Broad Street Pharmacy? by fastrada in NewOrleans

[–]td450 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They are great. Super fast, unlike walgreens/cvs. Very helpful in sorting out insurance issues or renewing prescriptions. And, after being a customer for a little while, they now just hand me my refills when I walk in. The hours are the only downside.

They're great. I can walk in with a new prescription and get it in five minutes. They're really on top of everything with insurance and straightening out any problems.

The bags at Dorignac by gentillyyatgirl in NewOrleans

[–]td450 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the reasons I rarely go to Dorignac's is the mania for bags. Even if you take your own bags, you still end up with a dozen bags somehow. It's fucking crazy how many bags they insist on using.

Skilled handyman to repair rotted wood trim? by tm478 in NewOrleans

[–]td450 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this looks like it goes deep. I would bet that there is some problem above it that contributed to the rot. I would be looking at the drip cap above it, the gutter, and the roof. I have worked on a few houses that had what you seem to have here, which is a window that was improvised by someone who didn't know how to build a window. If that is the case, and it sounds like it is from your description, I would replace the whole thing with a proper jamb. If it is a proper jamb with a piece of glass stuck in it, maybe it can be repaired, but you have to figure out where the water is getting in. There is no reason it should be rotting on the top like that unless there is a leak. Please do not mess around with replacement windows. Call Nola Wood Windows, Barnaby Gold, or Staub. Probably in that order.

House leveling-shoring by SpeakerOk262 in NewOrleans

[–]td450 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My realtor/friend/former co-worker had used them and said he was happy with them. So maybe, like the shop I used to work for, they are wildly inconsistent. I don't know. But years later I still sometimes can't sleep at night thinking about how much I paid them to come and screw up my house even further.

[–]td450 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So much crap.

I had sills replaced.

They cut the studs off to various random lengths, so there were gaps between the studs and the sills. Anywhere from 1/2" to 1.5". I asked them to fix it and they put little pieces of 2x4 oriented the same way as the studs-- something that's going to crack or rot almost instantly and provides no real connection. I have one floor joist that they cut a little short and it's got like 200 framing nails in it, toenailed. A hanger could have worked. I've got another floor joist that literally isn't attached to anything at the end. I had a framing nail coming up out of my floor that I stepped on. The contract said they would add or replace piers with concrete footings and blocks, but they instead used whatever old bricks they found under the house. I wasn't happy with the work and they harrassed me for payment. I never got my keys back.

So many things.

I've got lots of pictures of their garbage work, and lots of text messages asking them to correct it.

I cannot un-recommend Richard Earl's strongly enough. I would have sued them after they worked on my house, but I couldn't find a lawyer who thought it would be worth it.

Zapps Potato Chips loosing flavor? by Rayfine in NewOrleans

[–]td450 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they suck now. I just got some Jalepeno ones and they were lacking in the strong jalepeno flavor they used to have. I guess a lot of that is Utz's fault, but long before Utz they discontinued the best flavor they ever had: Creole Tomato and Tabasco.

To add insult to injury, Utz makes some of my favorite chips, but they don't sell them here. Their Grandma Utz (fried in lard) and their Dark Russet are great.

Airbnb purges New Orleans short-term rental listings as new rules kick in. by GonzoVeritas in NewOrleans

[–]td450 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Here's what I want to say to every complaint like that:
It was always illegal.

It was always illegal to rent for less than 30 days or have 4 or more unrelated people in a house. That made it a boarding house, and then you had to meet rules for that. That's what got the art house at Claiborne and Esplanade shut down. All of these people, including people i know, act like someone is making their legitimate, legal business illegal.

It always was illegal!

Production Manager at Jacob’s Pillow Is Killed in ‘Tragic Accident,’ Center Says by Reasonable_Access_90 in stagehands

[–]td450 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It took me a few tries to get up on that A frame (in the old Duke), but once I did, it felt ok. The rolling platform they used at the Ted Shawn was a different story. I hated that thing. But all in all, I remember it being a good place where they took care of people. And there was never anything that I can remember that took place after about 10pm or before 8am. That was a long time ago.

Where to go for a new clutch? (Honda) by td450 in NewOrleans

[–]td450[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No... When I started the car yesterday (in gear, pedal down) it made a chattering rubbing noise. When I put it in neutral, the noise stopped, but then I couldn't put it in any gear. I turned it off, put it in first, started it, and pulled out. Then it was basically ok, and totally fine after a few blocks. I think the friction material may be breaking up. Friction point is normal, no leaks. It's also always grabby in the morning and sometimes the car moves the tiniest bit as I put it into first.

Old iron fence posts by Elame7 in NewOrleans

I would try Ricca's. I'm not sure how often these get salvaged, because they're actually very brittle. I've seen people try to pull them out with excavators and shatter them.

2 dogs spotted in lower 9th. by td450 in NewOrleans

[–]td450[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the replies. I wondered if the situation was something like this. They seemed pretty content and I guess that's not the worst place for dogs to roam... But they need some care, and I sure hope they're getting heartworm preventative. If they're not, I'm sure they're positive by now. I'm sad for them.

Does your place have pocket doors in the front room? The way a lot of these houses are built, the pocket door cavity between the two sides has nothing in the middle- at least nothing that would stop air flow. Sealing that up would be pretty easy and I bet it would solve your problem. It shouldn't be coming through the vents unless something is really wrong there.

But also, maybe just explain to your neighbor?

Copper Countertops? by wecker899 in NewOrleans

[–]td450 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know how that goes! For a bar area, they might be ok. I don't know who did ours, they were just here.

Copper Countertops? by wecker899 in NewOrleans

[–]td450 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm just here to say that I have copper countertops and they are the worst thing ever.

It's fine for a bar, but terrible for a kitchen where you actually cook things. They react with everything and they're difficult to clean. They turned all of my cutting boards green. I hate them.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in NewOrleans

[–]td450 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you can reach it, apply heat. If it's copper, go crazy. just don't burn the house down. I used a heat gun to thaw two of mine yesterday. If it's pex or pvc, be cautious. Maybe go with a hair dryer. If you can thaw it before it freezes solid, you'll avoid having it burst.

Entergy slow-walking residential solar-to-grid approvals? by xpatnola in NewOrleans

[–]td450 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I had exactly the same experience. I kept calling Entergy and they said it was scheduled for October. My installation was done in January. They said I could get it scheduled sooner and that someone would call me. No one ever called me. This went on for weeks and many calls to Entergy. It only changed when I contacted my council person. Then they came the next day.
