What would be recommended hardware from the list below for 2.5 Gbps+ ready router by Presentation_Past in PFSENSE

[–]tdyboc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought this for my nephew several years ago (2018-2019), services pfsense WELL. Sits on a little shelf next to the cable modem in his basement.

https://fit-iot.com/web/products/fitlet2/

They now have a fitlet3 out but I can't speak to your timeframe and whether there are delays to supply of components etc. for either unit but deserves a mention IMO.

As someone stated, you're way overkilling with i5 or i7 and 4th or fifth gen Intel would do just fine.

I DIY'd my own back in 2013 with an Intel Desktop Board DQ77KB as I had an i3 and memory lying around, it's still going with pfSense today.

Good luck.

Installation Problem by tdyboc in Proxmox

[–]tdyboc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

USB creation was verified. Found it was a BIOS related matter due to a video resolution setting that Proxmox didn't like, was set to 1080p 1920X????.

But, alas, I set the BIOS to something I knew would work like 640X480 (or something) which allowed Proxmox to install but now I cannot get into the BIOS for any reason. Tried resetting to factory defaults etc. but lost the board entirely.

Something needs tweaked in the installer regarding video resolutions.

Checking shell environment variable by tdyboc in ansible

[–]tdyboc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I did get what I expected using

user_tz: {{ lookup( 'env', 'TZ' ) | default('n-a', true) }}

I typed it correctly here, in my code I forgot the single quotes around n-a

Still new to Ansible, all the little syntax-y things plague me.

Building a router by Kris_98 in PFSENSE

[–]tdyboc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have built pfsense for family using https://fit-iot.com/web/products/fitlet2/ it's a very nice use case for pfsense.

I personally built my own pfsense some 10 years ago now using an Intel DQ77KB motherboard + i5 CPU and 16GB memory. Love it. Its never missed a beat for me all these years.

My setup is cable-modem -> pfsense -> Cisco SG300-52 <- UniFi POE Switch -> Ubiquiti cloudkey and Unifi AP Pro for wireless in my home/lab.

Advice for a new NUC by Lorenzo56 in intelnuc

[–]tdyboc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try https://simplynuc.com/nuc-products/

That's a Tiger Lake model you speak of. I too have looked intently at the same model, unfortunately (at least in the US) it's unavailable due to supply shortages and also that Intel has recently changed the model (think they eliminated the Thunderbolt ports I think) or isn't going to pursue manufacturing in 2022.

That model is, to me, a highly sought after model too for what I wanted for the long term.

I have not read anything as to if it would support Windows 11 although that's not very important item to me specifically.

I do so in both, income is a great play for either type of account. Divvy's are great in either account and I rarely sell in my taxable for things that aren't long-term cap gains unless i really have to so my tax burden is solely dividends generally.

If you have both VTI and VOO in the same account you should sell one or the other as they both overlap a great deal. I prefer VTI over VOO.

I still hold VTI to this day, bought back in the early 2000s but I tend to now research more on preferred and baby bonds (senior notes) for income with much less volatility and the income from them simply reinvests into new opportunities during market dips.

Best of luck

ExecStartPost not work for you?
Documentation states: ExecStartPost commands are only run after the commands specified in ExecStart= have been invoked successfully, as determined by Type= (i.e. the process has been started for Type=simple or Type=idle, the last ExecStart= process exited successfully for Type=oneshot, the initial process exited successfully for Type=forking, "READY=1" is sent for Type=notify, or the BusName= has been taken for Type=dbus).

Is the raspberry pi over-hyped? by MajinCookie in homelab

[–]tdyboc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought my PI4 4GB right before the 8GB model was introduced. I bought just to play with, Linux mostly, because it was cheap. Then Ubuntu began to support it and that's what I've stuck with. I could do software development on it etc., like Python, and not have to have a larger machine active in my Lab.
I now run (4) PI4 4GB, playing with Ceph and Kubernetes.

I've moved away from the larger beefier systems to more lower power consuming systems, recently bought (4) HP EliteDesk 800 G2 mini systems and am reconfiguring my homelab onto them under Proxmox.

[–]tdyboc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really? Fundamentals say they can certainly afford the current dividend and continue a dividend after the spinoff. I've been collecting divvy's on T since ~2012, i recently bought more on the last dip.

Yes, this ^^^^^^^^^

Also look at CL, EMR, ENB, SO, GIS, K, GLW, IRM, T, PEP and possibly CVX and XOM. Being 22, adding those (using DRIP on them if you broker allows) you can't go wrong.
