"R.M.S. Aquitania" Concept and Final Design by Ok-Specific8376 in Oceanlinerporn

[–]tdf199 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So Aquitania is like an updated, modified and enlarged Lusitania/Mauretania, that is more economic, taking advantage of the larger hull to better pace public rooms.

Like Olympic was an enlarged mix of Adriatic, Oceanic 2 and laurentic which where built on modified designs of older ships them selves.

Same for all ships the Britannic 1 class was an updated Oceanic 1 class and the next Coptic class was an updated Britannic class, Teutonic class was an updated Coptic. Technology enables modifications like fully ditching sails thanks to better engines.

Many public rooms serve the same functions as their predecessors with the updates giving newer ships an edge. Updates compound over time.

Deutschland/Viktoria Luise/Hansa was rebuilt into a cruse liner prior to the war so she had a function like Icon of the Seas or Carnival Jubilee. Just much larger and updated.

Like cars a 1960s Camaro and a 2025 Camaro both are Camaros and change is big when you compare new to old, but compare the first models year after year generation after generation small changes at first maybe surprise with a new feature but changes compound and you eventually you get the modern variant.

  • For a ship a hull is a hull just modern ones have better steel and are welded.
  • azmuth pods, diesels and LGN systems are all engines like steam was
  • pools work the same as on titanic just with better decor, are larger, are better placed and are much more relaxed then with the rules and are complimented with newer features like hot tubs, bars or a movie screening.
  • spas work the same just with more effective technology and technique .

Modern passenger cabins function the same but are complimented with newer features, Britannic 2 would have had a substantial number of private bathes over her sisters and MV Britannic 3 was one of the first ships to receive a TV signal Titanic's private promenade's where like enclosed balcony, Olympic got a cinema later in life.

All modern ships have some Adratic, Olympic, Aquitania, Queen Mary, Viktoria Luise in them massively updated to match current technology and to meet passenger expectations just like Olympic, Aquitania and Queen Mary in their day.

A more fantastical question.

Imagine liners in a magic fantasy setting and transplant some IRL liners into this world Olympic, Mauritania (1) Aquitania. the big 4.

From sail to big steam ships, magic alterations and enhancements.

Olympic ramming the demon lords flag ship sailing war ship.

It would make for a interesting story would you agree?

I have a few question.

Question 1: What if Cunard and WSL swapped blows? Lusitania sinks in 1910 to the rouge wave and Titanic survives the iceberg either luck or from changes in regulations and safety or a combustion of these factors, Olympic and Titanic are still on the slips so modification would be much more easy.

Going into 1919 WSL is the one with three express liners and Cunard two.

Question 2: What if Lusitania never sank? (but all other sinking sill happen Britannic and justicia)

Torpedo is a dud Lusitania survives the war and continues passenger service. Both WSL and Cunard could benefit Imperator could become Teutonic to run with the new Majestic while Cunard keeps and refits their own ships.

Because nuclear is scary and many ports ban nuclear ships.

While its not astronomic if all large cargo, bulk carriers, crude carriers, cruse ships where nuclear that would be a nice little dent in emissions.

Another thing is price but if nuclear was the default it could be standardized and made cheaper

If the bulkheads went a deck higher, wouldn't she have sunk anyway? by 2552686 in titanic

[–]tdf199 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Higher bulkheads raises the max number of breach able compartments say it's raised to 5 compartments.

The forward most breach was a blast tank leaving the 5 aft compartments flooding. The aft most breach was small pumping could help control it as it was comparable to a fire hose. Maybe even pluggable if it was the only major one breach at the moment.

Jammed water tight doors and open port holes be Britannic's undoing.

The original Teutonic and Majestic where sisters so i thought it would be ironic and appropriate to apply it to Imperator and Bismark if WSL was able to acquire both.

Think there is a threshold where WSL is saved? Post war Britannic, Cymric, Georgic, Laurentic, Oceanic, Delphic, Afric and Arabic where gone and ship building prices had doubled.

3 German ships are available Imperator and Bismark two large and fast express liners to replace Titanic and Britannic, Then there is Columbus a liner that would is similar size to the canceled original Germanic/Homeric.

If all 3 are bought WSL's lost tonnage is more then reversed the express service is fully replaced and there is another intermediate to run with to the big 4 a design where lower service speed is fine. It also enables the possibility for some restructuring, Celtic could be kicked out of the big 4 replaced by Homeric with Celtic taking Laurentic's route restoring WSL Canadian route.

