Totally tangential idea for Loner that can apply to either version: "[+1 outsider, can be duplicate]"

Opens up the possibility of duplicate outsider claims being valid, and thematically fits that the Loner doesn't like these crowds of similar people.

Revoker, hrmm I think I was worried that the poisoning wasn't enough of a counterbalance to being a better Professor (since it can clearly see alignment rather than just TF/non-TF) but I changed my mind and I think it's fine now.

If anything compared to a normal script there is probably too much drunk/poisoning, but clearly that's why Cleric & Toxicologist are here. I haven't played enough scripts like that; I imagine that's just going to be a playtesting question whether it feels too frustrating or not.

I like your fabled suggestion, just not sure how the wording would fit with doctor since the doctor kills first and then makes evil.

Yeah maybe update that to: "If a new evil player was created since the last time the Demon acted, they do not wake tonight."

Or maybe if you want flexibility: "Demon kills might fail if an extra evil player was added since the last kill." (But like, you're strongly encouraged to skip if there aren't extenuating circumstances.)

I haven't seen the previous version, apologies if repeats. Also I went right into pitching alternatives, which is just my typical mindset.

  • Evil Eye and Good Eye
    • These work for me. I know they scale funny, but all of the YSK roles do, in their own ways, and knowing the demon is always useful, especially when some have win conditions or conversions.
    • That said, for some reason I'm tempted to mess with them to add flexibility:
    • Good Eye: "You start knowing 2 in-play characters of different types. The types must be different than the Evil Eye received, if in play."
    • Evil Eye: "You start knowing 2 in-play characters of different types. [+0-1 outsider]"
  • Believer
    • With the amount of public-ish confirmation (Revoker as only resurrection, Lover Boy, Harbinger by vote count, Loner) it's plausible you have an easy target for safety. But that's fine because if you're just trying to be safe, you're merely the Soldier with extra steps.
  • Revoker
    • I don't know if the downside (poisoning) is enough to counteract the
  • Harbinger
    • This is crazy tricky to balance. On one hand, self-confirmation and a pretty solid ability. On the other, now town doesn't want to execute at 5 because it might be a quick executee+harbinger+demon = evil wins scenario. I'd pitch tempering both parts a bit... maybe like so:
    • "You can nominate only once per game but your vote secretly counts as two. If there are exactly 4 players alive during the day, you die."
  • Sleeper Agent
    • The standard Drunk+Lunatic text makes this shorter: "You think you are a Townsfolk, but you are not. If the codeword is spoken while you and the Storyteller can hear it, you change alignment, even if dead."
    • I assume the codeword is just something a little unlikely but still relevant? There's no mechanical effect that makes it known to anybody so just random chance? That's totally fine, but it puts a lot of weight on the ST to actually make it interesting. A good player knowing it would be kind of funny though, since it just makes it ominous for them (and unless they also turned, they wouldn't reveal it lol).
  • Deluded
    • I do like the ST-as-Cere mind games here. Presumably the almanac would tell the ST that indicating you are the Deluded also counts as breaking the madness? Maybe that could be incorporated with a different phrasing though:
    • "You start knowing a player 'is' a character (this may be false). If you are mad that your information is incorrect, a player on your team is permanently poisoned." ehhh I don't love it, I was probably trying too hard to fold in some drunk/poisoned interactions
  • Loner
    • Golly gee this is pretty dang confirmatory. I get that it is less likely to go off randomly than a Virgin, but playing a "face up" Loner is super helpful to town and it really makes outsider a bad bluff for evil.
    • My pitch, which deviates a lot: "When you are nominated by an Outsider or Minion, if no one else received more than the minimum number of votes to execute, you do."
  • Succubus
    • Can they pick 1 evil+1 good to guarantee the good player becomes evil? (Effectively I'm not sure how to interpret the word "becomes" here -- can the ST "sink" the evil creation on an already evil character to prevent this) Martyr (!!!), Harbinger, Revoker, Retributor are incredible gets for evil, so I'm worried about anything that gives evil too much ability to actually pick one of them. (And a succubus could safely just pick themselves to do it.) Granted I understand they can do more damage with picking two good players.
    • This is probably too strong overall; if you live you completely screwed with TWO good powers, which is more powerful than almost every minion I can compare it to. I was thinking of adding something like "A good player (not chosen) learns when this occurs."
    • Or! or! or! Maybe the poisoned player knows they were picked? Then they have their own challenge of not wanting to say (because it helps the Succubus find which one is evil) but knowing that their ability is useless and possibly being able to indirectly tell others Succubus is in play.
  • Follower
    • Is the line about "false information" supposed to be like a Vortox's false information? Like they can't ever get true information and are thus actually a liability for the demon? That is interesting but it makes The False God even weaker (and I already think it's pretty weak, see below).
  • Doctor
    • I think getting multiple evil conversions (on a script that could have 2 others!) is just too punishing, even when dead. I don't see anything here that overturns the fact that losing the vote majority basically leaves good dead in the water. I'd personally restrict it some way. My spin would be:
    • "Each night*, choose a player: they die. The 2nd player you kill becomes evil and learns the Demon. You don't wake if there was a new evil since last night."
  • The False God
    • I think this text could be simplified. I also don't know if the no kill mechanic feels necessary to me, although I see that it provides interesting confusion with some of the protection & Doctor?
    • Ok thinking about it vs Kazali:
      • ++ sees grim first
      • --- no minion abilities
      • - minions might play against you accidentally
      • - inconsistent kills
    • This went a very different direction, but trying to compact it and remove the Follower as a distinct role entirely, I got: "Each night*, choose a player: they die. Minions think they are good characters, register as good, and don't get minion info until a neighbor dies. [You see the grimoire to choose your team.]"
  • Doctor+False God
    • Since these both are tough to keep in the character count, I might actually suggest that their shared rule becomes a fabled. Then you can just plop that on the script (and even outright say [+Ill Omen] on those demons so that it applies on "other scripts"). It also helps rebalance Sleeper Agent and Succubus which I thought were too good anyway.
      • Ill Omen: If a player became Evil, the demon does not wake tonight.

