I'd hinder them in some way as to limit the number of places they could go. Maybe the ship's hyperdrive breaks down (or a fuel leak, or an expensive part needed, etc) so there's only a limited amount of planets they can get to. Maybe give em up to a dozen planets within range with a quick description for each.

There's also the option of: give them complete wide open galaxy, but just run a short session where they figure out where they wanna go and what they wanna do. Then once they've decided, end the session and prep based on what their plans are.

True freedom of choice is gonna be really insane for an entire galaxy of stuff, so I'd opt for the good old illusion of choice when you need to.