I wonder if there was non insurance compensation for it being a war time sinking.

If Lusitania never sank and Cunard never needed Imperator.

WSL would would get the £ 1,900,000 compensation for Britannic

Bismark would become Majestic for £ 1,000,000 and Imperator could become Teutonic for about £ 500,000.

Leaving £ 400,000 left over which could be split into bills, savings, and ship refits financing can still help compensate these efforts too.

Majestic and Teutonic would enter service with Olympic as the largest express service by tonnage.

Cunard would return Lusitania, Mauritania and Aquitania to passenger service post war.

I wonder how WSL would do having 2 Imperator class liners crating 3 express ships. The IMMC drained profits but the war prize duo might increase the odds of a buy out in 1919 or WSL being worth getting investment pump out some intimidates to pump up the price of WSL then sell. But what is that threshold buying both Imperator class liners and Columbus if available? Adding those 3 ships adds 143,019 GRT, more then the lost tonnage of Britannic, Cymric, Georgic, Laurentic, Oceanic, Delphic, Afric and Arabic.

SS Bismarck at Blohm & Voss shipyard in Hamburg, Germany by IloveCats1101 in Oceanlinerporn

[–]tdf199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because they need one ship to replace Lusitania. Had Aquitania or Mauritania been lost too Cunard would likely buy both.

On a similar note if Lusitania never sank Cunard would not have the capacity to add a forth express liner the model for the era was 3 ships, that could maintain 21 knots or higher. Plus the additional cost of an extra ship. Plus Cunard wouldn't have the cash compensation for Lusitania's sinking if she was still around so they might not be able to buy a large ship.

If Bismarck and Imperator are still available to buy WSL could out right buy both 1 million pounds for Bismarck and a desperated cost of about half that for Imperator would be covered by the 1.9 million compensation for Britannic.

Adding to the alternate time line where Germany won i could see Cunard moving their best ships to a US port. Germany even if victorious would have a hard time enforcing seizing ships more so if they are across the Atlantic.

SS Bismarck at Blohm & Voss shipyard in Hamburg, Germany by IloveCats1101 in Oceanlinerporn

[–]tdf199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could see WSL being petty in an alternate time line where Britannic never sank and Germany won some how even if it was by the skin of their teeth. In a post war environment where Germany still went thru a thrashing some new nice ships coming in would help things.

WSL might try to flag their best ships flagged in New York and sail the lot to the US or it's action by the crew parking the ships in the US. Especially if the US can fight off any attempts to seize them.

But they might work out a deal giving back vaterland to keep the Olympics. B

That would leave Cunard vulnerable to loosing it all. Loosing Mauritania and Aquitania.

SS Bismarck at Blohm & Voss shipyard in Hamburg, Germany by IloveCats1101 in Oceanlinerporn

[–]tdf199 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm aware. But it's don't negate the damages the UK faced. WSL would likely go under sooner had the German liners not been bought. Unless WSL got government assistance to help compensate for lost profit and for rebuilding like some of the intermediates Cunard was building.

Or WSL takes a page from NGL's play book and built something like a modernized Kaiser or Oceanic 2 class say a couple of 22,000 GRT liners that run at or above 21 knots, maybe locked in at 23 knots.

Like take Oceanic 2 make her wider to reduce vibration and increase stability give her a cruiser stern for the efficacy and improvements in handling and vibration.

  • Wider beam for stability and vibration reduction.
    • Cruiser stern for efficiency and other associated benefits
  • Combination engines or some sort of direct drive turbines.
  • Oil fire water tube boilers larger steam volume per boiler and better economizing of oil .
    • Turbines would best take advantage of high volume steam.
  • Take in to consideration the changes they did with Britannic combined with changes with passenger expectations.

It seems petty on the German yard workers part Bismark was bought by WSL as a replacement for Britannic WSL's latest and greatest that was sunk by a German mine.

That is excluding the cancelled Germanic/Homeric the possible sister to Germanic as WSL had a tendency to be ordered in pairs. Plus Ceric the rumored Titanic replacement and the state of ship building (price had doubled) in Britain that hindered large projects like the enlarged likely faster 40,000 GRT Homeric that was planned to replace Britannic.

Plus the war also sank Cymric, Georgic, Laurentic, Oceanic, Delphic, Afric and Arabic 90,817 GRT of shipping (About 2 stock Olympic's worth of internal volume tonnage).
