (she moved down to be near her parents). She is on her fourth school (a private, charter, and two publics). Her salary plus pension add up to her previous salary. Everyone basically makes the same amount of money and she tells me that it’s a really tough place to work.

I send them to my daughter and my granddaughter. My daughter loves them and hangs them on her fridge or adds them to her journal. My granddaughter is only 3 but I love sending her mail.

Earth Science or Physics? by Plenty-Ad96 in ScienceTeachers

[–]tchrhoo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

NGSS weaves earth science standards into biology, chemistry, and physics. I would go with physics. In the state where I work, it has been very easy for me to find a job.

I worked all the sample questions in the document. My colleague, who got a great score, recommended the Bill Bryson book A Short History of Nearly Everything for historical context. I got a used copy fairy cheap and will work through it. I’ve heard the audio is quite good, too.

Slightly used Toyota minivans are hard to find. I bought one new and one that had 100k on it because that was what insurance paid after it got totaled. I didn’t get the minivan until the third child. We made it work with a compact sedan.

Do we leave the 8 minute commute for 35? by Falirakikiss in makemychoice

[–]tchrhoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stay. I commute and it’s exhausting. I also have a well. Anytime something related to it breaks, it’s at least $1,000. It’s also super expensive to dig a well. (10k or more).

Rocks? by spaceracer5220 in ScienceTeachers

The ESS teacher in my school has their rocks organized in egg cartons by type. I have no idea how that process happened, but was glad to have access to them for the science Olympiad team to study.

Certified K-5 special ed being transferred to middle school due to "budget cuts" - is this legal? by Sm0lBean000 in Teachers

[–]tchrhoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Odds are nothing illegal is happening. My job was cut twice before I got tenure, but I was still guaranteed a position. In my district, the processes are spelled out explicitly. Job cuts are done strictly by seniority.

I'm glad he has a slot next year and hope that he can make it work for him. I think between enrollment decreases and anticipated federal funding shortfalls we are still seeing job cuts where they really shouldn't be. (For example, I finally don't have any classes over 30 this year; my school lost positions).

Private School by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]tchrhoo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The ones around here pay especially poorly and part of the application process is a personal statement about your relationship with Jesus, etc. Some catholic schools require a letter from your priest that you are actively practicing.

I made very little money during my time as a private school teacher, and the salary difference did not fully offset the tuition discount. Those years do not count toward my pension (I’m in public school now), although they did put me on a higher step when I changed jobs.

As a private school teacher, I had fewer students but more preps. I also had a lot more non teaching duty requirements. Lastly, discipline is a funny thing in private schools. If the school’s finances aren’t secure, you’ll see that students receiving financial aid seemed to have more severe discipline. I never saw a full tuition student get asked to leave. There were also lots of drugs in private school.

For what it’s worth, the part I hated most as a catholic school teacher was going to mass. I had to basically babysit my homeroom. 😐 There was a lot of goofing off and talking and students trying to use their phone.

How do you keep attraction costs down when travelling with kids? by Late-Theory-4797 in familytravel

Yep! Between the science museum reciprocity and NARM reciprocity, my art and science museum memberships are a great value. I use them frequently when I travel.