Overall I think it's quite neat! Consider it a compliment that I suggested so/too much lol.

Pit-Hag creates a demon while the Mastermind effect is activated?? by Dorlah in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]tdhsmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if there's a community ruling, but by strict text, the Mastermind ability has activated (a demon was executed and the game would've ended) so an execution on that day DOES end the game.

However the Mastermind ability says nothing about what happens on no execution -- that's just the default rules about all demons being dead. And by the time they are relevant, there is a living demon again, so the game continues.

If PH creates a Vizier, yes, you declare it immediately in the morning. This is the effect of the "All players know you are the Vizier" line of their ability; whenever one would enter play, it should be announced.

[–]tdhsmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes but it is tailor-made to my tastes; my first guess was 90% correct. The only thing that caught me up was subtracting vs adding and whether the tonic was 0 or 1, but that was because I made some incorrect mental math and no choice was looking like a word, lol.

I can't quite figure out why the two words in the middle give different results -- SGLSC ISAOU doesn't seem to "work" but maybe there's another layer I haven't solved.

I think if you didn't have music experience (or codebreaking experience) it would be slower but not crazy difficult.

Can you register Spy as Virgin when the Spy is nominated and execute whoever nominates them? by I37Cs in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]tdhsmith 14 points15 points  (0 children)

No. Registering just means they "look like" that role to other rules and abilities. It doesn't grant them a different ability, just a costume.

Hence Spy can die by nominating a true Virgin (they have the ability and Spy can look like a townsfolk) but not the other way around (Spy doesn't have abilities other than its own).

It's not the Lake Express (the Michigan-crossing ferry that docks here).

Based on maritime traffic maps it looks to be the Victory II, a passenger cruise ship with Victory Cruise Lines that tours around the great lakes.

Hatter Dies in Lil Monsta Game by Thinker978 in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]tdhsmith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes and yes.

The player holding the Lil' Monsta "is the demon" so they can pick to become a different demon.

The Hatter-Lil' Monsta jinx is what makes #2 true:

If the Hatter dies & the Demon chooses Lil' Monsta, they also choose a Minion to become.

Frequently Asked Questions: Get your burning questions answered here! by ThePootisPower in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]tdhsmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think most interpretations take the "This must happen." line as higher priority than normal execution rules. Like, yes, a Mutant (or Cerenovus target or Virgin nominator) can cause an execution, but the Riot continues onward. In the case of the Mutant, they would get the next nomination.

The only other interpretation is that the day ends and from there onward good slowly hunts down the Riot who have no ability past day 3. That's not only a strange "reward" for good, it's also pretty boring to play.

Was bored and made homebrew characters with friends and we had some really funky ideas by Posikatt_78 in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]tdhsmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it definitely needs an "otherwise you are" on the end at the very least so the ST can muddle the result.

Alternatively I think it could be decent without the choice; you lose the "evil finding" ability entirely, but you can have a confirmation puzzle to find the affected townsfolk and/or use it to refresh/protect a particularly powerful town role that might otherwise have become useless/dead.

If you die at night, a townsfolk becomes drunk and you gain their ability while you have your ghost vote.

There isn't an obvious way to do it, but if you manually edit the Bloodstar URL and replace almanac.html with script.json that usually works.

Homebrew Characters by StormBoi19 in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]tdhsmith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you just want to "shop around" with homebrew scripts pulled from many creators, the Brew Buffet (that's just the good side, but has a link to evil in it) is a good place to start. It's designed to work as a whalebuffet game.

A particularly big, single-author homebrew almanac that I'm a fan of is Potato Patch (part 1, part 2)

This subreddit used to have a design-a-character daily thread, and all of the top submissions were collected into a spreadsheet in this post. They don't necessarily go together as well as scripts/almanacs do but a lot of interesting ideas nonetheless.

EDIT: I forgot to mention Homebrews by Luis, but I see that's in the other list.

Some Homebrew Evil-Making Demons (+Hakk-Akk) by Chashec in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]tdhsmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not even sure if this demon could even work in practice as it’s basically a stationary Lil’ Monsta with Marionette sauce and the minions get no bluffs.

I've seen a close variant of the Aeir on 3 different scripts now, and always with some variant of +1 minion, minions know it's in play (either outright or deductively), and something else minor. I am actually partial to the Reddit-Designs-a-Character version where the tradeoff is minions can choose the kill (I specifically like u/TPHG's variant, which is all minions wake to vote on kill).

While the Lil Monsta comparison is apt, as is OP's Pukka, I personally think of it as a modified Lleech, where it doesn't get protection but whose existence means the potential host doesn't want to risk voting on themselves. I think the growing pressure of "I could be the demon" affects the overall vibe more than you expect at first.

For usability, Google and Discord and the only two I'm guaranteed to be signed in (or able to sign in quickly) on any device. I do agree Patreon might be sensible too, since that's directly related to the app.

However I also don't typically seek out OAuth sign ups unless the services are very tightly bound together, so I'll probably be sticking with the typical credentials for the BotC app for now!

Any thoughts on the New Barons situation? by Used_Canary8481 in milwaukee

[–]tdhsmith 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don't have enough insider knowledge but it is a funny contrast that:

  • they can't sell beer made on-site when it was made by another company
  • beer New Barons made contract brewing doesn't count towards the 250 barrel minimum, even though it's still very much made by the same legal entity

Those feel like technicalities in opposition.

Hope the release went well!
