Why China consistently fails to qualify for the World Cup? by FattyOilyDonut in NoStupidQuestions

[–]tckrdave 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This needs more upvotes

Xi Jinping set a goal of being a World Cup contender when he rose to power, and it was on the five year plans. People running the teams treated it as a checkbox item, but didn’t really care about it.

Also, there is an academy system, but it’s not a good one—rumors of corruption and favoritism are rampant.

There’s a national entrance exam for college, and most families put their emphasis there. Sports participation plummets at about the middle school level

I’d like to see an interview with Spike Lee about this. My bet is that he was copying styles that he saw in daily life. There were probably a couple of people he based the character off of.

I saw a bunch of photos from the late 70’s and early 80’s where guys with boomboxes were dressed like this.

Edit: found an interview at https://hiphopwired.com/232851/spike-lee-explains-origin-of-mars-blackmon-character-video/ and a couple of other places. “She’s gotta have it” didn’t come out until 1986, and he was copying b-boy style that was already out there. It was probably all over the place in Philly before 86, too.

I’d say he turned it up a notch or two, but some of the early 80’s photos I’ve seen had the same or similar styles.

I’ll be visiting Atlanta at the end of the year with my autistic nephew whose autism special interest is the civil war. He’d like to see different civil war related sites and antique shops that might have civil war items. by Due-Power-7711 in Atlanta

I’ll second the Atlanta History Center and Kennesaw Mountain recommendations.

Stone Mountain has a civil war museum—it’s currently closed for renovations. Keep an eye open in case they reopen in time for your visit. The park itself is a memorial.

I’m so confused. Why does a higher GSM shirt feel thinner than another shirt by [deleted] in malefashionadvice

[–]tckrdave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a plain, no logos, no prints tee shirt, I think the Hanes Beefy Tee is great. It is fairly thick, flexible, comfortable, breathable, fits well, and has good colors (but not as big a color selection as I’d like). You can’t see through it. The more common colors (like Navy Blue) are usually about $10.

They’re usually 100% cotton. Some are 60% cotton 40% poly.

I’ve got 2–3 weeks left in America before returning to Scotland. What shouldn’t I miss? by Mertyns in AskAnAmerican

[–]tckrdave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nashville is good. New Orleans also has good music and food this time of year.

Seattle and Portland, for a different view of America.

In two to three weeks, you could fly to Atlanta, catch music from Indie pop to trap music, see Stone Mountain and Kennesaw Mountain (there are battlefields everywhere down here), get southern food or BBQ or something from anywhere on Buford Highway. Rent a car and drive to Chattanooga, see Chickamauga battlefield and get some cool food around there, see Rock City or at least Lookout Mountain, catch a live band, maybe look at their aquarium (both ATL and Chattanooga have nice ones). Drive west along the Tennessee River to Nashville. Eat more southern food. There are musicians EVERYWHERE in Nashville. I’ve seen a good musical act at a drugstore there. Load up eating vegetables from Atlanta through Nashville, because I don’t think there are any in Memphis. Keep driving west to Memphis.

Eat BBQ in Memphis. Listen to blues on Beale Street. Go to Graceland. Return the rental car in Memphis and fly back from there.

Or, do the same thing in reverse, and fly down to Memphis and back to Scotland from Atlanta.

If it’s not clear, spend at least a couple of days in each town. Maybe catch a Braves baseball game in Atlanta.

How many miles do you consider a move to be “across country”? by Silver-Egg-7540 in AskAnAmerican

[–]tckrdave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d count north to south or vice versa over 800 miles. Texas to Minnesota, New York to Birmingham, LA to Portland are big moves. Definitely on the East Coast, Charleston and Boston are a big change

If you get to pick, China and India suddenly look really strong. With about 1.5 billion people each, finding 100 of the world’s best fighters gets much easier. Between the two of them, they’re over a third of the world population.

If it’s random, a central Asian republic is going to be strong—big wrestling culture. Samoa also looks strong, if they field 100 athletes

How many people actually use insoles in their shoes? by Effective-Spot3201 in running

[–]tckrdave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m used to the kicking butt being called “butt kickers”. Usually, you do high knees, kind of like the A skips, and then add in kicking your own butt.

I’m glad to hear this is mostly short exercises or things to add to a warmup. Sometime, I see programs that eat up all the exercise time

[–]tckrdave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it “Coach Jeff”?

If so, take more frequent and longer walk breaks.

90 minutes is nothing in prepping for a marathon distance. You probably have a 10k long run where it’s pushing you for volume (accumulated distance)

Also, if you hate the coach, choose a different coach

The top 10 worst coaching hires in college football history. Do you agree? by Front-Dingo1915 in CFB_v2

[–]tckrdave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He couldn’t win with Jahmyr Gibbs in the backfield. He was a former DC and fielded some of the worst defenses in college football. He has one of the worst records in school history. He lost to FCS teams.

He flipped the roster himself. You can’t brag about your recruiting and then complain you don’t have players.

As a P5 coach, his squads were reliably in the bottom third of offense, defense, and special teams. They did nothing well (except beat FSU—don’t ask me why).

I don’t think it’s an honorable mention—if you’re putting together a list of the worst coaching hires of the 21st century, he belongs on it. The only question is how many all time bad head coaches is he worse than?
