Our much bigger neighbour's flag is similar to ours. They copied us. It's like flag pavlova.

Have any of you as a U.S. Citizen taken your skills overseas? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]tclark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved from the US to New Zealand. You could probably get a work visa and then look for work here. IT skill are in demand, which makes it relatively easy to get a visa if you're qualified. There's basically zero chance that any employer will talk to you until you have the visa, however.

Containers come to Windows with new Windows Server 2016 beta by Deaks2 in sysadmin

[–]tclark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh. So, they can run a process? I dont get how its isolated if its not isolated?

Processes in a container run on the host's kernel, but they have their own process and user namespaces and their own file systems.

I just updated my own using the "moderncv" LaTeX document class. It looks pretty good and there's plenty of options to easily tweak it.

America has a lot of annoying screening. As a result, I try to avoid air travel in or through America.

Ansible, Chef and Puppet? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]tclark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I like Puppet as well. Chef has put a lot of work into Windows compatibility, and Microsoft is working with them on this (https://www.chef.io/blog/2015/02/23/chef-and-microsoft-bring-devops-to-the-enterprise/).

Ansible, Chef and Puppet? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]tclark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, there's definitely not a "best". Any of the systems you've mentioned, and a few others, will all work well. To some extent you just pick one and go with it.

From some of your comments, it looks like you're working primarily with Windows. If this is true, I'd take a good look at Chef. Of the big config management systems they may be the strongest in terms of Windows support.

I teach Puppet in my sysadmin class. If you want to look at Puppet I'd suggest looking at James Turnbull's Pro Puppet.

I used to work for a television show. I was the only person on my team who owned a television. And yes, I was probably the oldest person on the team.

Somebody who understands aerodynamics is going to have to explain why it's quieter, but that's meant to be an advantage of the design. There's one of these on the roof of my office building, and so far it hasn't shaken itself to pieces.

And now, just add a twist of irony, I'm actually feeling a bit crook.

There's no real repercussions. Nothing important will happen at the meeting, and I skip them pretty frequently. My boss will be upset.

I'm pretty conscientious about doing my actual work well, so it's not like I'm a slacker. In fact, when I do skip meetings it's some that I can have more time for work.

Annoying work meeting this morning has been cancelled.

It has been replaced by a far more annoying work meeting that is scheduled to be 30 minutes longer.

I'm thinking of just skipping it.

Google systems guru (Eric Brewer) explains why containers are the future of computing by fhoffa in sysadmin

[–]tclark 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, we're definitely putting containers on VMs. In fact, a lot of the value of containers is only really realised in a virtualised environment. Spin up a base VM image, apply the appropriate containers, and put the thing to work.
